The other end of the line went quiet for a moment. "Are you serious?"

I replied, "I am."

The man paused for a moment, seemingly deep in thought. "Alright."

"Shouldn't you think more about it before agreeing?" I asked.

He let out a soft laugh and asked in a low voice, "Will you regret it?"

I responded, "No regrets."

"Then, that's all that matters. Let me sign this contract first. I'll be back in three days," came his reply.

Just then, Gilbert Hughes returned from the garden. He asked with some curiosity, "What did you mean by 'no regrets' on the phone earlier?"

I smiled at him faintly. "It was a call with a friend. We were talking about some pre-wedding stuff. A lot of people say they feel a little regret before getting married."

Then, I paused for a moment and looked him straight in the eye. "What about you? Will you regret marrying me?"

He was momentarily caught off guard. His eyes darted away as he deliberately changed the subject. "How are the wedding preparations going?"

A sense of bitterness welled up in my heart.

Truthfully, I had tried countless times to discuss the details with Gilbert since the day he proposed.

Whenever I would excitedly mention anything about the wedding, he would smile gently and say, "You make the decisions as you're the star of the day."

I always thought it was because he truly loved me and wanted me to plan things however I wished.

It was only that night, when I accidentally overheard his conversation with his friends, that I was abruptly awakened to reality.

I finally realized that, to Gilbert, this wedding was nothing more than a performance he was putting on for my sake.

At that moment, he suddenly leaned in close, just like he always did, to kiss my forehead.

However, as he approached, I caught a whiff of a familiar freesia scent. That was Cheryl Manning's usual perfume.

The image of Gilbert kissing Cheryl under the night sky earlier flashed through my mind. Instinctively, I turned away from the kiss.

Gilbert froze for a second and asked, "What's wrong?"

"It's nothing," I replied softly. "I'm just tired."

He gently tried to reassure me. "You've been working too hard. Don't stress too much. Let someone take you home to rest, okay?"

I looked at him and asked, "Aren't you going home?"

He paused before he smiled, "I still need to keep company with my friends. But after the wedding, we'll have a happy future ahead."

Hearing his words, I sneered inwardly.

A happy future?

He never intended for us to have any kind of future together.

In the end, talking about things like our future, our marriage, and commitment was nothing more than sweet lies meant to placate me. They were meant to keep me playing along.

Those so-called excuses were just another veiled warning from Cheryl.

She was letting me know that Gilbert would always belong to her.

Gilbert stared at Cheryl coldly, not showing any shred of guilt. It was clear he had no intention of going after her.I glanced at him indifferently as I mocked, "She's the one you went to such lengths to win over. Aren't you going after her?"He shot me a look of rage and resentment, sneering. "What? Are you mocking me, too, now? I know you can't wait to see me fail. Jennifer, you—"I cut him off coolly as I met his eyes. "Gilbert, she did everything she could and stayed by your side just to win your heart. But you didn't value her at all."He was momentarily silenced by my words, and his expression stiffened. Still, he stubbornly insisted, "She'll come back eventually anyway."I shook my head slightly and sighed. I said helplessly, "That's your problem. You only start to regret things when it's too late. The world doesn't always offer second chances, though."Gilbert's expression darkened further as he glanced between me and Edward. He snapped through clenched teeth, "I don't n

"Mr. Edward has had multiple recent contacts with the Wells family, concerning…"Gilbert instantly paled. His eyes were filled with shock and fury as he shouted, "Edward, you've planted people around me this whole time? You've been scheming against me from the start!"Edward let out a cold chuckle and looked him straight in the eye. His voice was resolute as he replied, "I wasn't scheming against you. It was all to protect Jen. I had to make sure you wouldn't mistreat her."Gilbert was livid. His fists were clenched as he commented with a trembling voice, "So, all along…"Edward remained calm as he answered, "If you hadn't repeatedly crossed the line and even harbored thoughts you never should have had, I wouldn't have needed to take such measures."Gilbert sneered bitterly. He said with resentment, "Thoughts I shouldn't have had? You've always looked down on me!"He continued, "Since I was a child, you always thought you were better than me. You think I'm just leeching off the f

Gilbert looked at Cheryl with affection and replied softly, "Of course. When you love someone, you treat them well. Only those who are fake and insincere are stingy with their affection."His words were laced with mockery and clearly aimed at me.I took a deep breath and tried to keep calm. I wasn't interested in any conflicts with them. However, once I boarded the plane, I realized the Universe was playing a cruel joke on me. We were seated in the same row.Throughout the flight, Gilbert and Cheryl shamelessly flaunted their affection right in front of me. I endured it all until the plane finally landed. As soon as we disembarked, I hurried down the bridge. Just as I arrived at the terminal, I spotted someone waiting in the distance.Cheryl was the first to notice and excitedly tugged on Gilbert's arm. She asked smugly, "Gilbert, isn't that the Hughes family's butler? It looks like he came just to pick us up."Gilbert's lips curled into a pleased smile as he looked at me. "Jenn

Edward let out an embarrassed laugh and said softly, "You don't understand. This makes me feel secure. Now, I don't have to worry about you suddenly leaving."He read the marriage certificate happily, then took me to pick out our rings. He was meticulous, carefully considering each one as if it were the most important choice in the world. After we picked a ring, he looked at me with anticipation. "Jen, we still need to pick out a new wedding dress. I want to give you a proper wedding—one with no regrets."I was moved by his sincerity and chuckled slightly. "We've already registered our marriage and held a wedding. Why are you still fussing over it?"Edward replied firmly, "No, that one didn't count. I want a real wedding, one that's truly ours."I sighed softly and relented, "Alright, but give me a little time first. I'm honestly a bit tired right now."…Just as I sat down after returning home, my phone rang. It was Gilbert who spoke frantically and angrily, "Jennifer, what the

My parents nodded in relief and joy, then they pulled me aside and whispered, "He's a good one, Jen. Why haven't you brought him home all this time? Why did you hide him?"A faint ache could be felt in my chest as my thoughts drifted back to the past eight years. At the time, I had asked Gilbert to visit my parents countless times, but he would come up with some excuse to avoid it each time.I used to think it was because he was busy with work, or maybe he just wasn't ready yet.Only now did I understand that he never saw me as real family. He had never planned to spend a lifetime with me.Edward noticed my silence and explained softly, "This was my fault. I always felt I wasn't good enough for Jen. That's why I hesitated for so long."The ceremony began. We walked onto the stage, and the moment he leaned in to kiss the bride, he dipped his head and kissed me softly. Yet, he subtly missed my lips by a breath.I looked up at him with a puzzled expression. He leaned in and whisper

A flicker of shock and anger flashed through Gilbert's eyes.He stared at me. Then, he suddenly realized something and mocked, "So, this is your revenge? All this just because I tried to make you apologize to Cheryl? Fine, I'm here now. Are you happy now?"I looked at him indifferently. Just as I was about to respond, Edward stepped to my side and commented sharply, "Watch your mouth, Gilbert."Gilbert looked at Edward in disdain, mocking, "Don't you think you can order me around just because you're my uncle. I'm warning you…"A cold laugh from me cut him off abruptly. "Gilbert, I've already said it. Today's wedding has nothing to do with you. You're the one who's out of place."Gilbert's expression stiffened, and disbelief flickered in his eyes. It was as if he couldn't accept that I was speaking to him like that. "What are you saying, Jennifer? Don't you love me? Are you screwing with me?"I laughed bitterly. "What about you? Gilbert, were you ever serious about me?"My words
