Chapter 4

Author: Triple Threat
Dad asked, "When will you and Tina be ready to leave? I'll arrange for someone to pick you up."

I looked at the newly printed divorce agreement in my hand and answered in a soft tone, "Tomorrow. Dr. Quentin said that Tina's condition is quite stable and well, and… I don't really want her to continue staying here anymore."

Dad sighed. "Alright. We'll do as you say. I should never have made you marry Xavier back then. We will cut off all ties with the Galvans moving on."

That afternoon, Tina was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward.

I told her about our plans for leaving. At first, I thought that she would be reluctant to leave. I was also prepared to convince her to leave if she made a big fuss about it.

However, after telling her about it, Tina was just quiet for a short while before saying, "I want to call him."

She was referring to Xavier.

I looked at her tear-filled eyes and dialed his number without hesitation. This time, he picked up fairly quickly.

"Heather? Why is Tina's bedroom locked? The guest room is in too much of a sorry sight, so I'm planning to let Ian live in her room for now. Tell me where the keys are at."

Xavier's urgent voice was immediately heard from the other side of the line, not knowing that this would be his final phone call with Tina and me before we left.

I didn't tell him about it either.

I just saw Tina's trembling hands and held them, unable to hold back.

"Daddy…"

She couldn't help calling out to him quietly, her emotions raw as her tears dripped steadily onto the blankets.

"Can you come see me at the hospital tonight, just for once?"

Xavier was taken aback when he heard her voice. His tone softened at once.

"What are you doing with Mommy's phone, Tina? Where's Mommy? Is she next to you? Be a good girl and give the phone back to Mommy, alright?"

I took the phone from Tina.

"Yes?"

Xavier said, "Where did you put the key to Tina's bedroom?"

I hesitated slightly. "On the study table."

"You don't mind if I lend Winter your new pajamas in the master bedroom, right?"

"Whatever."

"Also, Ian accidentally dropped the music box on the living room shelf. I'll buy another one to replace it tomorrow. Don't tell Tina about it."

I fell silent. Tina had already heard every single word he said.

That music box was Xavier's birthday gift to Tina when she was three years old. She had always treasured it very much and even went to sleep with it at night.

She was scared that she would break it if she brought it to the hospital with her this time, so she left it safely on the living room shelf. However, the first day Xavier brought someone else home, they'd already broken it.

"Are you still there, Heather?" Xavier asked, frowning. "Also, what did Tina say just now? I didn't hear her properly. Did she say she wanted me to come over tonight—"

"No!"

Tina suddenly grabbed my hand, shaking her head frantically with her eyes red.

My fingers tensed, and my breathing also quickened for a second. Ultimately, I smiled bitterly and said, "No, you heard her wrongly."

After hanging up, Tina couldn't hold back anymore and fell into my arms. I held her tightly, feeling my heart hurting for her.

I knew now that she was completely over Xavier.

So, I didn't drag on anymore and changed our plans to leave at the last minute.

I got Tina discharged by 5:00 pm that night and called Dad to pick us up. Approximately two hours later, a helicopter landed on the roof of the hospital.

Before getting into the helicopter, I handed Sherry the divorce agreement and said, "Please help me give this to him."

Sherry nodded and agreed, and I finally relaxed as I picked Tina up in my arms and headed straight for the helicopter without another backward glance.

Meanwhile, Xavier also entered the hospital parking lot at that very same moment. He'd been feeling rather restless and uneasy ever since hanging up.

"You didn't want us first," Tina said. The restaurant was pin-drop silent. It was so quiet that I could hear Xavier's rapid breathing. He seemed completely rooted to the floor by Tina's words, unable to move for a long time.Tina continued, "I used to want you around last time. I wanted you to come with me to preschool for Sports Day. I wanted you to tell me bedtime stories. I wanted you to hug me when I was sick."But you're always very busy. "I also wanted you to keep me company at the hospital because I was scared of the surgery. I thought you would come, but you left."She spoke very softly and slowly, but her words landed heavier than a blow to the face."So, I don't want you anymore. Mommy and I are fine on our own. Please don't disturb us again."Xavier's tears finally rolled down his cheeks. He crouched down, wanting to touch her, but Tina flinched and hid behind me. His hand ended up freezing mid-air."Tina, Daddy was wrong. Won't you give Daddy another chance? Pleas

