Chapter 6

Author: Anonymous
Shirley was about to pop the pill into my mouth when the shrill ring of the phone cut through the silence.

It was Hank.

Her face twisted, caught off guard, and she almost hung up, but I said coolly, "Take it."

She let out a relieved breath, and Hank's voice, charged with excitement, filled the room, "Shirley! The test results are in! You're pregnant! I'm gonna be a dad!"

Shirley went pale as a ghost.

The cup slipped from my grasp and shattered on the floor.

I was such a fool. When two hearts are in sync, how could they not cross that final hurdle?

I was the only one fooled into thinking there was just a meeting of minds, always making excuses for her.

A bitter laugh escaped me, "Well, my wife. Pregnant with another man's baby, right when we're planning our wedding, Shirley, do you ever tell the truth?"

After it was all over, I stepped out of the police station.I lit up a cigarette. The smoke curled up as a Ferrari by the curb rolled down its window.Harriet looked at me, asking, "What happened?"I gave a nod, the weight of resolution settling in my chest. "Everything's taken care of."The warmth from the car's heater wrapped around us as I handed her the USB drive."Thanks for this."Shirley, bless her heart, would never have given up her phone's password, not with all that business intel locked away on it. That's why I had to get Harriet to shoot the video.Years of knowing Shirley taught me one thing: she would cling on for dear life, and if she was going down, she would try to take me with her. I could not gamble with my family's safety. I had to take her down first. We sat in a heavy silence until I could not take it anymore. "Why'd you help me?"Her lips quivered, a tremor of emotion breaking through. "In a previous life, I did you wrong."Her words hit me like a thu

The video that played caught him off guard; the star was his dear wife, Shirley. Her partner in crime? Her assistant. They were wrapped up in each other, a sickening sight."Thought you had the upper hand? A woman who'd double-cross me, you think she'd stay true to you?"I took my time savoring a sip of coffee, watching his face go through a rollercoaster of emotions."No way! This is a lie! That video's gotta be fake!"Before, our beef was just a war of words, but now? It was an all-out battle.Hank's face was a masterpiece of shock, and with every ounce of strength, he managed to spit out."What the hell are you up to?"I waved my phone with a calm smirk. "I've cracked every password on her phone, got total access. Bet you didn't know that, huh? These videos were right there in her gallery, plain as day."Hank shook like a leaf, his eyes blazing red.He never had the right to snoop through Shirley's phone, she claimed it was all confidential work stuff. However, me? I cou

Shirley paused, wrestling with a tough choice. At last, she looked up at me, determination in her eyes."I've got this under control. He won't be a problem for us anymore, I promise."I could not help but chuckle at her assurance."However, what about everyone else? You guys had a whole wedding and everything."Shirley's eyes flashed with a mix of determination and annoyance. "Don't sweat it. We're only staying married for two years. Once that's done, I'll announce our split, and we'll go our separate ways."After that, our reputation will be spotless. I'll marry you right away, and you'll be my one and only."She nodded to herself, clearly pleased with her master plan. I realized just how shameless someone could be.Harriet burst out before I could respond."So, you want your cake and eat it too? Have Anthony on the side? How can you even suggest that?"Did you forget all the sweet nothings you whispered when you were wooing him?"She was right. I remembered that blizzard,

When I next opened my eyes, Shirley's supervisor was there.Harriet White.I thought I was still half-asleep, so I rubbed my eyes and took a good look.I was shocked. In my previous life, the only socializing we did was when I went with Shirley to company parties. After my death, she actually came back to visit me.I just could not wrap my head around it. She was sobbing her heart out, as if her life depended on it.All that for someone she barely knew? Really? However, what threw me for a loop was finding her in the hospital room. Was it just happenstance? Before I could get to the bottom of it, Shirley burst in like a whirlwind."Honey! Honey, how are you feeling? I've been so worried!"Harriet stepped in front of her, blocking the door with outstretched arms. "What are you doing here? Upset that he's still kicking? Trying to push him over the edge?"Shirley froze; her first impulse was to lash back, but she bit her tongue, considering Harriet's position. Her face flush

The hospital was abuzz when Shirley's father, Bennett Lowell, started yelling at the top of his lungs in the hallway."You can't blame it all on my daughter! If this guy hadn't run his mouth off, none of this would've happened!"Shirley was shaking, not expecting things to escalate."Yes! Yes! I was freaked out, and getting cursed out on my wedding day, I was obviously upset, you get that, right?"'Understand you? As if. Drop dead.' I seethed silently. The doctor was stitching me up, and even with his years of experience, he could not help but suck in a breath at the sight of my wound."You're lucky. This is a nasty one, almost hitting the bone. You could've ended up paralyzed!"Shirley jumped in hastily. "Even if you were paralyzed, I'd be there for you!"The word 'paralyzed' triggered a flood of bitter memories. "Shut up!"It was the first time I ever snapped at her, and she was taken aback.I turned to Bennett."Mr. Lowell, it seems like you've forgotten that on her wed
