Chapter 2

Author: Soaring Slothcat
The next morning, I skipped my hospital checkup and headed straight to the insurance agency downtown.

The receptionist froze when she saw a twelve-year-old girl walking through the doors completely on her own. "Can I help you, sweetheart? Are you looking for someone?"

"Hi. I'd like to check my life insurance policy. My name is Freya Mason, and the policyholder is Sandra Warren."

She hesitated for a second, but typed my name into her system anyway. "Okay, let's see... Your policy has a five-million-dollar death benefit, and the primary beneficiaries are listed as your parents, Daniel Mason and Sandra Warren."

"Can I change the beneficiaries?"

"You can, but it requires the policyholder's signature. And that's your mom."

I nodded. "What if the policyholder doesn't agree?"

"Then it can't be changed."

I paused to think. "What if I take out a new policy on myself? Can I list someone else as the beneficiary?"

The woman stared at me, taken aback. "Sweetheart... you're only twelve. Minors can't purchase their own insurance policies. Why are you asking all this?"

I smiled at her. "It's nothing. I just wanted to know if there's a way to keep my parents from getting the money after I die."

The receptionist's face drained of color.

She immediately stepped out from behind the desk and crouched down to look me in the eye. "Is everything okay at home? Did something happen?"

"No. Thanks for your help."

I turned around and walked out into the bright afternoon sun.

It was a beautiful day, but I knew I wouldn't see many more of them. Not because my heart was failing, but because I had made my choice.

Before they could ever touch a single cent of that five million dollars, I was going to drain every penny, or give it all away.

No matter what, I was going to make sure they got absolutely nothing.

When I got home, my eight-year-old brother, Andy, was practicing the piano in the living room.

He didn't even bother looking up as I walked in. "Mom's furious with you. She said you skipped your checkup today."

"Oh."

"She said if you keep disobeying, she’s going to cut back on your medication."

I stopped dead in my tracks. "What do you mean?"

Andy played a smooth chord on the keys, completely unfazed. "Exactly what I said. Isn't your medicine super expensive? Like, twenty thousand dollars a month? Mom said if you won't cooperate with the doctor, she’s not paying for it anymore. I mean, besides..."

He trailed off, suddenly catching himself.

"Besides what?"

"Besides, it's incurable anyway."

Hearing an eight-year-old say those words with the same cold, matter-of-fact tone as our father sent a chill down my spine.

I just stared at him. This was the golden child, the boy who had been spoiled and pampered his entire life. He wasn't inherently evil, just raised to believe that my life had zero value.

Ever since he was born, everyone in this house had reinforced the same message: Your sister is a burden. She's a money pit, damaged goods waiting to break.

"Andy."

"Yeah?"

"You play really well."

Andy finally raised his head, looking at me with a flicker of genuine surprise. "Thanks."

I turned and walked upstairs to my bedroom.

Once inside, I pulled out the hand-me-down iPad Dad had given me. It was the only device I owned, and only because Andy had upgraded and tossed it aside.

Dr. Kelly walked over and crouched in front of my wheelchair."Freya, what do you want to do from now on?"I wiped away my tears. "Dr. Kelly, I want to study medicine.""Medicine?""Yeah. I want to become a doctor, just like you. So if I ever run into kids who were like me, I can save them."Dr. Kelly smiled softly, a tear spilling over her cheek. "Alright then. I'll be waiting for you."Craig chimed in from behind the wheelchair, "Well, then I'll be your English tutor from now on, completely free of charge!""No way," I said. "You have to charge me."Craig blinked, taken aback."I'm paying you a salary. You're a teacher, and a teacher deserves to make an honest living."Craig's lips trembled, unable to utter a word for a long moment. Finally, he just gave a deep, resolute nod.The warm sunlight washed over us.Craig pushed my wheelchair, Ginger lay contentedly on my lap, and Dr. Kelly walked right beside me. Behind us was a crowd of strangers calling out their heartfelt bl

