Chapter 2

Penulis: AngelCat
Sealing the Moretti estate was easier than I expected. Luca gave one order, and the guards locked every exit.

I had been the Don's wife for thirty years, yet even the smallest decision had required his approval. He had not inherited the family yet, and I was only the overlooked second daughter of the Vitales. Still, one sentence from him made the entire estate obey me. It was useful. I did not mistake usefulness for kindness.

The guests were divided into three groups. The women remained in the ballroom. The family heads were taken to the sitting room. Everyone else surrendered coats, phones, and weapons. Marco sealed the kitchen and wine cellar. Twenty minutes later, he returned with bad news. Paolo, the wine steward, was dead.

His body lay at the back of the cellar, his neck broken from behind. He had died before I fired the first shot.

"Convenient. Clean. And he can't talk." Luca sat on the study sofa, his voice still rough from the drugs. "A scapegoat prepared in advance."

Dr. Rossi had ordered him to bed. Instead, Luca changed into a clean shirt, leaving only a square of bloodstained cotton visible beneath his cuff. He had always hated letting anyone see weakness. Even when he was young.

"Where is the camera?" I asked.

Marco placed the device on the desk.

"The memory card is missing. There was no wireless transmitter in the room, so the footage probably hasn't left the estate."

The card had to be somewhere inside. If its contents were released, neither family would let the matter go. Luca raised his eyes to me.

"You don't seem surprised."

"I saw enough upstairs. Someone drugged you and prepared to record what happened."

The study went quiet. Father sat at the far end of the long table, his expression dark.

"Mind your words."

"You should be more concerned about what your daughter nearly drank."

Father planted a hand on the table. Luca spoke first.

"Enzo. Let her finish."

"You knew where to find Rossi. You knew Isabella was pregnant. You knew there was a camera in Room 217. Explain."

I had known the question would come. He had interrogated me the same way after my sister died. I knelt before him then and said again and again that I did not know. He had not believed a word. Now I knew too much, but I had no way to explain where the memories came from.

"The roses in the planter changed color, so I suspected the wine. Rossi always sits near the kitchen at banquets because he hates cigar smoke. As for Isabella--"

I turned to my sister.

"She has refused every alcoholic drink lately, and she sent a maid to buy folic acid."

Isabella pressed her lips together but did not deny it. The explanations were imperfect, but true enough. Luca kept watching me.

"And the camera?"

"The painting was crooked. It looked as if someone had moved it recently."

Luca studied me for a moment, plainly unconvinced. Once, I would have analyzed every shift in his expression. Now I did not care what he thought. The study door opened. A guard entered carrying my handbag.

"Sir, we found this in Miss Vitale's bag."

An empty glass vial lay in a clear evidence pouch. Dr. Rossi took it, smelled it once, and immediately sealed it again.

"Same odor as the drug in the wine."

Father shot to his feet.

"Serafina!"

He swung at me. Luca caught his wrist before the blow landed. He had barely recovered from the drug, but his fingers closed firmly around the bone. Father tried to wrench free and failed. Luca did not look at him. His eyes stayed on me.

"Who had your bag?"

"Before the banquet, Father gave it to a maid for safekeeping."

"Are you accusing your own father?"

"I'm answering your question."

Only after Luca released him did Father pull his arm away.

"She's insane. She has always envied Isabella for this engagement. Now that her scheme has failed, she wants to blame me."

After Isabella died, Father had said the same thing: I had loved Luca since childhood, resented my sister, and entered that room on purpose. I used to think he had blamed me only because he was desperate to protect the family. Now the accusation sounded rehearsed.

"She doesn't envy me," Isabella said.

Everyone turned toward her. She removed the engagement ring from her finger and set it on the table.

"At least, she didn't tonight. I hid my pregnancy. I received a threat and insisted on holding the banquet anyway. Serafina saved me. She saved Luca too."

Father's voice cracked across the room. "Put the ring back on."

My sister's hand trembled, but she did not move. I had never seen her defy him this openly. Luca picked up the ring and closed it in his palm.

"The engagement is suspended."

"Luca, our families have already--"

"Someone threatened my child, drugged my wine, and installed a camera at the scene." Luca looked up. "The engagement waits until we know the truth."

He held out a hand to Marco. Marco gave him my bag and the glass vial. Luca searched the lining himself and pulled a scrap of white paper from the stitching. It was not mine. Half of a dark red emblem had been printed on it: a snake coiled around a key. I knew that symbol.

In my first life, a ring of white roses from the St. Agatha Benevolent Society had stood beside my sister's coffin. The same seal marked their ribbons. The society's chairman was Luca's uncle, Salvatore Moretti.

I raised my head.

Salvatore stood in the doorway. He was sixty, his silver hair combed straight back without a strand out of place. When he noticed everyone looking, he offered a kindly, puzzled smile.

"It seems I've missed the important part."

He approached Luca and patted his shoulder like a concerned uncle.

"Are you all right?"

Luca did not answer. I said nothing about the emblem either. Half a mark was not enough to accuse a family elder, especially while the vial remained in my bag. Salvatore's calm entrance meant he had prepared for this. Marco's phone rang.

