Chapter 1

Just before I reached the front gate, Dominic called after me.

"Mia. Take off the ring. Alina likes it."

That ring had been his promise to me. It was worth a fortune, and I'd worn it on my finger for five years. I was used to its weight.

But once love was gone, even the most expensive token was just a cold piece of metal.

Besides, I hadn't forgotten what happened the last time I refused to give Alina what she wanted. I'd refused to hand over my sunglasses in the desert. He left me out there. It took me three days on foot to find my way back.

I slid the ring off without hesitation and put it on Alina's finger.

"I hope you and Dominic last forever."

Dominic's voice softened a little.

"Mia, if you behave, you can still live here with us. Alina and I are both used to you taking care of us."

Alina shook the ring off her finger before he'd even finished. She held up her hand. Her eyes filled with tears.

"Dominic, it hurts. I'm allergic to metal."

There was a red rash on her finger where the ring had sat.

Dominic turned on me, furious.

"I just told you Alina has sensitive skin. And you put an allergen on her anyway!"

He didn't look at me again. He scooped Alina up like she was made of glass and barked at the housekeeper to call the family doctor.

The servants watched me with quiet amusement, enjoying the contrast.

I almost laughed too.

Yesterday, he'd brought Alina home and cooked dinner himself. He'd carefully avoided every one of her allergens. He just hadn't bothered to remember that I was allergic to pepper, and he'd put it in everything.

I went into anaphylactic shock and collapsed on the kitchen floor, foaming at the mouth.

He hadn't looked at me. He'd taken Alina's hand and stepped over my body on the way out.

The last thing I heard before I passed out was him telling the housekeeper, "Clean this up. I don't want it to ruin Alina's appetite."

I tightened my grip on the suitcase handle and turned to leave. Dominic grabbed my wrist.

"Apologize."

"What—"

He didn't let me finish. He dragged me down to my knees in front of Alina.

My body still hadn't recovered. The room kept tilting. I covered my mouth. I was going to be sick.

Dominic dropped my hand like it disgusted him.

"If you hadn't put that ring on her without asking, she wouldn't be having a reaction. Don't you think you owe her an apology?"

From anyone else, that accusation would have been laughable.

But I'd been with Dominic for nine years. I'd learned to apologize for everything.

Sorry for not pressing his shirt right.

Sorry for not being eager enough in bed.

Sorry for walking in on him and Alina flirting when I brought him lunch at the office.

The reasons didn't have to make sense. If he wanted an apology, no reason was required at all.

I clenched my fists.

I bowed three times to Alina, exactly the way one was supposed to. I said "I'm sorry" three times, clearly and slowly.

Then I turned to Dominic calmly.

"Is that enough?"

[Mia's POV]Dominic turned his head toward me. His face lit up. He tried to speak. His voice gave out.He held the ring out to me. His eyes were full of hope."The ring. I got it back.""And Alina. I had her get rid of the baby. She'll never come near us again.""Come home with me. Please."I took the ring from him.He started to smile.I closed my fingers around it, and it crumbled to dust.I started telling him a story instead."There's an old story I read once. A man on a boat dropped his favorite jewel into the river.""He wasn't worried. He just made a mark on the side of the boat where it had fallen. He said when the boat reached shore, he'd dive in at that spot and find it again.""Stupid, right?"He didn't answer. He'd understood. The ring was the mark on the boat.He could find the ring. The boat had moved. He couldn't find what he'd loved.Everything hit him at once. Regret. Self-hatred. Grief. His eyes went red. He couldn't stop the tears."Please. Just one more chance.""I

