Chapter 3 On My Birthday, He Made Me the Punchline

Author: Clara Rainford
It was no surprise that word of Shawn and Madison's relationship got back to his mother.

That same night, Madison "accidentally" fell and broke her leg.

Shawn was pounding on my front door at midnight.

He slapped me the second I opened it.

The force sent my head snapping to the side.

"So it really was you," he spat. "You told on us, didn't you? You vicious bitch."

I frowned and looked back at him. "I didn't."

I had always covered for all his ridiculous and reckless actions in the past. Now that I had a second chance, I swiftly decided I was done involving myself in anything that had to do with him.

Still, I would never stoop so low as to tell on them.

Frankly, I hadn't said a word to anyone.

He let out a cold laugh. "Wow. You really went all out just to break us up."

His eyes turned flinty with disgust. "Forget it. There's no point talking to someone as rotten as you. You've been dying to split Madison and me up from the very beginning."

He brushed past my shoulder and stormed back out into the rain without another glance.

Judging by the direction he was heading, he was likely going to the hospital.

...

He called me again the next day.

To my surprise, there wasn't a hint of anger in his tone. In fact, he sounded so tender and loving.

"Eve, you have to come tonight," he said. "It's your party. You're the guest of honor."

That was when I realized I had forgotten my own birthday.

"No thanks," I declined swiftly.

"You're coming," he replied smoothly. "It won't mean anything without you there."

He hung up before I could get another word in edgewise.

...

My classmates practically dragged me to the hotel that night.

The second I walked into the room, my eyes were drawn to the enormous cake in the center of the room.

It was shaped like a jet plane, towering several tiers high.

Shawn stood beside it, smiling brightly. "Evelyn, I know your dream is to go into aerospace engineering. Do you like it?"

I froze. 'He remembered?'

For a brief moment, the calm I had fought so hard to keep cracked ever so slightly.

'Is this Shawn, the one appearing thoughtful, warm, and almost tender… truly the same person who had killed my family in a past life?'

I felt a flicker of doubt rising in me for the first time since my rebirth.

Then, something even stranger happened.

My classmates, who had mocked me without mercy, suddenly wore soft smiles as they gathered around and sang me happy birthday.

The lights dimmed when it was time for me to make a wish.

Mist drifted through the room in pale ribbons, carrying the scent of perfume.

Dark wood, warm and rich.

It was Frederic Malle, the exact fragrance I loved most.

My eyes began to sting.

Then, the lights came back on.

Madison was wheeled into the room in a princess gown with a bouquet cradled in her arms.

The entire room erupted.

"Happy birthday, Madison!"

I went still. 'Right. It's her birthday too.'

Shawn took her bouquet and pulled her into a deep, dramatic kiss to the crowd's delighted shrieks.

The humiliation hit me all at once, hot and suffocating.

I turned to leave, but someone grabbed my shoulders and held me in place. "Evelyn, where do you think you're going?"

I looked straight at Shawn, my voice cold. "Why should I stay? Should I stay here and play the voyeur by watching the two of you play the happy couple?"

His face hardened. "Grovel and beg for Madison. Only then can you leave."

I stared, thinking that I had misheard him. "What?"

He looked at me, his anger simmering just beneath the surface. "I'll say it one more time. This will only end after you grovel and apologize to Madison."

Before I could speak, Madison's eyes reddened.

"Evelyn, I know you hate me," she whispered tremulously. "I know you're upset that Shawn chose me.

"But I never meant to take him from you. We just... fell in love. There was nothing either of us could do about it. Honestly, it's a good thing you told his mom. At least I was the one she took it out on, not Shawn. I never would've forgiven myself if she'd hurt him instead."

I stared at her blankly, parroting after her, "Told his mom?"

Shawn's expression darkened the second I said that.

He didn't take his eyes off me as he signaled toward the projector.

A video flashed onto the giant screen.

