Chapter 2 While He Flaunted His Love, I Let Go

Author: Clara Rainford
The next morning, the first thing I saw when I checked my phone was a post that had already blown up.

"Love knows no distance. If two hearts want each other, nothing can stand in the way."

Attached was a photo of Shawn and Madison, smiling at the camera like they were the leads in some teen romance. He was holding a Blackridge University admission packet in the picture, while she showed off her acceptance letter to a junior college.

I hadn't agreed to take him with me.

So, where did his acceptance packet come from?

The comments underneath were full of gushing reactions from our mutual friends.

"Oh, my God! The couple I've been rooting for has finally made things official. I'm screaming!"

"This is seriously so romantic. Blackridge and junior college may be worlds apart, but love conquers all. Shawn is the ultimate boyfriend."

"Good. Evelyn finally got what she deserved. That scheming bitch is finally out of the picture. Our class lost a future Blackridge golden boy, and now, I need the universe to send me a winning lottery ticket to cope."

I paused for a second.

Then, I liked the post.

Shawn called near instantaneously.

"What are you trying to do now?" he demanded the moment I picked up. "Madison's emotionally fragile right now. I'm taking care of her. Don't you forget that she's helped you plenty before."

I replied softly, "I genuinely wish you and Madison the best."

He gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

"There's only one month left," he said. "Madison ended up like this because of me. I have a responsibility to take care of her. Evelyn, I need you to be mature about this. Stop making a scene."

The one month he meant was the time left before freshman move-in.

However, I had never agreed to bring him with me.

Still, I chose not to argue.

My silence appeared to catch him off guard. Then, it seemed that he had somehow convinced himself that I was still pliable because he said softly, "Evelyn, I'll make it right. I'll only stay with her this month. I will be forever yours after that."

I nearly burst out laughing.

I didn't bother explaining. I just hung up.

As days passed, Shawn and Madison became ubiquitous.

Shawn declared his love loudly and recklessly. It was as if he needed the entire world to witness it.

For their first post-graduation trip, he took Madison horseback riding across an endless green prairie. The two of them seemed to glow beneath the golden sunset light as they whispered love confessions to each other.

For their first couple's photo shoot, Madison draped herself over him in barely-there outfits, smiling as if she had already won.

They rode a Ferris wheel together, and he kissed her like they were filming the final scene of a romance movie when they got to the very top.

As if that weren't enough, he somehow felt that he needed to defend himself whenever he did something romantic with Madison. So, he would text me right after.

"Evelyn, I know you're not into traveling, so I bought you a camcorder. You can use it to record

our future together at Blackridge."

I replied with two words, "It's fine."

He called immediately, his voice turning sharp. "What? Do you have a problem with that? Madison and I are not like that. She's dealing with depression, and her doctor said she needs to get out more."

Then, he scoffed. "You're supposed to be the smart one. Can't you at least try to act generous?"

"I really don't care," I shot back. "You're overthinking it."

I hung up before he could say another word.

Honestly, I meant every word.

I genuinely didn't care.

There was a time when I used to bring him breakfast every day. I would pile on fruit, drinks, and whatever snacks he liked just to win him over.

I used to deliberately hold back on tests to keep our scores close enough that no one would rank us apart, just so I could sit near him in class.

He got stacks of love letters all the time. Every single one ended up in my hands because he always tossed them to me and told me to deal with them.

I grossly misunderstood his actions.

I had foolishly thought that it meant he liked me, too.

That was how my unrequited love had started. It had been a tiny yet innocently foolish bud. I was young, so I naively believed every word he said, especially the ones that claimed that we'd get into the same school and never be apart.

So, I didn't hesitate when Blackridge University's admissions team extended that offer to me. I wanted to bring him with me. I wanted to take him across that threshold into a world of privilege, prestige, and endless possibilities.

I never imagined it would end with my entire family destroyed.

So, I chose to stay out of his way.

