Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
"No! They're all fake, they must be!"

I shrugged and smiled helplessly. I wanted to take my phone back from Lola, but she would not let go.

She scrolled until the end of the album when her face suddenly popped up on the screen. As if finally having leverage, she yelled, "Ah-ha! Didn't you say you were married? Please explain to me why you still have a photo of me?"

Her friends instantly snatched my phone over and mocked me once more, as if I was finally exposed for lying.

"Kevin, I really thought you'd finally grown a spine! Turns out you've just Photoshopped some photos to lie to us!"

"I knew it! He had been happily slaving away for Lola all these years. How could he possibly marry someone else? He would probably spend his entire life serving Lola!"

Lola immediately turned smug and looked at me disdainfully with a raised chin. "Kevin, I overestimated you. I almost believed your lie! How lonely are you to create so many fake photos? And you even used Ms. Smith's face! I feel ashamed for you, even if you don't!"

She threw my phone to the ground. It fell with a loud crack.

"Stop!"

I was too late. When I bent down to pick up my phone, the phone was broken into pieces.

I wanted to pick it up because this was my wedding gift from my wife, but one of Lola's friends immediately stepped on it.

"You liked to pretend, right? Aren't you the son-in-law of the Smith family? Why do you even care about some stupid phone?"

"That's right! You think that just because of some birth certificate and some stupid photos, you'd make Lola regret and want you back? Take a good look at yourself in the mirror!"

Timothy furrowed his brows and told them to stop. Then, he pretended to show some kindness and helped me up, but in the process, the diapers in my arms fell to the ground, scattered all over the spilt milk. The entire scene was tragic to behold.

"I'm sorry, Kevin. Lola shouldn't have done this." Timothy wanted to apologize, but Lola interrupted him, "He's out here being disgusting and a liar, yet I'm the one to blame? Did I ask him to pursue me for ten years?

"Timothy, you're just too kind, which is why he'd so boldly make fake photos. You don't have to apologize to someone like him! Even standing close to him makes me want to puke!"

At that moment, Lola's phone rang.

"Lola! Where are you? We already told you the time and place. Why are you still not here yet?"

Lola's mother's voice rang out in the video call. Lola and I were neighbors when we were young, so our parents both know each other.

"Mom, why should I go to celebrate your friend having a grandchild? You go and have fun! I'm busy!" Lola brushed her off, about to hang up.

"What are you talking about? You and Kevin grew up together! You didn't even attend his wedding! How could you skip out on his welcome baby party!"

Lola's smile stiffened. She looked at me, stunned.

"Hold on there, Mom! Who did you say got married and had a child?"

At one point, she turned her phone toward me. Her mother greeted me affectionately, "Oh, Kevin! So you're with Lola now! Once you register your baby, bring her over! Show her how cute your daughter is!"

I nodded and was just about to exchange pleasantries with Lola's mother when Lola hung up.

She walked over to me, furious, "Kevin, how low can you stoop?! You'd even go to the extent of lying to my parents? You should just give up on me! I'll never ever get together with a liar like you! You disgust me!"

Then, she raised her hand, about to slap me.

The next second, a bodyguard grabbed her hand. A familiar voice rang out behind me, "Who would dare to lay a finger on my husband?"

Stephanie immediately bent down to help Lola dress her wound up once more. The moment Stephanie lowered, however, Lola slapped her to the ground."It's all your fault! You stole Kevin from me! He wouldn't have left me!" I was so infuriated that I kicked Lola off. "Lola! You've gone mad! Do you think that just because you put on the wedding gown that you threw away, I'd come back to you? Don't you see that it's dirty already? We can never go back to the way we were before!"How many times do I have to tell you to get it into your thick skull? I don't love you anymore! Do you understand?"I was infuriated looking at Stephanie's swollen, reddened cheek. I could not let the kindest woman I had ever known, the one who looked after me when I was at rock-bottom, to suffer time and time again all because of me.Lola jumped at my reaction. She did not expect that someone like me–who used to obey her every order–would one day hit her."Kevin…""Enough! Lola, if you really want to marry,

Lola seemed to have noticed my gaze on her tattoo. She immediately covered her tattoo with her sleeve, but the tattoo seemed more obvious when she did it."My wife turned on the lights, not me. As for your photo, I missed it when I was clearing my gallery for storage space. When you found out about it, I immediately deleted it. Don't read too much into this. Just go home. Timothy must be worried sick!""No! Let me explain! Nothing is going on between Timothy and me!"At that moment, a figure who had been standing in the distance for a long time suddenly ran over and picked her up."Lola! What are you doing?! I won't allow you to stoop so low! So what if he had gotten married? We'll get married next week! No! Tomorrow!"Lola, who had been sobbing, quieted down instantly. She looked at me as she thought quickly.A moment later, her eyes sparkled. She pulled Timothy along and left. "Alright, we'll get married tomorrow! Once we get married, he'll regret it! Yes. He'll surely regret i

When the security guards noticed the commotion, they quickly went over to deal with it.I patted Stephanie's hand and said gently, "Why don't you take the baby in? I'll come soon."Perhaps my being gentle with another woman provoked Lola. She shrugged her parents off and ran over to me."Spit it out, Kevin! All of this is fake, right? Don't think I'll give you more attention just because you played such a trick. Forget it! You're not good enough for me!"Lola's parents looked at me hesitantly, shaking their heads. Even Lola's friends were terrified by how menacing she looked.Thinking about how we were neighbors for so many years, I could not bear to be cruel, so I patted Lola on the shoulder and said, "It's real. I'm married to another woman, and I have a daughter. Don't worry. I won't bother you ever again."I added, "You were right, Lola–I was delusional back then. But now I've come to my senses. I let both of us off the hook."My tone had not a hint of displeasure. On the co

Lola seemed to be convincing her friends, but she was also doing it to herself. Her friends went along with her."You're right! Everyone in Brookstown knows Kevin has been trying to win you over for so many years! How could he suddenly have a change of heart?""I'm guessing he must feel threatened by Timothy, so he came up with such a huge act to gain your attention! That cheap, lowly scumbag!""Yeah. If he has truly had a change of heart, why does he still have a photo of Lola?"Lola's face regained its color, hearing what they said. "I'll go to the hotel that my mother said. I'm going to see how he continues this act!" she said while putting on makeup, pressing in a huge amount of concealer under the eyes to cover her eye bags."Please cover for me. Don't let Timothy know that I'm heading to the hotel. I'm sure you all know what a sensitive soul he is. He might seem like he doesn't care, but every time I'm with another guy, he secretly gets sad."I chuckled, suddenly thinking

Lola's hand was caught mid-air.Having yet to process what had happened, Lola tried to swing her hand down when the bodyguard shoved her to the side.Instantly, a group of bodyguards in suits surrounded me.Lola was baffled, and so were her friends."Come on, Kevin. Don't you think you've gone a little too far just to put on an act for Lola? You even hired people as bodyguards?" One of her friends chimed in.Before I could say anything, my wife, Stephanie, approached. "Honey, you didn't listen to me again. I told you to wait for me, yet you insist on going on your own. Look at the scene you've caused."If my friends at the city hall hadn't told me about this, how much longer are you going to waste your time with this bunch of crazy women?"Stephanie handed our daughter to a nanny behind her before grumbling at me.I quickly went forward to pull her coat together tighter while putting her hands on my chest to warm them up."You've just given birth. I don't want you out and abou
