Chapter 2

작가: Spicy Shrimp
After work, I went back to the big villa that Stella and I called home.

I had bought it with the commissions I earned from drinking with clients and talking myself hoarse selling houses.

The down payment alone took three years of savings. Every month after that, I still had to cover more than 4,000 in mortgage payments.

Back when we were still in our small hometown, Stella had always envied people who lived in big villas. I remembered that, and I made it happen.

But now, standing in that living room, I couldn't feel any warmth in it at all.

After a shower, I was about to go downstairs and get something to eat.

That was when I saw a bottle of stomach medicine sitting on top of the shoe cabinet at the entryway.

Stella had a bad stomach. Whenever she drank, the pain made her break out in a cold sweat, so she always kept that medicine with her.

She must have left in a hurry today and forgotten it.

I stared at the bottle, my hand frozen in midair.

Back when Stella had just started her business, she began drinking with clients every day, too.

I told her to stay home and let me support her, but she said she didn't want that. If I could drink, so could she.

Once, she drank a whole bottle of whiskey. When she came home, she threw up, and after that, the stomach pain hit so hard that she rolled around on the bed.

That night, I crouched outside the emergency room, unable to stop crying.

After that, I worked myself into the ground, hoping that one day, she wouldn't have to drink with clients or keep swallowing her pride just to keep people happy.

After hesitating for a long time, I still picked up the medicine, called a cab, and went to the hotel where her reunion was being held.

I didn't plan to go in and ruin her night. I only wanted to leave the medicine at the front desk and text her so she could pick it up herself.

As I passed a private room with the door half open, the laughter inside made me stop.

"Hey, didn't your husband just get promoted again? He's making half a million a year now, right? That's incredible!"

"Please, that's nothing compared to yours. Overseas master's degree, then straight into a Fortune 500 company."

It was Stella's classmates, comparing lives with each other.

I stood outside the door and listened, finding the whole thing pointless.

Someone suddenly turned the conversation toward Stella, their tone carrying a hint of mockery.

"Stella, why didn't that husband of yours come? You know, the one who dropped out of school and worked himself to death for you?"

Outside the room, I almost laughed.

Once, Stella had taken me to one of her college reunions, and in the restroom, I heard two people talking.

"How did Stella end up with a husband like that? He only finished high school. What does she even see in him?"

I didn't tell Stella because I didn't want to make things hard for her.

I thought Stella would brush it off the way she used to, or at least say a few words in my defense.

Instead, she went quiet for two seconds before saying lightly, "Don't bring him up. We've been divorced for a while. We were just too different. It was never going to work."

It felt as if someone had slapped me across the face.

Divorced for a while? Since when?

During the day, I was still her husband, and by night, I had become the man she had supposedly divorced long ago.

"Oh my god, you're divorced? Then who are you with now?"

Her classmates were stunned, their voices full of curiosity.

"Let me introduce him." Stella's voice sounded again, carrying a hint of pride. "This is Tanner. He has a master's degree from overseas, and he's also my current…husband."

The private room erupted.

"Wow, Stella, you really kept that quiet!"

"I knew it. I was wondering why you brought such a handsome guy with you. Turns out you'd already upgraded!"

Tanner's fluent Waldreich rang out. He said something to the server, probably asking them to switch out the bottle of red wine.

The server answered respectfully.

I looked through the crack in the door.

Stella leaned against Tanner's shoulder, her smile bright and effortless.

All at once, I felt as if the past six years had been one big joke.

I had thought all the hardship and suffering were worth it.

I thought Stella was different from everyone else, that she wouldn't look down on my education or my background.

It turned out that she was exactly the same.

She was just better at pretending than they were, and she had kept it up longer.

