Chapter 3

Penulis: AngelCat
The letter never mentioned drugs. It promised the rest of the payment once the job was done and reminded Paolo to place "the item" in Room 217. The item could have been the wine or the camera. My handwriting had been copied well enough that Father declared the letter mine after a single glance.

"Serafina has been copying guest lists for my family banquets," he said coldly. "Paolo could have obtained a sample of her handwriting. But she also had every opportunity to contact him."

"I didn't."

"Evidence doesn't vanish because you deny it," Luca said.

I looked at him.

It had been the same after my sister died. Her shoes were found beside the river. The suicide note was in her handwriting. Someone claimed to have seen us arguing that night. Every piece of evidence pointed to me, so Luca decided I was guilty and stopped looking.

"Then investigate," I said. "Trace the paper. Check the typewriter ribbon. Find out who Paolo met recently. And find out what happened in the fifteen minutes erased between my arrival in the ballroom and the moment the drug took effect."

"What fifteen minutes?"

Only after the words left me did I realize I had mentioned something I should not know. In my first life, the recording began when I picked up the champagne, but fifteen minutes were missing from the middle. Luca had kept the footage locked in his study safe for years, treating it as proof of my guilt. The memory card had not been found yet. I had to change course.

"The fifteen minutes around Paolo's death," I said. "If he died before the banquet began, then whoever delivered the wine to Room 217 was using his identity."

Luca did not press me, but he did not release me either.

"Until we know the truth, you stay at the estate."

"You're locking me up?"

"You can walk to the guest room yourself, or my men can take you there."

He spoke as though the choice were reasonable. Nothing about him had changed. Luca had always called surveillance protection, and it had never occurred to him that anyone might refuse it.

I did not argue.

"Third room in the west wing," I said.

His eyes narrowed.

"How do you know where the guest rooms are?"

"The estate plans aren't secret."

In truth, I had lived in that room for three months. After Isabella's death and before our wedding, Luca kept me there with guards outside the door day and night. The window opened no more than a crack. It was there that I discovered an old servants' passage behind the wardrobe. Half an hour later, the guard locked me inside.

I shifted the board beneath the wardrobe and pressed the third brick in the wall. A hidden door opened without a sound. The passage led to the estate's old records room. I took a maid's uniform from a cleaning closet, avoided the patrols, and left through the kitchen door.

At two in the morning, the accounting office of Vitale Shipping was still lit. The port never slept. Neither did the ledgers used to launder money for the Mafia. Antonia Bellandi sat at the last desk, her hair twisted up with a pencil, frowning at a stack of freight invoices. She was twenty-three.

Her husband would one day die in an accident on the docks. Father would use the disaster against her and force her to falsify accounts for ten years. Much later, she would hide money for my escape and be driven out of Palermo for it. None of that had happened yet. Naturally, she did not know me.

"Miss Vitale?" She stood. "What are you doing here?"

"I need you to trace a payment."

"I take orders from Mr. Enzo."

"Seven strands in the main cable of Crane Three at Pier Seven have snapped. Your husband is scheduled for the night shift next Tuesday."

Antonia gripped the edge of the desk.

"What did you say?"

"Tell him to call in sick, or have him inspect the cable now." I slid a sheet of paper toward her. "Then find the expense marked 'White Rose.'"

She did not touch the paper.

"How do you know about my husband?"

"I've seen the accident report for that crane," I said. "Call him first. Once he confirms the cable is damaged, you can decide whether to help me."

She picked up the phone. Her first call was to her husband. When she hung up, she opened the company's internal accounts.

"White Rose" received a payment every month. The recipient was the St. Agatha Benevolent Society. The amounts were small, but they never stopped.

Three days ago, Father had transferred an additional two hundred thousand dollars. The note contained only four characters.

B-17.

"Warehouse Seventeen in Sector B," Antonia said. "It's abandoned. A shell company owns it."

I remembered the place.

In my first life, my sister's body was found in a bend of the river less than two kilometers from B-17.

"Make three copies of the accounts. Give one to a lawyer you trust, put one in a safe-deposit box, and the last--"

The office lights went out. In the darkness, the sound of a weapon being cocked was unmistakable. I pushed Antonia beneath the desk and drew the pistol I had taken from the estate. A man's low voice came from the doorway.

"Serafina. Put down the gun."

Luca.

The lights returned.

He stood in the doorway, night dew still clinging to the hem of his black coat. Marco and two guards waited behind him. Luca glanced at the computer screen, then fixed his eyes on me.

"You escaped the estate to investigate your father's books?"

"You wouldn't believe me, so I had to investigate for myself."

"I told you to stay because I was protecting you."

"Is protection what you call locking a door?"

He came closer and took the gun from my fingers.

"You seem very familiar with cages."

"More familiar than you know."

We stood close enough for me to smell the remnants of the drug on him. On our wedding night in my first life, he had stood before me in the same way, gripped my chin, and asked, "Are you satisfied now?" I stepped back without thinking. Luca noticed. His hand stopped in midair. In the end, he did not touch me.

"Serafina," he asked quietly. "What are you so afraid I'll do?"

"I'm not afraid of you." I met his gaze. "I simply won't let you make my decisions anymore."

