Chapter 9 No Longer Important

Author: Nameless
Rosalind said nothing, but a smile appeared on her lips moments later.

That night, Yvonne sat on the couch reading. There was half a bag of potato chips spread beside her.

Rosalind came out of the study with a document in hand. It had a blank cover and was printed on standard letter-size paper.

She walked over to the coffee table and set it down in front of Yvonne.

Yvonne looked up.

She glanced at Rosalind in confusion before flipping to the first page.

There was half a bag of potato chips spread beside her.Rosalind came out of the study with a document in hand. It had a blank cover and was printed on standard letter-size paper. She walked over to the coffee table and set it down in front of Yvonne.Yvonne looked up.She glanced at Rosalind in confusion before flipping to the first page.I happened to be heading downstairs for a glass of water. So, I caught a glimpse of the file as I passed the couch. The title was printed in bold."Yvonne Young's Interim Compensation Agreement for Wasting Julian Shaw's Valuable Time.""Clause One: Rank in the top 30 on the final exams.""Clause Two: Don't make Julian mad.""Clause Three: No more calling him Mr. Shaw.""Clause Four: Follow all school rules. No being late, no leaving school early, and no climbing the fence to sneak out for a drink.""Clause Five: Maintain an

  • The Daughter at the Door   Chapter 8 What She Had Been Waiting For

Yvonne had been wearing the same school uniform for two days. It was wrinkled beyond recognition at this point, the collar bunched up at the back of her neck. When my eyes fell on her figure, I could see her shoulder blades shifting faintly beneath the fabric.Rosalind spoke. "Your father asked me to take care of you before he did. I didn't do a good job. I'm sorry."Yvonne didn't turn around. Her shoulders rose and fell sharply for a moment before settling again."And one more thing." Rosalind looked at the gravestone as she continued, "The money you've been receiving all these years didn't come from me. Your father set up a trust with a financial firm before he died, and they've been transferring the money to you on the 15th of every month."He said it was something he should do as your father. It wasn't from the Young family."Yvonne didn't move. She crouched there like a tree that had been bent by the wind for far too long. After a long while, she finally called out in a hoar

  • The Daughter at the Door   Chapter 7 An Unsettled Debt

Yvonne stood where she was, gritting her teeth as she spat, "I don't believe you. You must be lying to me."Rosalind pursed her lips and said nothing.I sighed and walked over to the storage cabinet. The bottom drawer slid open, revealing the old photo album inside.I took it out and set it on the edge of the coffee table.Yvonne looked down at the album, her voice trembling. "This belonged to my dad."She reached for it. Her fingertips touched the cover before freezing. She was looking at a faded Polaroid. A man stood outside an old apartment building, his face in profile as he held a baby in his arms. Her fingers traced the edge of the photograph. She kept turning the pages. There was a sheet of paper tucked inside the last page.I leaned over for a look. It was a final letter Yvonne's father had left for her before he died. She stared at it for a long time. When she finally looked up, her eyes were red.Rosalind was startled by her tears."My dad said you were the only

  • The Daughter at the Door   Chapter 6 The Truth About the Money

Caleb lightly held the rim of his wineglass, his tone unhurried. "Yvonne is family, but she's been raised outside of it for years. It's about time she was brought back."I looked up.His smile was warm, but something about it made me deeply uncomfortable.Every set of eyes at the table turned our way the moment he brought it up. Some people lowered their heads and sipped their wine. Others exchanged knowing glances.Word that Vivian, who had died young, had left behind an illegitimate daughter spread through the room like a plague.Rosalind set down her utensils and was about to speak when I put down my napkin and chuckled softly. "Caleb, word certainly gets to you fast. Yvonne is still a kid, so her education comes first. There's no need to rush into bringing her back into the fold."His smile faltered.I met his eyes. "As for you, Caleb, you've gone out of your way to look after Yvonne all these years. We haven't forgotten that."He stared at me. The smile remained, but I saw

  • The Daughter at the Door   Chapter 5 A Little Bit of Sugar

I turned and headed into the kitchen.A plate of cookies sat on the coffee table in front of Yvonne 20 minutes later. They'd just come out of the oven, so they were still warm as they filled the room with the rich smell of butter. She looked down at the cookies before looking up to stare at me, utterly lost. "Mr. Shaw, you…"She didn't finish.I looked out the window and picked up my coffee. "Try one. I didn't put much sugar in them."She picked one up and took a bite. Then, she lowered her head and took another. She didn't say anything. Her eyes suddenly reddened. She hastily turned her face away, pretending to look at the maple tree outside.I set my cup down. "Yvonne."She hummed in response, her voice somewhat nasal."If you want something to eat, just say so."She didn't answer. Instead, she simply picked up another cookie and slowly finished it.I found her curled up in the corner of the couch that afternoon; her backpack had somehow slipped onto the floor.I went ups

  • The Daughter at the Door   Chapter 4 The Truth About Yvonne

"I'm not Rosalind's daughter. You don't have to divorce her. You'll at least be able to live comfortably if you stay married into the Young family. "My dad was the same way. He stubbornly refused to go back to the Young family. Then, he couldn't even afford treatment when he fell ill. I don't like Rosalind, but I don't want to hurt you."I gripped the piece of paper tightly and stood there for a long time.I pushed the door open. Sure enough, Yvonne was still standing in the hallway."Your dad…""He thought that he could raise me on his own if he didn't ask for recognition, didn't want her money, and stayed out of her marriage. Then, he got sick and couldn't afford treatment. He told me he didn't blame anyone."When Rosalind came home, I stopped her. "Rosalind."She stopped."About Yvonne's father…"There wasn't a moon in the sky.She stood in the strip of light spilling through the half-open door, her features blurred in the shadows."What exactly happened?""Yvonne is Vi