The experiment I participated in gained great success in just five years. I published many theses in famous scientific magazines thanks to the breakthrough and became one of the campus' youngest PhD holders.I returned to my hometown for a quick visit, but someone held me hostage at knifepoint in front of everyone. "Don't move, or I'll kill you! Give me all your money now!"That voice sent shivers crawling up my spine. I knew who they were—Madison. She held her knife against my throat and dragged me into her car.Madison stepped on the pedal and rushed off. She ran through multiple red lights and toppled several motorbikes on the way. Eventually, we arrived at a remote spot out in the countryside.I was killed here in my previous life. "Do you recognize this place, Evelyn? I'm sure it makes you wet your bed at night, doesn't it? This is definitely some good nightmare fuel." She giggled, but there was nothing funny about it. "Everything will change if you just die another time. I

A year passed while I wasn't looking, and I finally had some time off. So, I decided to make a trip back to Yarland. I received a text from an unknown number the moment I landed."Can we meet up, Eve? I've been doing a lot of thinking lately." I could tell right away that Shawn was the texter. The fiasco from a year ago was still fresh in my mind. I eventually learned that Shawn had been rejected by every single institution in the country. So, he used his infamy and started livestreaming. The Internet might never forget everything that was uploaded, but the people who used it would.Due to his spectacular looks, he quickly made it to the big leagues and had a sizable fan base. I chuckled and was going to delete the message when a second one came."I'll be at the same old spot. I'll be waiting there until you show up."Same old spot. He was referring to the old tree outside the school's side entrance. A stone table sat under the tree, and the canopy provided a cool shade. The o

Shawn calmly told every passer-by about our past during the first week of his apology campaign."She was cheeky as a kid. She stole the neighbor's oranges, so the dogs chased her for nearly a mile. She even left her pants along the way."Shes a gentle girl and always remembers my favorite food."Evelyn's really smart. She could answer every question the teachers had, beating the entire class by a landslide. Whenever she raised her hand, the teacher immediately knew that they made a mistake."As the second week rolled by, he was starting to get frustrated when I still hadn't shown up. He kept asking the passers-by about me."Do you know Evelyn Shaw? She's my girlfriend. Here's a photo. Tell her I miss her if you see her. I've written this letter for Evelyn. Hand it to her, please."The guy took the letter and scoffed in disdain. "Loads of people write confession letters to her every day. Get in line, bud. You're probably on the waiting list for a month."Shawn nodded with a smile

Madison was buck naked and entangled with an equally naked man. "Slow down, Daddy. You should be gentler with me.""But you love it rough, you little slut." The man panted. "This is your boyfriend's place. What if he runs into us while we're fucking? It's daytime.""Him? He's a snob. He's going to leech off his valedictorian girlfriend, who got into Blackridge. That guy won't come back anytime soon.""He has a valedictorian girlfriend? Then, why would he choose a college girl like you?" The man's voice dripped with cruelty as he pounded Madison harder."I hate Evelyn, so I messed around with the man of her dreams. He's the hottest guy in class, but he simps for me. "All I have to do is look at him seductively, and he'll take his clothes off like a dog in heat. And then I orchestrated a kidnapping. He thought Evelyn was the mastermind and wanted to skin her alive. He even broke her leg just to 'avenge' me. "Everyone thinks he's uptight, but he's kinky. He fucks me like there's n

  • The Day I Chose Myself   Chapter 6 He Shows Up

I joined the student government the day after I started the term. I became president just as everyone thought I would be. At the time of my unfortunate meeting with Shawn, Leslie Jefferson, head of the Arts Department, was walking with me.Shawn, who was still holding a livestream, dragged me over and declared our relationship. "Sorry, Eve's country girl, so she might mess up. I'm sorry in advance if she screws things up."He put a finger to my lips like a loving boyfriend and signaled me to shut up.Leslie looked at me, surprised. "Is he your boyfriend, prez?"My high school classmates were laughing. "I can't believe Evelyn hired an actor just to rile Shawn up.""Hah, Shawn's going to teach her a lesson. I can't wait.""I wonder if Evelyn's going to walk through coal this time."Leslie noticed the mockery coming from the livestream, and the air turned awkward.I shook my head slowly. "No, he's just someone I know from high school. You should go on without me."Shawn's face tw

I got a call from an unknown number three days after the start of the term. However, I knew who the caller was once they started talking—Shawn. His voice sounded like static to my ears. "That's enough messing around, Evelyn. You got yourself registered and left me standing like an idiot! You're dead meat!"I was stunned. I didn't recall ever saying that I'd bring him to Blackridge. "Are you done? No? Then, I'm hanging up."Before I could hang up, Shawn chastised me, "Don't push it, Evelyn. You should be grateful I'm making the first move. Hey, chat, say yes if you want Evelyn begging for my mercy. Tell me if you want to see Blackridge! I'll show you what it's like!"My high school classmates' voices echoed in the background on the other side."Way to go, Shawn! Playing with a Blackridge student like Evelyn like she's your doll? She should feel lucky!""Is that a top student groveling for love? Ooh, drama. When's it going to start?""Shawn's hot, and he got into Blackridge. H