Austin happened to have his day off too, so he tagged along with me and Tina.Tina liked him very much because he never treated her like a patient. He would listen to her attentively and tell her, "You're not a fragile doll made of glass. You just need to slow down a little for now."But once your body has fully recovered, you can run and jump like the other kids too."Tina's eyes sparkled brightly when she heard that. "Then, does that mean I can learn ballet next time?"Austin nodded. "Of course. But you must ask your mommy first, and then get confirmation from your doctor again."Tina immediately turned to look at me. "Mommy, I want to learn ballet!"I smiled and nodded. "I'll go with you to enroll in a class once you've fully recovered, okay?"Tina was so overjoyed that she nearly jumped in excitement, but Austin hurriedly held her down gently. "Be careful."She stuck her tongue out at him playfully. "I know, I know."At that moment, I realized this might be good enough f

Instead, I stood by the lake, watching the swans for a long time. Tina sat on the bench nearby with a hat on, scribbling away in her drawing book. She was recovering well, and some color had finally returned to her cheeks. When Austin came over for her follow-up, he crouched down and looked at her drawing."Is this your Mommy?"Tina nodded. "This is Mommy, and this is Grandpa, and this is Grandma.""What about this little puppy right here?"Tina answered seriously, "This is the puppy I want to have next time."Austin chuckled. "What about me, then?"After thinking for a while, Tina added a drawing of him in a big white coat. "You're right here, Austin."Austin smiled deeply, his eyes twinkling. I just stood right next to them, feeling my heart softening after what felt like a very long time.I only realized that life wasn't just about waiting and getting disappointed after I left Xavier. There was also the morning sunshine. Hot tea in the afternoon. Tina sleeping soundly at n

"Yes, you can," I said. "Haven't you been having a good time in the past seven days anyway? You ate out with Winter, celebrated her son's birthday with her, and even went gift shopping with her."You've been keeping yourself mighty busy without Tina or me."Xavier felt a lump in his throat.I continued, "Even if you refuse to sign the papers, the Shaws will find a way. Don't turn this into an ugly and messy affair, Xavier. And stop bothering Tina and me."Then, I turned and went back in. Just before the door closed, I heard him yelling out to me again."Heather Shaw!"It wasn't loud. In fact, it was soft and almost beseeching. He'd never sounded this desperate. However, I didn't look back even once. After all, his belated love meant nothing to me now.…Xavier didn't leave immediately afterward. He stood outside the villa for a long time in the cold Sweeland wind, and his face soon turned purple from the cold. But I never opened the door for him again.Tina poked her head out

The plane landed in Sweeland in the afternoon. Xavier used his family connections and managed to find the Shaw family villa here. When he arrived, he saw a young man coming out of the house. He was wearing a white coat, and he looked fairly handsome. There was a folder of medical records in his hands.I was seeing him to the door, speaking in a soft, gentle voice. "Thanks so much for your help today, Dr. Velez."He was the pediatric cardiologist Dad contacted, and his name was Austin Velez. He smiled and said, "It's my pleasure. Tina's recovering fine. She just needs to attend her follow-up sessions on time and avoid strenuous exercise. There shouldn't be any major problems after that."You know, she even asked me when she was finally allowed to feed the swans at the lake."I chuckled. "I guess she's been staying indoors for far too long."Austin looked at me and softened his tone. "You should take care of yourself too and rest well. You've lost a lot of weight recently."I was

"I escaped back with Ian without any money on me. I thought that you'd save me. You promised me that you would never abandon me," Winter cried.Xavier carefully withdrew his arm and said, "I can help you, but not at the expense of hurting my wife and my daughter."Winter's tears fell. "Your wife? It's not like you love her anyway. You only married her back then because she reminded you of me, didn't she?"Xavier's face turned black. "Heather is nothing like you."Winter froze.Xavier stared at her and made his words clear for the first time."Heather was never anything like you. I just didn't want to admit it. That's all."Winter felt as though she was stabbed in the chest. Her voice turned shrill as it went up by an octave."Then what have you been taking me for? Why have you been treating me so well for the past few days? And why did you tell Ian to call you 'Daddy'?"Xavier closed his eyes. "You can call me a bastard. But this is where everything ends."Winter laughed. She
