LOGINRichard Hale stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his penthouse office, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a glass of untouched whiskey. The city stretched beneath him in clean lines of light, orderly and obedient, the way he preferred everything in his life.
His phone vibrated once against the desk but he ignored it. A second later, it vibrated again forcing him to pick it up with a faint frown. There was no name, no number….Only a single message.
You Don’t Remember Me Yet, But She Does.
Richard stared at the screen lost as the corner of his mouth twitched, more irritated than concerned. He typed a short reply…WHO IS THIS?
The response came almost immediately..
Ask your father what he did to the Loneria family.
Then ask yourself why Lisa no longer looks at you the same way.
Richard’s fingers tightened around the phone, he read the message twice…then a third time. A slow, cold sensation moved down his spine, not fear exactly, but something close to recognition he couldn’t place. He locked the phone and set it face down on the desk, his jaw tightening.
The door to his office opened slowly as Claire stepped inside, elegant as always with a soft smile on her lips. “You’re still here? I thought we were leaving for dinner.”
Richard didn’t turn around immediately, he kept his eyes on the city view from his window. Claire’s heels clicked softly against the floor as she approached then she stopped close behind him, close enough for her perfume to reach him, and rested her fingers lightly on his arm.
“You’ve been tensed all day,” she murmured, her voice lowering into something intimate. “I can feel it.”
Her hand slid slowly up his sleeve, then across his chest, She stepped around to face him, tilting her chin up, eyes half-lidded in a way she knew will definitely work on him.
“Skip dinner,” she whispered. “Stay here with me.”
Her fingers trailed deliberately down the front of his shirt, pausing just above his belt. She leaned in, her body nearly brushing his, lips parted with clear invitation.
For a brief moment, Richard allowed the contact, then his hand closed around her wrist…not roughly, but firmly enough to stop her showing no interest.
“Did you send someone to deliver a message to me?” he asked.
Claire’s seductive expression faltered. “What?” He finally looked at her fully with calm eyes but sharper than usual.
“A message,” he repeated. “One that mentions Lisa… and my father.”
Claire’s smile didn’t disappear, but something careful moved behind it. “That’s strange, I haven’t spoken to anyone about either of them today.”
Richard studied her face for a moment longer than necessary. In his mind, an image of Lisa surfaced….. the distant way she had looked at him recently, the absence of the soft admiration she used to carry, something about that realization left a bitter taste as disgust flickered across his features before he masked it.
He released Claire’s wrist and stepped past her. “Find out who has access to this floor,” he said quietly. “And double the security around Lisa.”
Claire turned, her tone tightening. “Around Lisa? Why?”
Richard set his glass down on the desk.
“isnt she your best friend? someone out there thinks they know something I don’t.” His voice dropped. “And I don’t like being the last to know.”
Claire watched him, the rejection still hanging between them, she opened her mouth to speak again, but Richard’s phone lit up once more.
This time it was a call from his assistant, he answered with a clipped, “Speak.”
The color in his face changed as he listened, Lisa’s mother had been in an accident and She had been rushed to the hospital. Richard ended the call without another word, already reaching for his coat.
“We’re going to the hospital,” he said. Claire followed quickly. “What happened?” He didn’t answer.
By the time they arrived, the private wing was already controlled and quiet. Richard hurriedly stepped out of the car with so much confidence especially not when Hale Pharmaceuticals had always been the first call in situations like this. But that confidence cracked the moment he reached the entrance of the wing when a senior member of staff blocked his path.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Hale. Access is restricted.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed. “Restricted?” he looked around probably thinking he was referring to Claire or someone else…
“Claire just wait outside, I'll be ba..”
“Yes, sir. Mr Hale, Miss Loneria gave clear instructions that No personnel affiliated with Hale Pharmaceuticals are to be involved in her mother’s care.”
The hallway went still, Claire glanced at him, surprised…trying to shoot her shot out of shame. “Look, I'm her best friend...”
“You can wait outside with Mr Hale, you both came together.” he cut her off the delusion.
Richard stared at the staff member, the weight of the refusal settling over him like a public slap, for the first time in a long while, his name had not opened a door.
His hand curled into a fist.. “Call her,” he said coldly. “She already anticipated that request, sir,” the man replied. “Her answer was the same.”
For a moment, Richard said nothing, then he turned slightly, eyes hard, the anonymous message from earlier echoing in his mind with new force.
Outsiders watched in disbelief , no one was bold enough to question the situation as they mummured in disbelief.
“ The HALE'S are now restricted from the LONERIA's property, what a shame!!”
“I actually thought they were family friends.”
“The LONERIA heiress is the young heir’s girlfriend, why would she reject him like that in public after everything he'd done for her”. The gossip flew around him with broad wings, this is more than a public humiliation…slowly he walked back to his car as Claire tailed behind but he sped off angrily before she caught up with him.
“What the fuckkkk!!... Lisa has clearly disgraced me today. ” Claire yelled loudly.
