Chapter 2

Autor: Snail
The bodyguards finally rushed over and closed in around Matteo and Vera, protecting them. The thugs shrank back in fear, and the onlookers stumbled a few steps away in a panic.

I was dazed. Someone bumped into me, and I went down hard. A sharp, searing pain shot through my knees and elbows.

The thugs were driven off to the side, but they still had the nerve to shout, "That woman owes us money! No matter who you are, you can't stop us from collecting our debt!"

Without missing a beat, Matteo snapped back, "How much does she owe you? I'll settle it for her. Now, get the hell out of here!"

Then, he scooped Vera into his arms and walked off with her. The car door slammed shut with a heavy thud that landed right on my heart. He left me there as if I were just some irrelevant stranger.

The crowd slowly dispersed until I was the only idiot still sitting on the sidewalk. I had no idea how long I stayed like that before I finally forced myself to my feet, my whole body trembling.

My palms were swollen and bleeding; every tiny movement sent a spike of pain shooting through them. However, the ache in my body couldn't drown out the hurt in my chest.

"This is enough," I whispered to myself.

Step by step, I dragged myself away. When I passed a trash can, I pulled the wedding band off my finger and tossed it in without hesitation. The ten-carat diamond ring hit the bottom of the bin with a clear, crisp clink, like it was bidding me farewell.

Everything was over. Nothing could salvage this relationship.

I sat on a cold, hard bench in the ER, my face drained of color. Across from me, outside the VIP area, a crowd had gathered. The people whispered among themselves.

"They say that Don Costa's people are in there."

"It's probably the Donna. He's so worked up over her when she isn't even injured. He made the hospital call in every doctor to check her over."

"Classic hero-saves-damsel moment. Didn't you see the gash on his head? That cut was huge, yet he didn't even make a sound!"

My feet carried me almost against my will to a stop outside the VIP area. My eyes went straight to Matteo, who lay on a hospital bed. Thick layers of gauze were wrapped around his head as he spoke gently, comforting Vera, who was sobbing.

"I'm fine. The doctor has already patched me up. I'm more worried about you, you know. You have to cooperate with the doctors for your exam later, okay?"

Vera hiccuped through her tears, her eyes as red as a rabbit's. "You wouldn't have gotten hurt if you hadn't tried to protect me…"

She shook all over, her voice soft and fragile. She looked absolutely pitiful.

Matteo's mother, Patrizia Morelli, sat by the bed. Her eyes were red-rimmed as she said to Vera, "Back then, after your father left you with all that debt, you chose to go overseas and work yourself to the bone to pay it off instead of telling us.

"That kind of money is nothing to Matteo. Why didn't you come to us for help? If we hadn't happened to see you being chased down for money, how much longer were you planning to keep this from us?"

Matteo's father, Giovanni Costa, sighed. "Exactly. If you hadn't suddenly left the country, Matteo never would've married that useless woman."

Vera said gratefully, "I really don't know what I would've done, if not for your help. Still, Alessia is Matteo's wife. If she finds out he got hurt because of me, she's going to hate me."

Matteo sighed heavily. "This isn't your fault, Vera."

Patrizia hurried to comfort her, too. "Matteo chose to save you. He made that decision. You can't blame yourself for that."

I stood at the doorway, watching them quietly, huddled together like one big happy family.

Throughout four years of marriage, I'd taken care of every part of Matteo's daily life without a single complaint. His stomach was weak, so I got up at the crack of dawn every day to make him mild and nutritious meals.

I'd always known that Giovanni and Patrizia didn't like me, but I'd never once complained to Matteo about it. Even when they treated me with cold indifference, I kept a smile on my face.

Now, I finally knew the reason behind their attitudes—Vera was the daughter-in-law they approved of.

Four years of holding on suddenly looked ridiculous in the face of the truth.

The realization made something that was strung tight within me snap. This mismatched marriage of ours… It was time to end it.

