Chapter 3

Autor: Snail
I spent the whole day outside, only heading home after I finally calmed down. When I pushed open the door, I was greeted by cheery, lively laughter.

The foyer was piled high with a stranger's things, and the maids hustled back and forth, carrying boxes upstairs.

Vera lounged on the couch, wrapped in a cashmere shawl, a mug of warm milk in her hands. She tilted her head toward Matteo and said something I couldn't quite hear. Her eyes crinkled as she laughed.

They looked so perfectly in sync as they leaned in together like that.

Vera was the first to notice me. She set the mug down in a hurry and stood, giving me a small, nervous wave. "Alessia, I'm so sorry. Matteo got hurt because of me. Please don't be mad at him. It's all my fault!"

Her voice shook like it had taken everything she had just to say that.

Matteo stepped forward, almost casually placing himself between us and shielding her. "Alessia, this isn't her fault. Those loan sharks are vicious. If I hadn't stepped in, something bad would've happened to her… She's going to stay with us for a while. Until I'm sure her debts are all cleared, I can't let her live out there alone.

"Don't overthink this. I'm just helping out a friend." He watched me closely, like he was afraid I would suddenly fly into a rage and hurt his precious childhood sweetheart.

But I only nodded calmly and said, "Okay."

His brows snapped together. My unexpected composure clearly threw him off.

I didn't look at him again. I turned and walked straight to our bedroom. I had to pack all my things by that night. I'd already booked a flight out of Nevoli for the next day. I would take my luggage and leave for good.

Halfway through packing, the door opened, and Matteo walked in. When he saw the mess spread across the bed, he frowned again. "What are you doing?"

I didn't so much as falter. I just said half-heartedly, "There's too much stuff. I'm clearing some of it out."

His expression relaxed a little. He stepped forward and pulled me into his arms. "Once I've dealt with Vera's situation, I'll take you to Havea for a vacation."

My hands froze mid-movement as memories surfaced. I remembered all the times I'd begged him to go to Havea with me. He'd turned me down each time without a second thought.

"The family business doesn't allow me to go that far. I don't have time to go with you."

But now, Havea had suddenly become some sort of compensation because of Vera. I didn't feel happy at all.

He didn't notice my silence. He just kept making plans on his own.

The door opened again. Vera walked in while holding up a necklace, her eyes sparkling as she said, "Matteo, this is a necklace I designed myself. Come see if you think it could win something!"

Matteo immediately let go of me and walked over to her, smiling. "Of course it can. You've really got a talent for design. I'm sure the judges will love it."

Vera dreamed of being a designer and was always entering one competition or another. But to me, her designs were painfully generic, even downright awful. Only Matteo could love something that terrible.

"Donna Russo, what do you think? Isn't my design pretty?" Vera lifted the necklace proudly, insisting that I give her my opinion.

"She doesn't know anything about art. Don't bother asking her." Matteo cut in, the warning clear in his eyes. He was afraid I would say something that might upset her.

I forced myself to swallow the hurt. I was leaving tomorrow; none of this mattered anymore.

But then my gaze fell on the necklace pendant, and my eyes widened. I snatched the necklace out of her hand. The pendant was a beautiful emerald, but it was clear that it had been pried out of its ring setting by force.

I recognized it instantly. It was from Mom's favorite ring.

"Who said you could mess with my stuff?" My eyes burned red as anger crashed over me like a wave.

Vera cried out. Blood welled from her finger and started to drip.

Matteo shoved me hard to the floor and grabbed her injured hand, fury blazing in his eyes. "If you didn't like it, you could've just said so. There was no need to cut Vera's hand like that!"

The impact knocked the wind out of me. My organs felt like they'd all been shaken out of place. I gritted my teeth through the pain and forced out, "She destroyed my mother's keepsake. It's the only thing Mom left me!"

"That's enough. Your mom's still in the hospital; I'll just have her buy you something else. Stop acting crazy!"

It was such a casual statement, but it landed like a hammer blow to my chest. I didn't have a mother anymore. She was never going to buy me anything ever again.

Even after Matteo rushed Vera to the hospital, I couldn't pull myself out of the grief and rage choking me. I didn't even want to wait for my last day here to come.

This time, I was going to set Matteo free—and set myself free too. I would make sure we never saw each other again.

I changed my plane ticket to the earliest flight possible. Then, I wiped every trace of myself from the house, dragged my suitcase out of the estate, and walked away.

I called to confirm that the divorce decree had been processed and asked them to mail our copies to us separately.

After hanging up, I smiled for the first time in a long while. "Enjoy the single life, Matteo. I'm handing you over to your childhood sweetheart now."