The scene replayed in his head as he drove. Lisa was no longer looking at him the same way. Yeah.. and now, she was no longer allowing him near her family either.
Now, this is a big confirmation of things falling apart.
Four weeks later my mother was discharged. The estate felt different with her back in it, quieter in some ways, heavier in others. I had spent the morning reviewing the limited reports the temporary administrator still allowed me to see when the staff announced an unscheduled visitor.Richard’s father. …What a Wow!!I reached the main sitting room just as he was being shown in. My mother sat on the long sofa, still careful with her movements. He greeted her with polished warmth, but his eyes did not stay on her. They moved across the room, the doorways, the visible hall beyond, lingering a second too long on the spaces that led deeper into the house, measuring, assessing, like a man already deciding what could be taken.I stepped fully into the room.“Looking for something?” I asked. He turned, smile already in place. “Lisa. You’ve grown sharper since we last spoke.”“And you’ve grown bolder, walking through my house like you’re measuring it.”My mother’s voice cut in quickly, low and
Lisa walked into the Loneria private lounge at exactly 7:00 p.m. wearing a simple cream dress and a calm expression that cost her more effort than she wanted to admit, and Richard was already there, standing the moment she entered with surprise flickering across his face before he controlled it.“You asked to meet,” he said.“I did.” She sat without waiting for an invitation. “We need to talk about the court order.”Richard remained standing a second longer before taking the seat across from her, the table between them feeling wider than it should have.“I’ve already spoken to my father,” he said. “He’s not willing to withdraw the filing.”“I know.” Lisa kept her voice even. “That’s not why I’m here.”He watched her carefully. “Then why?”“Because fighting him head-on right now will only make the restrictions tighter. I need the company stable until I’m fully free of the order, that means fewer public clashes, that means you stop looking like the enemy in every room we share.”Richard
Adrian sat alone in the upper room of the Croft archive with two thin folders open under the low light, the paper edges already soft from how many times he had turned them, and the deeper he read the colder the picture became because both documents carried the same quiet poison, one set of signatures belonging to Lisa’s late father and the other belonging to Richard’s father, each page requiring the second man’s confirmation before certain private holdings and overseas transfers could be touched, and if either side discovered that these papers still existed the entire quiet path he had been building would collapse, so hacking was out of the question for now since any digital trace would light up every alarm the Hales still controlled. He closed the folders slowly and leaned back, jaw tight, already calculating slower routes that would not wake the wrong people. Across the city Lisa stood in front of her mirror with the court order still locked in her desk drawer and the silence from
Now, we both have our common enemies clear as crystal. “It's late Lisa, come spend a night at my place before your lurking enemies get you kidnapped on your way back.” “Huh” I stared at him in disbelief. “Spend a night at your place? You're so ridiculous.” I grabbed my purse, ready to walk out on him. “Hey hey hey little Lioness, hold up lets rub minds together.” Adrian cleared his throat softly, his arrogance and habit of always being right and smart is already getting on my last nerves but I need his alliance. “To get all you want done peacefully…you have to embrace Richard and treat him like you care.” Tsk. I hissed bluntly, I don't care about his feelings anymore, I refuse to be his puppet….”“Cut that crap right now Lisa, love rules above all. Yeah I know and we've seen that he's going to hurt you but we have to prevent it with Wisdom so he won't ally with his father and bring you down which will slow down our work.” “Makes sense.” my face twitched slightly again. “I'll t
OUTSMART THE Smartest The call ended up pissing me off the most as I sat on the edge of the bed with the phone still in my hand ... .My jaw was tight, my bandaged fingers pressed hard into the sheets, pressure from my anger won't let the glasscut heal. Adrian’s last words were still in my ear…“Change of plan. Meet me at the main restaurant instead. I will be late, Something urgent came up.”Then the line went dead.I stared at my phone…. Main restaurant, a public place that's always busy even at night. Not the old Croft building, my shoulders were already stiff with anger, and the sudden change only made it worse. I did not understand why he would switch locations at the last second. I only knew I needed to see him.I stood up too fast as the chair scraped against the floor. I pulled on a dark coat, shoved the phone into my pocket, and left my room without looking back. The hallway quietly complimented my swift movement, a maid stepped aside when she saw my face and did not ask wher
The summons came without warning. It arrived on heavy cream paper with the official seal of the city’s corporate and family court. A quiet clerk delivered it, she refused to answer questions, and left at once. I read the document in the study and byy the time I finished, my ears were ringing. The paper said that because I was still a minor and had shown recent erratic behavior, public confrontations, and decisions made without adult oversight, I was temporarily restricted from running Loneria International Medical Center and all related holdings until I turned eighteen. The order had been filed under emergency protective rules.I read it twice, then a third time... The words did not feel real. When I finally put the paper down, my hands stayed steady only because I forced them to.Within the hour the board was told, within two hours some of the internal system locks began to change. By late afternoon a temporary administrator arrived with two silent aides. He spoke with cold polite