The experiment I participated in gained great success in just five years. I published many theses in famous scientific magazines thanks to the breakthrough and became one of the campus' youngest PhD holders.I returned to my hometown for a quick visit, but someone held me hostage at knifepoint in front of everyone. "Don't move, or I'll kill you! Give me all your money now!"That voice sent shivers crawling up my spine. I knew who they were—Madison. She held her knife against my throat and dragged me into her car.Madison stepped on the pedal and rushed off. She ran through multiple red lights and toppled several motorbikes on the way. Eventually, we arrived at a remote spot out in the countryside.I was killed here in my previous life. "Do you recognize this place, Evelyn? I'm sure it makes you wet your bed at night, doesn't it? This is definitely some good nightmare fuel." She giggled, but there was nothing funny about it. "Everything will change if you just die another time. I

A year passed while I wasn't looking, and I finally had some time off. So, I decided to make a trip back to Yarland. I received a text from an unknown number the moment I landed."Can we meet up, Eve? I've been doing a lot of thinking lately." I could tell right away that Shawn was the texter. The fiasco from a year ago was still fresh in my mind. I eventually learned that Shawn had been rejected by every single institution in the country. So, he used his infamy and started livestreaming. The Internet might never forget everything that was uploaded, but the people who used it would.Due to his spectacular looks, he quickly made it to the big leagues and had a sizable fan base. I chuckled and was going to delete the message when a second one came."I'll be at the same old spot. I'll be waiting there until you show up."Same old spot. He was referring to the old tree outside the school's side entrance. A stone table sat under the tree, and the canopy provided a cool shade. The o

Shawn calmly told every passer-by about our past during the first week of his apology campaign."She was cheeky as a kid. She stole the neighbor's oranges, so the dogs chased her for nearly a mile. She even left her pants along the way."Shes a gentle girl and always remembers my favorite food."Evelyn's really smart. She could answer every question the teachers had, beating the entire class by a landslide. Whenever she raised her hand, the teacher immediately knew that they made a mistake."As the second week rolled by, he was starting to get frustrated when I still hadn't shown up. He kept asking the passers-by about me."Do you know Evelyn Shaw? She's my girlfriend. Here's a photo. Tell her I miss her if you see her. I've written this letter for Evelyn. Hand it to her, please."The guy took the letter and scoffed in disdain. "Loads of people write confession letters to her every day. Get in line, bud. You're probably on the waiting list for a month."Shawn nodded with a smile

Madison was buck naked and entangled with an equally naked man. "Slow down, Daddy. You should be gentler with me.""But you love it rough, you little slut." The man panted. "This is your boyfriend's place. What if he runs into us while we're fucking? It's daytime.""Him? He's a snob. He's going to leech off his valedictorian girlfriend, who got into Blackridge. That guy won't come back anytime soon.""He has a valedictorian girlfriend? Then, why would he choose a college girl like you?" The man's voice dripped with cruelty as he pounded Madison harder."I hate Evelyn, so I messed around with the man of her dreams. He's the hottest guy in class, but he simps for me. "All I have to do is look at him seductively, and he'll take his clothes off like a dog in heat. And then I orchestrated a kidnapping. He thought Evelyn was the mastermind and wanted to skin her alive. He even broke her leg just to 'avenge' me. "Everyone thinks he's uptight, but he's kinky. He fucks me like there's n

I joined the student government the day after I started the term. I became president just as everyone thought I would be. At the time of my unfortunate meeting with Shawn, Leslie Jefferson, head of the Arts Department, was walking with me.Shawn, who was still holding a livestream, dragged me over and declared our relationship. "Sorry, Eve's country girl, so she might mess up. I'm sorry in advance if she screws things up."He put a finger to my lips like a loving boyfriend and signaled me to shut up.Leslie looked at me, surprised. "Is he your boyfriend, prez?"My high school classmates were laughing. "I can't believe Evelyn hired an actor just to rile Shawn up.""Hah, Shawn's going to teach her a lesson. I can't wait.""I wonder if Evelyn's going to walk through coal this time."Leslie noticed the mockery coming from the livestream, and the air turned awkward.I shook my head slowly. "No, he's just someone I know from high school. You should go on without me."Shawn's face tw

I got a call from an unknown number three days after the start of the term. However, I knew who the caller was once they started talking—Shawn. His voice sounded like static to my ears. "That's enough messing around, Evelyn. You got yourself registered and left me standing like an idiot! You're dead meat!"I was stunned. I didn't recall ever saying that I'd bring him to Blackridge. "Are you done? No? Then, I'm hanging up."Before I could hang up, Shawn chastised me, "Don't push it, Evelyn. You should be grateful I'm making the first move. Hey, chat, say yes if you want Evelyn begging for my mercy. Tell me if you want to see Blackridge! I'll show you what it's like!"My high school classmates' voices echoed in the background on the other side."Way to go, Shawn! Playing with a Blackridge student like Evelyn like she's your doll? She should feel lucky!""Is that a top student groveling for love? Ooh, drama. When's it going to start?""Shawn's hot, and he got into Blackridge. H