In the four years I was married to Matteo, my whole world had revolved around him. I was completely cut off from the outside world.I had no work experience and had to learn everything from scratch, but I pushed through it. Later, I found a job as a waitress in a small restaurant.I suggested to the owner that we add different kinds of nutritious meals to the menu every day—something warm and easy on the stomach.I didn't expect it to ta

Vera snapped at Roberto, her voice full of impatience and irritation. "Dad, didn't I tell you not to come to the estate to look for me? If Matteo finds out about this, he'll definitely have me thrown out. Do you want to ruin everything for me?"Roberto just waved a hand dismissively and lowered his voice. "What are you afraid of? I only came in after making sure Matteo was far away."Then, he stared at her, his eyes full of hope as he pressed, "So, when are you finally going to become the lady of this household?"Vera rolled her eyes. "What's the rush? Alessia is already divorced from him. I'm completely confident I'll become his Donna and the woman of this house."She paused, a hint of regret crossing her face. "I was seriously out of my mind back then, looking down on Matteo. Look at him now—he's powerful, influential, and loaded. He's way more reliable than those rich guys I used to mooch off. I'm not letting my chance with him slip away again this time."Roberto couldn't help

Matteo stood in the middle of the living room, his expression terrifyingly cold. He said firmly, "You can't stay in my house anymore. Pack your things and leave. Now."He didn't care what Vera thought. The moment he remembered how she had made him ignore and hurt me, he wanted nothing more to do with her.Panic flashed across Vera's face. She grabbed his sleeve with both hands, shaking as she cried and begged, "Matteo, please don't kick me out! I'm begging you! If you throw me out, those loan sharks will kill me!""I'll pay them back for you." Matteo shook her hands off without hesitation, his voice edged with urgency. "I have to leave right now to look for Alessia. She's probably just in a bad mood and went to Havea to clear her head."As he spoke, there was a kind of stubborn certainty in his eyes. He refused to accept that I'd left him. "When I bring her back from our vacation, I don't ever want to see you in our home again."He didn't give Vera another chance to speak. He orde

Matteo rushed home, eaten up with guilt. He could only think of apologizing to me. He was ready to take all of my anger and my tears; he swore he would never be as cold and perfunctory as before. When he reached the estate, he found the living room to be unnervingly quiet. His heart leaped to his throat, and he hurried upstairs to the bedroom. He pushed the door open, then froze. All my clothes and personal things were gone. Every trace of me was wiped clean, as if I'd never lived there at all."Alessia? Alessia Russo!" he shouted.Panic hit him. He shouted my name at the top of his lungs, but only silence answered him. He bolted downstairs and grabbed a maid, his voice shaking. "Where's Alessia? Where did she go?"The maid was frightened by the way he looked and stammered, "T-The Donna… She left with a suitcase in hand. She didn't say where she was going."Matteo's legs went weak. He almost collapsed then and there. He fumbled for his phone and dialed my number again, but all he

Matteo stood alone in the hospital corridor, his mind a tangled mess. Vera's sudden confession had completely blindsided him. For a moment, he didn't know how to react. He knew very well that he was a married man. Vera shouldn't have developed feelings for him.The more he thought about it, the more he blamed himself. He figured he must have spent too much time with her lately and gotten too close, leading her to misunderstand and think he felt something more.Only now did he realize how badly he'd been neglecting me. Since Vera's return to the country, his whole life had revolved around her."No wonder Alessia was so furious about the ring," he thought to himself. "She must've been jealous."The thought hit him hard. He suddenly remembered how he'd promised to come with me to the hospital to see Mom a few days ago. Because of Vera, he'd broken that promise again and again. The more he thought about it, the heavier the guilt that weighed on his chest. He couldn't think about anyt

Matteo drove in a panic, anger simmering in his chest. "Alessia is getting more and more unreasonable. She loses it over the smallest things and won't be satisfied until you're hurt!"Vera drew in a quiet breath and put on a fragile expression, gently trying to calm him down. "Matteo, don't be mad, and don't blame Donna Russo. This happened because I was careless. It has nothing to do with her.""How can you say that? She did this on purpose!"Matteo stepped harder on the gas pedal, then glanced over at Vera's hand. His tone softened instantly. "Does it hurt? Hang in there. We're almost at the hospital. I can't let anything happen to your hand."She blinked innocently. "It's just a small cut. We don't need to go to the hospital. Don't make such a big deal out of it.""No way." He cut her off immediately, his voice turning serious. "You're going to be a top jewelry designer someday. You can't afford even the tiniest injury to your hands. It has to be treated properly."She lowered
