Chapter 2 A Mother's Vengeance

Author: The Sunken Official
The date of the trial was drawing closer.

"Alright. Tell Nikolai to come back. I'll apologize."

Nikolai returned to the family estate that evening. The lingering scent of women's perfume clung to him, while hickeys lined the left side of his neck and shoulder. As a woman myself, I knew exactly what Daphne was trying to convey.

It was a deliberate display, a way of flaunting her victory.

"Anthea, you'll always be my wife no matter what. My men will always recognize you as their ma'am." Nikolai pulled me tightly into his arms, burying his nose in the crook of my neck and breathing in my scent.

"Is that so?" I pretended to be docile and pushed Nikolai onto the bed. "Wait here. I have a surprise for you."

I left the room, locked the door from the outside with a heavy iron lock, and quickly drove straight to a law firm. There, I received the exact same refusal I'd been hearing everywhere else.

"Mrs. Edevane, Mr. Edevane has already given us his instructions. If I take your case, my entire family will be dragged into the river and drowned."

And so, I contacted lawyers overseas instead.

The sound of high heels approached from behind. When I looked up, I saw Daphne in a white dress, accompanied by several Edevane family bodyguards.

"Anthea, how did you manage to make such a mess of yourself? Nikolai has already signed the settlement agreement. I saved his life. Do you really think all this struggling is going to accomplish anything?"

I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms.

Three years earlier, Nikolai had been ambushed by remnants of the Astral Society and shot into unconsciousness. I had led my people straight into a hail of bullets and taken three shots myself to get him out alive.

By then, I was too badly injured to escape, so I had no choice but to entrust Daphne with getting Nikolai to safety.

I had never imagined that Daphne would steal the credit for saving him. I certainly had never expected Nikolai to send our twins and me down a road to ruin because of it.

"I told you. I will avenge my sons!"

I abruptly drew the dagger I had concealed up my sleeve. The Edevane bodyguards rushing toward me barely had time to react before I swiftly slashed their throats. Then, I drove the blade straight toward Daphne's heart.

A gunshot rang out with a loud bang. The bullet tore straight through my lower abdomen.

Nikolai strode toward me and shielded Daphne behind him. "Anthea, I taught you everything you know. Did you really think you could fool me?"

Daphne clutched the edge of Nikolai's shirt and began to sob pitifully. "Nikolai, please don't hurt Anthea. This was all my fault. I can apologize to her on my knees. I'm willing to give her my life if that's what she wants."

"Don't bother. Those who refuse to obey deserve to be punished."

On the eve of the trial, public opinion online suddenly turned against us while I was holding a funeral for my sons. Over the course of a single night, every piece of evidence related to the accident was destroyed.

What had clearly been a deliberate hit-and-run was rewritten as an ordinary accident in which the chauffeur was supposedly blameless.

"This poor chauffeur. He just happened to run into two spoiled, badly behaved kids."

"The kids could claim ignorance, but what's the parents' excuse? They couldn't even keep an eye on their sons, and now they're suing the chauffeur? They really have no shame!"

"I heard the children's father already signed a settlement agreement, but the mother still refuses to let it go. I bet she's just trying to extort money!"

"Children turn out the way their mothers raise them. If you ask me, those two brats deserved to die!"

The internet was flooded with vicious insults.

An angry mob of netizens stormed the funeral hall, smashing everything in sight. They even carved the most vile and degrading words imaginable into my twins' memorial tablets.

I desperately shielded my sons' urns with my body, but there was only so much one person could withstand against a crowd.

The gunshot wound in my lower abdomen tore open again, and blood seeped through the bandages.

I let out a mocking laugh as I watched the two of them, who were apparently about to reconcile. "Disgusting.""It is pretty disgusting. So, let's make things a little more interesting."Lucian clapped his hands. The black-clad bodyguards immediately drew their guns and aimed them at Nikolai and Daphne."Lucian, what are you trying to do?"Lucian casually tossed a dagger onto the floor. His eyes lowered as a playful smile tugged at his lips. "I came here today to avenge my wife. Between the two of you, only one gets to live."The guests in the banquet hall had long since scattered in every direction at this point.Nikolai stared coldly at Lucian and me. "Anthea, is this why you called him here? What exactly are you trying to do?""You're asking me what I want to do?" I let out a bitter laugh. My heart ached for my boys and my mother. "Nikolai, you protected the person who killed our sons, and then you caused my mother's death. And now you're asking me what I want to do? I want re