Craig was sitting in the chair by my bed, cradling Ginger in his lap, fast asleep. Nearby, Dr. Kelly leaned against the wall, heavy dark circles hanging under her eyes.James Hawthorn was there too, holding an official document in his hand."You're awake?" James smiled softly. "I've got good news for you. The court reached a verdict in the first-instance trial."Daniel Mason was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to twelve years in state prison. Sandra Warren was convicted as an accomplice to attempted murder and sentenced to eight years."Furthermore, the court has permanently stripped both of them of their parental and legal guardianship rights."I leaned my head back against the pillow, staring up at the ceiling.Twelve and eight years… It was enough. Not because of the severity of the sentence, but because from this day forward, I would never have to look at that whiteboard again. That countdown had finally hit zero, and yet, I was still alive."Mr. Hawthorn?" I

I looked down at the envelope, tears welling in my eyes."Andy, I can't take your money.""Why not?" Panic flushed his face. "Is it not enough? I won't buy any more toys, I swear! I'll save every dollar for you—""It's not too little," I interrupted, gently pressing the envelope back into his hands. "It's because your thought means far more to me than any amount of money ever could."Andy burst into tears. He threw himself against the edge of the bed and clung to my arm. "Please don't die, Freya! If you die, I won't have a sister anymore..."I gently patted his head.My eight-year-old brother wasn't a bad kid. He was just a child who had the misfortune of being raised in a deeply toxic home."I'm not going to die," I told him, keeping my voice steady and firm. "I'm going to stay right here and watch you grow up."The issue with the surgery funds was ultimately resolved in a way I never could have anticipated.Dr. Kelly shared my story online. She kept all real names anonymous,

"You can't do this! I have rights! I want my lawyer!" Daniel roared, thrashing against the officers' grip.Sandra collapsed into her chair, her whole body shaking. "No... it wasn't my idea! He's the one who made me cut her medication! I was just following his orders…""Mrs. Warren, you're coming with us too," James said coldly. "Accomplices are just as guilty."The officers pulled Sandra to her feet as she screeched, "I'm her mother! How could I possibly want to hurt my own daughter? Everything I did was for her own good!"Out in the hallway, I sat quietly in a wheelchair.Dr. Kelly stood behind me, holding the handles as we watched the scene unfold from a short distance away.Sandra caught sight of me, and her expression instantly shifted from terror to pure rage. "It was you! Freya, you recorded us! You ungrateful little brat! We raised you for twelve years, and this is how you repay us?!"I stared at her, my voice calm."Mom, you raised me for twelve years. But it only took

At 5.30 p.m., Daniel finally arrived at the hospital.Sandra was already waiting in the hallway. Her eyes were red, but Daniel could tell immediately that she hadn’t been crying. She was nervous.Dr. Kelly sat waiting for them inside her office. "Mr. and Mrs. Mason, please have a seat.""Freya's heart function is dropping at an alarming rate. If she doesn't undergo surgery within the next forty-eight hours, she won't survive the week."Sandra gasped. "Th-that fast?"Daniel remained expressionless. "How much is the surgery?""Three million dollars.""And the success rate?""Sixty percent."With that, Daniel went completely quiet.Sandra cast a quick, silent glance in his direction. For one brief second, their eyes met across the desk, conducting a silent exchange.'No surgery.'"Dr. Kelly," Daniel spoke up, breaking the silence. "We need some time to think it over.""Think it over?" Dr. Kelly's voice rose, sharp with disbelief. "Mr. Mason, your daughter might not survive t

James Hawthorn didn't look like a high-profile prosecutor when he arrived. Wearing a casual jacket and wire-rimmed glasses, he looked more like a university professor. He sat by my bedside and listened as I walked him through everything from the very beginning. Then he listened to the recordings."The surgery costs three million, and the survival rate is only sixty percent. We’re better off keeping the money and waiting for the payout. That’s five million straight to the bank.""I've already cut it down to one pill a day. In a few days, I'll stop giving it to her altogether.""One month left. When the time comes, we'll just say her condition took a sudden turn for the worse. Death by natural causes."James took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.In his fifteen years as a prosecutor, he had worked on murders, high-level corruption, and organized crime cases. But this was the first time he had ever heard parents so calmly planning the death of their own daughter."Freya.""Yea