[Dominic's POV]I grabbed her without thinking.I knew. If I let her walk out that door, I would never see her again. She shook me off. She didn't try to hide the disgust on her face. She turned to Tristan. "Show him out of Twilight Valley."Tristan gestured at the door. "This way, sir.""Do you know who I am? Don't you dare speak to me like that!"He didn't blink. "This is Twilight Valley. The Alpha King's territory. The lady doesn't want you here. I don't care who you are.""Walk out, or I'll throw you out."I forced down the rage."That won't be necessary."I left.I drove straight back to Moon Stone Pack. I didn't stop. Her words kept playing."I still liked the first one better."The ring. That ring.If I could find that ring, she'd forgive me.I made it home in two hours.I was almost at the door when I heard Alina on the phone inside.I stopped without thinking. I didn't go in.She was furious."Did you tell Dominic that I had you crash into Mia's car? That I made her lose the b

[Dominic's POV]It wasn't Mia. It was Tristan.I frowned. "Why are you here? Where's Mia?"His tone was clinical. "You don't get to ask where she is. She sent me to deal with you. Whatever you need, tell me.""You're nothing. I want her. Get her in here."He didn't answer right away. He looked around the room, slowly, then said, "She has a lot of admirers. You'll need something more original. This won't get her attention."In other words: weak. Predictable. My chest filled with heat."Are you trying to humiliate me?"He stayed calm. "Then I suppose you must already feel small."I swung at him. He moved out of the way before I'd even finished raising my arm. I didn't see how he did it.I drew back to throw another punch. A voice cut me off."Stop."I turned. "Mia!"Her eyes were ice.She was looking at me the way you'd look at a stranger who'd come too close.No. That wasn't right. She wasn't allowed to look at me like that.I panicked.I forced a smile. I pulled out the ring. I went do

[Dominic's POV]I watched her walk away. My fists tightened. All those small things she'd done lately. Looking back, the signs had been there.I'd been blind. But this. The Alpha King's daughter. There was no way I could have seen it coming.Nine years ago, I'd found her in the woods, half-starved, alone. I'd brought her home because I'd recognized her as my fated mate. But she didn't have a name. She didn't have a wolf. She was a nobody Omega. The Luna of Moon Stone Pack couldn't be a weak Omega like that.So even though we lived as mates, even though we had a child, I never marked her. I never made her my Luna. This was different. She was the Alpha King's daughter. Higher status than Alina. Alina was just the daughter of one of my Gammas. The thing that had been in my way was gone. She should be happy. Why was she telling me no?She was still hung up on Alina and the baby. That was it.What I'd offered wasn't enough for her. I hadn't been sincere enough.I lit a cigarette. I thought

[Mia's POV]I felt someone staring at me.I followed the line of it. Dominic. Why was he here?I didn't let it show. The pause was a fraction of a second. The speech came next. I read it through, every line clean and steady. The applause was loud.Whispers ran through the crowd."I thought a girl who'd been raised outside the pack would be nervous up there. Look at her.""That's the Alpha King's blood for you."I bowed and walked off the stage. The reception started right after. People circled me, all wanting a piece. After a while I needed air, and I went out to the terrace. That was when Dominic appeared. He grabbed my arm and pulled me close, voice low."Have you lost your mind, Mia? You're impersonating the Alpha King's daughter?"I almost laughed. He saw the look on my face and his voice got harder."How long are you going to keep this up? Come back with me right now. I can talk to him. I can keep you alive."I shook his hand off and let him feel it — the full weight of the Alpha

[Dominic's POV]"Dominic, is our baby okay?"Alina's eyes were wide and pleading. I pulled her closer without thinking."The doctor said the baby's perfect. Yesterday's accident didn't affect him at all.""Thank god. You looked so serious from the moment we walked in. You weren't saying anything. I thought something was wrong with the baby."Her words made me pause. For a second I saw Mia's eyes. Cold. Looking through me.I'd left in a hurry yesterday. I'd forgotten she was still on that balcony. But the house was full of guards. And Alina was pregnant. Of course Alina came first. That was obvious.I pulled out my phone again and checked my messages.Mia hadn't sent me a single word. Not one.She used to follow me around like a puppy. The colder I was to her, the harder she tried. Now she'd learned to play games.I let out a small laugh and led Alina out of the obstetrics ward, careful to support her weight. I made sure she got home safely.I'd just walked into my study when the Beta c