The guests began whispering among themselves.Nikolai's expression darkened as soon as he saw Lucian. "Lucian, what are you doing here?""I came to take my future Mrs. Atwater home," Lucian replied, walking over to me with a warm smile on his lips.Lucian and I hadn't seen each other since I got married to Nikolai. Yet, I couldn't help but notice that he looked exactly the same as he did all those years ago. "Mrs. Atwater?" Nikolai's brows drew tightly together as his gaze immediately snapped toward me.I didn't deny Lucian's claim that I was Mrs. Atwater. I simply smiled. "Why, Mr. Atwater, you're here much earlier than I expected.""I applied for a private flight corridor," Lucian drawled casually, a hint of teasing in his voice. "After all, I already missed my chance once. My parents have been pressuring me to get married for years. I figured I'd better hurry up and bring my Mrs. Atwater home, don't you think?"Nikolai turned grimmer upon hearing our casual conversation. "Lu

The men around us immediately went on high alert, cocking their guns and aiming them at me.The wedding venue instantly became a powder keg.Just then, one of the men hurried in through the doors, his voice urgent. "Boss, the police are here!"Everyone immediately lowered their weapons.A group of police officers entered the wedding venue. "We're here on police business. Where is Morgan Remington?"Morgan had been accepting toasts from the guests when he heard the officers. Confused, he instinctively moved behind Nikolai. "Nikolai, what's going on? Don't tell me this has something to do with the car accident…""Morgan, don't worry. We've already cleaned up all the evidence from the accident."Nikolai stood confidently in front of Morgan and Daphne, as though he had already become the Remington family's son-in-law. "Officer, I'm Nikolai Edevane. What case is this regarding?""You're the father of the deceased, aren't you?" The officer sized Nikolai up and down before producing a

I stared at the sunlight outside the window, still somewhat dazed. The phone number had come from Lucian Atwater, Nikolai's sworn enemy. He had passed that phone to me on the day of my wedding. He had told me that he would always have my back no matter what happened in the future. At the time, I had been over the moon that I was marrying Nikolai. So, I tucked the phone away in the safe, treating his words as an empty courtesy, and never thought about it again. It had been so many years since that conversation, so I didn't really expect anyone to answer. I honestly never imagined that Lucian would still pick up the moment I called."Anthea, I'll be back in the country this afternoon. Leave everything to me."…After that, I drove myself to the wedding venue where Nikolai and Daphne were holding their ceremony.Lucian was merely the contingency plan I had left for myself. The revenge for my twins and my mother was something I wanted to personally carry out.The wedding venue was

Daphne's father walked over with a protruding beer belly and a look of utter disdain. Then, he casually tossed a thick stack of cash into my face. "Nikolai already bought me a new car. I couldn't care less about this measly compensation. Take it and use it to buy those two little bastards sturdier urns."The moment I saw the man who had killed my sons, I could no longer suppress the rage boiling inside me. The dagger slipped from my sleeve into my palm."Anthea, what do you think you're doing? Apologize to Morgan right now.""Nikolai, he killed our sons!""You're being disobedient again." Nikolai's voice carried a clear threat. My eyes swung to the video playing on his phone. Edevane family bodyguards stormed into my mother's hospital room and forcibly ripped out her oxygen tube."No!""Get down on your knees and apologize.""Alright. I'll kneel…"My knees went down before Daphne and her father and slammed my forehead against the floor as I apologized. "I'm sorry. I failed to

My sons' urns were snatched away and smashed to pieces. Their ashes scattered across the ground, trampled beneath countless feet until all that remained were shoeprints of various sizes.Meanwhile, the Edevane family bodyguards watched the entire thing without lifting a finger. They had received Nikolai's orders long ago. So, they simply stood by, coldly watching me struggle alone in utter humiliation.A gust of wind swept through. The ashes were carried into the air, and the final traces my sons had left behind in this world vanished completely.I collapsed helplessly onto the ground. The day my boys died had been Nikolai's birthday, and they had been on their way to buy him a present when the accident happened."It's Daddy's birthday today.