After dealing with Vera, Matteo went crazy looking for me. He dug through every lead he could find, but he still couldn't track down a single trace of me.He lived in regret every single day, restless and on edge. My face haunted his mind. He swore that if he could ever find me again, he would make up for everything and win me back, no matter the cost.Naturally, I wasn't going to let him find me that easily. After leaving Nevoli, I moved to a quiet little seaside town and started a new life that belonged only to me.Those first days were rough. In the four years I was married to Matteo, my whole world had revolved around him. I was completely cut off from the outside world.I had no work experience and had to learn everything from scratch, but I pushed through it. Later, I found a job as a waitress in a small restaurant.I suggested to the owner that we add different kinds of nutritious meals to the menu every day—something warm and easy on the stomach.I didn't expect it to ta

Vera snapped at Roberto, her voice full of impatience and irritation. "Dad, didn't I tell you not to come to the estate to look for me? If Matteo finds out about this, he'll definitely have me thrown out. Do you want to ruin everything for me?"Roberto just waved a hand dismissively and lowered his voice. "What are you afraid of? I only came in after making sure Matteo was far away."Then, he stared at her, his eyes full of hope as he pressed, "So, when are you finally going to become the lady of this household?"Vera rolled her eyes. "What's the rush? Alessia is already divorced from him. I'm completely confident I'll become his Donna and the woman of this house."She paused, a hint of regret crossing her face. "I was seriously out of my mind back then, looking down on Matteo. Look at him now—he's powerful, influential, and loaded. He's way more reliable than those rich guys I used to mooch off. I'm not letting my chance with him slip away again this time."Roberto couldn't help

Matteo stood in the middle of the living room, his expression terrifyingly cold. He said firmly, "You can't stay in my house anymore. Pack your things and leave. Now."He didn't care what Vera thought. The moment he remembered how she had made him ignore and hurt me, he wanted nothing more to do with her.Panic flashed across Vera's face. She grabbed his sleeve with both hands, shaking as she cried and begged, "Matteo, please don't kick me out! I'm begging you! If you throw me out, those loan sharks will kill me!""I'll pay them back for you." Matteo shook her hands off without hesitation, his voice edged with urgency. "I have to leave right now to look for Alessia. She's probably just in a bad mood and went to Havea to clear her head."As he spoke, there was a kind of stubborn certainty in his eyes. He refused to accept that I'd left him. "When I bring her back from our vacation, I don't ever want to see you in our home again."He didn't give Vera another chance to speak. He orde

Matteo rushed home, eaten up with guilt. He could only think of apologizing to me. He was ready to take all of my anger and my tears; he swore he would never be as cold and perfunctory as before. When he reached the estate, he found the living room to be unnervingly quiet. His heart leaped to his throat, and he hurried upstairs to the bedroom. He pushed the door open, then froze. All my clothes and personal things were gone. Every trace of me was wiped clean, as if I'd never lived there at all."Alessia? Alessia Russo!" he shouted.Panic hit him. He shouted my name at the top of his lungs, but only silence answered him. He bolted downstairs and grabbed a maid, his voice shaking. "Where's Alessia? Where did she go?"The maid was frightened by the way he looked and stammered, "T-The Donna… She left with a suitcase in hand. She didn't say where she was going."Matteo's legs went weak. He almost collapsed then and there. He fumbled for his phone and dialed my number again, but all he

Matteo stood alone in the hospital corridor, his mind a tangled mess. Vera's sudden confession had completely blindsided him. For a moment, he didn't know how to react. He knew very well that he was a married man. Vera shouldn't have developed feelings for him.The more he thought about it, the more he blamed himself. He figured he must have spent too much time with her lately and gotten too close, leading her to misunderstand and think he felt something more.Only now did he realize how badly he'd been neglecting me. Since Vera's return to the country, his whole life had revolved around her."No wonder Alessia was so furious about the ring," he thought to himself. "She must've been jealous."The thought hit him hard. He suddenly remembered how he'd promised to come with me to the hospital to see Mom a few days ago. Because of Vera, he'd broken that promise again and again. The more he thought about it, the heavier the guilt that weighed on his chest. He couldn't think about anyt

Matteo drove in a panic, anger simmering in his chest. "Alessia is getting more and more unreasonable. She loses it over the smallest things and won't be satisfied until you're hurt!"Vera drew in a quiet breath and put on a fragile expression, gently trying to calm him down. "Matteo, don't be mad, and don't blame Donna Russo. This happened because I was careless. It has nothing to do with her.""How can you say that? She did this on purpose!"Matteo stepped harder on the gas pedal, then glanced over at Vera's hand. His tone softened instantly. "Does it hurt? Hang in there. We're almost at the hospital. I can't let anything happen to your hand."She blinked innocently. "It's just a small cut. We don't need to go to the hospital. Don't make such a big deal out of it.""No way." He cut her off immediately, his voice turning serious. "You're going to be a top jewelry designer someday. You can't afford even the tiniest injury to your hands. It has to be treated properly."She lowered