Marco's phone rang. He answered, spoke twice, and went rigid.

"Sir, Miss Isabella is missing."

The guard on the other end spoke rapidly.

"There's blood in her room. The window is open, and we found a rope on the outer wall."

I looked at the warehouse number on the screen.

B-17.

My sister's body had been found nearby in my first life. Whoever had taken her might be bringing her to the same place now.

Luca's first order as Don was to dismantle the St. Agatha Benevolent Society.Every company and warehouse tied to Salvatore was seized, and every secret account was frozen. The men who abducted my sister were tried. The police and medical examiner he had bought lost their protection. His second order abolished every Moretti subsidiary contract contingent on marriage. Several capos objected. Luca instructed Marco, in front of them, to reopen the records of their port businesses. The meeting grew quiet. Father was buried in the Vitale crypt. I did not attend the funeral. My sister did. When she returned, she threw the family ring Father once wore into the fireplace and watched it blacken in the flames."I thought I would be sad," she said."You can be.""Because he's dead?""Because he was still our father. He never treated us as daughters, but that doesn't mean you aren't allowed to grieve."My sister cried for a long time. After that, we rarely spoke of Enzo Vitale. Two months later, s

The family council convened in the old Moretti shipyard.Three Dons had taken power there, and countless traitors had been executed beneath its roof. A table for twelve stood at the center of the building, its far end facing an unfinished dry dock.Salvatore occupied the head seat. He had plainly decided he was the next Don."Luca lost control at his own engagement banquet, then allowed two women to manipulate Moretti guards and ports," he told the assembled capos. "Now Isabella is dead. What right does he have to lead this family?""And if I'm not dead?"My sister's voice came from the shipyard entrance. Every head turned. She wore a long black dress, one hand over her abdomen and the other linked through my arm.The guards raised their guns.Luca's men surrounded the shipyard from every side. For the first time, Salvatore stopped smiling."This is a conspiracy," he said."It is." I set the red ledger on the long table. "One that began five years ago."Antonia explained the accounts i

Three weeks later, I rented an office at the port with a leaking roof.A new wooden sign hung on the door.Aurora Shipping. The company had two employees: Antonia and me. Our starting capital came from the trust my mother had left behind. Father had blocked the money for years on the grounds that I was unmarried. Armed with his confession and the false accounts, I challenged the restriction through the trustee bank. The bank wanted no part in a scandal between two families. It released the funds that same day.Antonia's husband repaired Crane Three, then joined us with six dockworkers. I owned no ships. All I had was temporary operating authority over Berth Seven, but the name on the document was mine. Luca came every day. On the first day, he brought twelve armed guards. I made every one of them wait outside. On the second day, he brought a Moretti shipping contract. I removed the right-of-first-refusal clause and raised our profit by thirty percent before signing the final page. On t

A sharp smell seeped beneath the door. Not poison gas. Gasoline.Salvatore meant to burn the entire crypt, with us and the ledger inside. Luca took off his coat and stuffed it against the gap beneath the door, then used his phone to light the room. There was no signal underground. The only exit was locked."Put the ledger back in the metal box," he said."Then what?""If only one person can get out, you go first with the evidence."I looked up at him."And you?""I'll find another way.""Don't waste time." I aimed my phone toward the rear of the crypt. "We find another exit now."Behind one of the stone coffins stood an arch covered in dust. During renovations in my first life, workers had discovered an old ossuary there. It connected to the ruins of a monastery behind the hill, though part of the passage had collapsed years ago. We had no other choice.Luca broke through the thin bricks sealing the arch with the butt of his gun. I pulled away loose stones. The moment we opened a hole

News of Isabella's death spread across Palermo the next morning. The Moretti family announced that she had died from injuries sustained during her abduction. To preserve her dignity, the funeral would use a closed coffin. No one would be permitted to view the body.My sister was moved to a seaside house that did not appear in any Moretti record. At first, no one approved of the plan. Luca called it too dangerous. Dr. Rossi worried about her health. Marco feared what would happen if the lie was exposed. Isabella listened to them argue and made the decision herself."They truly meant to kill me." She set the threatening letter on the table. "If I disappear, they'll believe they succeeded. I'm willing to try."She cut her hair short, changed into ordinary clothes, and left the estate without looking back. In the past, she had followed every instruction Father gave. I had assumed obedience came naturally to her. Only now did I understand that she had never been offered another choice. The

That evening, I returned to the Vitale estate alone. I told no one, and I brought no Moretti guards.Antonia had hidden a recorder in my earring. Its signal transmitted to a receiver outside the estate. Even if Father found it, everything already recorded would remain in her hands. I only needed to make him talk. The main light in the study was off.Father stood by the window smoking a cigar. A photograph of me lay on his desk beside a completed marriage contract. The groom was Alessandro, Salvatore's only son."Sit," Father said.I remained standing."You had a second marriage contract ready all along.""The Vitales cannot afford to offend both Moretti bloodlines.""So Isabella marries Luca, and I marry his cousin. No matter which man becomes Don, you win."Father turned around."Everything I do is for the Vitale family.""Including drugging me?""I don't know what you're talking about.""You know I didn't drink it." I made myself smile. "Otherwise, you wouldn't have made that mistake