He listened for a few seconds. His expression darkened.

"Sir, we found a letter in Paolo's locker."

He handed the phone to Luca.

The screen showed a sheet of paper unfolded across a table.

My name was signed at the bottom.

Serafina Vitale.

Luca's first order as Don was to dismantle the St. Agatha Benevolent Society.Every company and warehouse tied to Salvatore was seized, and every secret account was frozen. The men who abducted my sister were tried. The police and medical examiner he had bought lost their protection. His second order abolished every Moretti subsidiary contract contingent on marriage. Several capos objected. Luca instructed Marco, in front of them, to reopen the records of their port businesses. The meeting grew quiet. Father was buried in the Vitale crypt. I did not attend the funeral. My sister did. When she returned, she threw the family ring Father once wore into the fireplace and watched it blacken in the flames."I thought I would be sad," she said."You can be.""Because he's dead?""Because he was still our father. He never treated us as daughters, but that doesn't mean you aren't allowed to grieve."My sister cried for a long time. After that, we rarely spoke of Enzo Vitale. Two months later, s

The family council convened in the old Moretti shipyard.Three Dons had taken power there, and countless traitors had been executed beneath its roof. A table for twelve stood at the center of the building, its far end facing an unfinished dry dock.Salvatore occupied the head seat. He had plainly decided he was the next Don."Luca lost control at his own engagement banquet, then allowed two women to manipulate Moretti guards and ports," he told the assembled capos. "Now Isabella is dead. What right does he have to lead this family?""And if I'm not dead?"My sister's voice came from the shipyard entrance. Every head turned. She wore a long black dress, one hand over her abdomen and the other linked through my arm.The guards raised their guns.Luca's men surrounded the shipyard from every side. For the first time, Salvatore stopped smiling."This is a conspiracy," he said."It is." I set the red ledger on the long table. "One that began five years ago."Antonia explained the accounts i

Three weeks later, I rented an office at the port with a leaking roof.A new wooden sign hung on the door.Aurora Shipping. The company had two employees: Antonia and me. Our starting capital came from the trust my mother had left behind. Father had blocked the money for years on the grounds that I was unmarried. Armed with his confession and the false accounts, I challenged the restriction through the trustee bank. The bank wanted no part in a scandal between two families. It released the funds that same day.Antonia's husband repaired Crane Three, then joined us with six dockworkers. I owned no ships. All I had was temporary operating authority over Berth Seven, but the name on the document was mine. Luca came every day. On the first day, he brought twelve armed guards. I made every one of them wait outside. On the second day, he brought a Moretti shipping contract. I removed the right-of-first-refusal clause and raised our profit by thirty percent before signing the final page. On t

A sharp smell seeped beneath the door. Not poison gas. Gasoline.Salvatore meant to burn the entire crypt, with us and the ledger inside. Luca took off his coat and stuffed it against the gap beneath the door, then used his phone to light the room. There was no signal underground. The only exit was locked."Put the ledger back in the metal box," he said."Then what?""If only one person can get out, you go first with the evidence."I looked up at him."And you?""I'll find another way.""Don't waste time." I aimed my phone toward the rear of the crypt. "We find another exit now."Behind one of the stone coffins stood an arch covered in dust. During renovations in my first life, workers had discovered an old ossuary there. It connected to the ruins of a monastery behind the hill, though part of the passage had collapsed years ago. We had no other choice.Luca broke through the thin bricks sealing the arch with the butt of his gun. I pulled away loose stones. The moment we opened a hole

News of Isabella's death spread across Palermo the next morning. The Moretti family announced that she had died from injuries sustained during her abduction. To preserve her dignity, the funeral would use a closed coffin. No one would be permitted to view the body.My sister was moved to a seaside house that did not appear in any Moretti record. At first, no one approved of the plan. Luca called it too dangerous. Dr. Rossi worried about her health. Marco feared what would happen if the lie was exposed. Isabella listened to them argue and made the decision herself."They truly meant to kill me." She set the threatening letter on the table. "If I disappear, they'll believe they succeeded. I'm willing to try."She cut her hair short, changed into ordinary clothes, and left the estate without looking back. In the past, she had followed every instruction Father gave. I had assumed obedience came naturally to her. Only now did I understand that she had never been offered another choice. The

That evening, I returned to the Vitale estate alone. I told no one, and I brought no Moretti guards.Antonia had hidden a recorder in my earring. Its signal transmitted to a receiver outside the estate. Even if Father found it, everything already recorded would remain in her hands. I only needed to make him talk. The main light in the study was off.Father stood by the window smoking a cigar. A photograph of me lay on his desk beside a completed marriage contract. The groom was Alessandro, Salvatore's only son."Sit," Father said.I remained standing."You had a second marriage contract ready all along.""The Vitales cannot afford to offend both Moretti bloodlines.""So Isabella marries Luca, and I marry his cousin. No matter which man becomes Don, you win."Father turned around."Everything I do is for the Vitale family.""Including drugging me?""I don't know what you're talking about.""You know I didn't drink it." I made myself smile. "Otherwise, you wouldn't have made that mistake
