Kaya was sitting on the bed at the clinic. I felt terrible for bickering with her all morning. I just have been on edge since the whole thing with Jack. I was not mad that I killed him. He deserved to be dead for what he tried to do, but the repercussions of that scared me. I didn't want to have another slaughter like what happened with my parents. I needed to have everyone more than prepared for what may come. If they could walk, they needed to know how to fight. But, Kaya, I worried about her. CadeApril was here, and I watched as Kaya rolled over, her stomach growing daily. She had a sizable baby bump. She was halfway through her pregnancy, and I felt good about it. Howi had not attacked yet. It was peaceful. The snow had stopped, and everything seemed to be going well. Kimi would be remaining with us. Which I was happy about. Kaya wanted her around to be there for the birth. Her mother also wanted to come, but she had yet to tell us if she was coming. Just then, I got a mind link. "Alpha, we have wolves wanting to cross the border." I sat straight up in the bed. Was this it? No, it couldn't be. Howi would not ask to cross the border. "Who is it?" "I don't know. Kaya I felt Cade move into his spot next to me in the bed. I turned over to face him. He looked worried. I mind-linked him. "Cade, what happened." "Charlie is here." "What?" "Howi's pack attacked him. There were only five of them who survived. He joined our pack and his four other wolves. They are all now shadow pack." I lay there at him, looking horrified, no doubt. I didn't understand why Howi would go after them. They had nothing to gain by going after them. Charlie's pack was tiny. It's smaller than the Crescent Moon Pack. The whole thing seemed strange. Then we would have a better idea of what was happening or, at the very least, know what happened to his pack that no longer existed. Kaya was sitting down, her feet up on the little table. Her legs had swollen up again. She had been on them too much. I was honestly worried about the preeclampsia. We were able to go to the doctor earlier as Charlie and the rest of his group had slept most of the day. The doctor was concerned that her blood pressure was so high. He said the swelling would worsen and that she needed to pull back more. She was not happy with this news. But I knew she would do what she could to improve the situation. No one she had grown up with had this much swelling so early in their pregnancy, and though she tried to act like she was not worried, I could see past that. I couldn't help but wonder what the stress of all this was doing to her body. She was already struggling, and now she had more to worry about. I should have had her sit out of the meeting. But she was the Luna of Shadow Pack and deserved to be here. No matter the fact, I wanted her to remain stress-free for the remainder of her pregnancy. Mark broke the uncomfortable silence. KayaCade and I decided it would be best to get the baby's stuff early. According to the doctor, and I had to agree with him, I needed to stay off my feet as much as possible. So, Cade and I were in the car on our way to the city to get some things. Apparently, there was a lot to get for babies in the South. Where I was from, it was hand-made clothes and a form of a carrier to carry them when you did work. That consisted of a board and a lot of bedding to keep warm. But Helen and some of the other women in the pack had told me there were many other things, like bottles and better carriers for children. Not to mention nursery stuff. I didn't know much about things like that. I also know they used disposable diapers here, which excited me. In the North, all nappies had to be washed and reused, and honestly, growing up with younger siblings, I had to wash some of those, and I hated it. Now, I was super excited I got to skip that part. So Cade said we would go to the city.