The office went silent in an instant.Every coworker set down what they were doing and turned to watch the scene unfold, watching it like a joke at Stella's expense.Tanner yanked himself out of her grip and straightened his rumpled suit. The mild, polished manner he usually wore was gone.He said with a cold laugh, "Stella, watch your mouth. What do you mean I stole your client? Clients belong to the company. Whoever has the ability to close them gets them. What, did you think this was real? Did you honestly think I was that into you?""How dare you…"Stella shook with anger and raised her hand to slap him.Tanner caught her wrist and shoved it away, his eyes full of contempt."Save it. You couldn't even hold on to Felix, the ex-husband who would've done anything for you. That's on you. Deep down, you're vain and selfish. Everything happening to you now is exactly what you deserve."Tanner's words cut like a knife, striking exactly where Stella hurt most. The next day, Stella

The next morning, I had just finished Summit Realty's morning meeting and was about to head out to inspect the landmark project we had recently secured. Then I saw Stella downstairs outside the company building."Felix…"Her voice shook, thick with tears and congestion."My stomach hurt all night. It hurt so badly that I thought I was going to die…"Her eyes were red as she reached for my sleeve, her voice softer and humbler than I had ever heard it."Can we get remarried? I don't care about being a director anymore. I don't need some overseas graduate to make me look good. I only want you. Come back and take care of me, okay?"I looked at her and felt nothing. If anything, I found it absurd.I stepped aside, avoiding her hand, and pointed to the pharmacy across the street."See that pharmacy? It's open 24 hours, and there's a pharmacist inside. If your stomach hurts, buy medicine or make a doctor's appointment. I'm not obligated to take care of you anymore, and I don't have t

Right when Stella was already overwhelmed, her dad, Edward Frost, suddenly had a heart attack. The local hospital back home wasn't equipped to handle it, so he was transferred by ambulance overnight to a major medical center in the city.Stella's mother, Amelia Frost, was losing her mind outside the emergency room and called Stella more than a dozen times. At the time, Stella was drinking with clients. Her phone was on silent, so she never picked up.With no other choice, Amelia instinctively called me.When the call came in, I was just about to rest.Even though Stella and I were already divorced, I had never forgotten how kind Edward had been to me back then.Without a word, I threw on a jacket and rushed to the hospital.I spent the day running from one department to another, paid ten grand up front toward Edward's hospital bill, and arranged a private room for him.At 2 a.m., Edward's condition finally stabilized. He lay in the hospital bed, looking at me covered in sweat

After the divorce, I gave myself a vacation.Over the years, aside from business trips, I had barely left the city.During those few days off, I still couldn't help wondering what Stella's life would look like without me.That morning, Stella woke with a dull ache in her stomach. It was an old problem from years of drinking with clients. In the past, whenever this happened, all she had to do was turn over. There would always be a glass of water on the nightstand, with her stomach medicine already measured out beside it.But that morning, there was nothing by the bed.Tanner had gotten up early and carefully made breakfast. Two fried eggs, two avocado salads, and two glasses of iced pour-over Americano. Beside the plates, he had even arranged a bouquet of red roses with obvious effort."Morning, sweetheart. Try what I made."He stood there in silk pajamas, smiling gently.Stella looked at the iced Americano, condensation sliding down the glass, and her stomach tightened.Hol

Stella looked as if the strength had gone out of her all at once. Her face turned pale, and her mouth opened, closed, then opened again."H-How did you know…"The mask she had spent so long holding in place shattered right in front of me."How I found out doesn't matter. Just remember to meet me at the courthouse tomorrow at ten."I turned back to my desk, opened my computer, and organized the handover files before walking to Tanner's workstation."All the official procedures and materials are here."Tanner flipped through them, the corner of his mouth lifting as he spoke with that fake courtesy of his."Thanks for laying the groundwork for a whole month. I'll handle the follow-up from here. You should get some rest."I looked at his smug face and couldn't be bothered to waste another word.Tanner had no idea that the foreign partner's local representative was someone I had spent two weeks drinking with. I had also waited three full days outside a school district office to he

So Stella wanted me to hand over clients I had worked so hard to maintain for years, just so the man who stole my deal could practice on them?I didn't say anything. My gaze moved to her neck. When she had lowered her head to pick up a document, her scarf had loosened a little. On her fair skin, there was a dark purple-red hickey, plain as day.I thought I had already gone numb. But when I saw it, my stomach still turned."Why aren't you saying anything?"When Stella saw me staring at her, she touched her neck instinctively and tightened the scarf. Her eyes flickered, but her mouth stayed stubborn."This is a strategic company decision. Don't drag your personal feelings into it again. You already made a scene over the last contract. Are you going to do it again this time?"I didn't want to keep swallowing it."Where were you last night?"Stella froze. Her expression shifted, but she quickly composed herself."I drank too much and stayed at the hotel. Tanner happened to be com
