Kasen felt as if the air had been sucked from his lungs.

He stood paralyzed, his eyes locked on Maeva. The word beggars echoed in his mind, sharp and cutting. This was the woman who had spent three years folding his shirts and making his tea without a single complaint. Now, she was looking at him as if he were dirt on her designer heels.

"Beggars?" Liora's shriek pierced the heavy silence of the lobby. She stepped around Kasen, her face flushed with ugly, defensive rage. "Who are you calling a beggar, Maeva? Look at you, parading around in a fake suit! Who did you sleep with to get a job here? Did you throw yourself at the real President of Sterling just to spite us?"

Liora turned to Marcus, pointing a shaking finger at Maeva. "You! Security guard! You should check her credentials! She's a fraud! She doesn't belong in a place like this!"

Marcus didn't move an inch. His hand rested on his belt, his eyes turning cold as he looked down at Liora.

"Silence," Marcus commanded, his voice booming through the high-ceilinged lobby. "You are speaking to Madam President Maeva Sterling. Sole owner and heiress to the trillion-dollar Sterling Conglomerate. If you raise your voice at her again, I will have you thrown into the street."

Kasen's entire reality shattered.

The name Sterling. He had always assumed she was just an orphan with a common last name. He had never connected her to the legendary, ultra-private Sterling dynasty that ruled the global financial sector from Europe.

She wasn't a charity case. She was the crown jewel of the wealthiest family on earth.

And she was Apex.

"Maeva..." Kasen's voice was barely a whisper. He stepped forward, his legs feeling heavy, almost numb. The arrogant, untouchable CEO mask he had worn for years was gone, replaced by a desperate, sweating panic. "Maeva, please. Tell me this is a joke. We were married. We spent three years together. You... you can't do this to me. You can't destroy Axiom Global."

Maeva finally turned her gaze to him. Her eyes were like twin chips of obsidian, devoid of any warmth, any pity, or any memory of the life they had shared.

"I am not destroying Axiom Global, Kasen," she said, her tone smooth and calm. "I am simply letting gravity do its job. I stopped carrying you, and now you are falling."

"We built that company together!" Kasen pleaded, reaching out toward her, though the bodyguards tensed. "You can't just revoke the patent licenses! We were partners!"

"Partners?" Maeva let out a soft, mocking breath. "You didn't build Axiom Global, Kasen. I did. Every algorithm that made you a billionaire was coded by my hands. Every high-frequency trading sequence that won you your board's praise was designed by Apex. You were nothing but a loud, arrogant frontman who mistook my silence for weakness."

Kasen felt a cold sweat run down his spine. She was right. He had never understood how their trading software was always five steps ahead of the market. He had taken all the credit, assuming his own genius was the driving force.

"Maeva, I made mistakes," Kasen stammered, his pride pulverized in front of his ex-mistress and the lobby staff. "The divorce... Liora's pregnancy... we can work this out. Just give me the patents back. Name your price. I'll pay whatever you want."

Liora stared at Kasen in horror. "Kasen! Why are you begging her? She's just your ex-wife!"

"Shut up, Liora!" Kasen roared, his voice cracking with pure desperation.

He didn't care about Liora anymore. He cared about his survival. Axiom Global's stock was in a freefall. By noon, he would be ruined. He looked back at Maeva, his eyes pleading. "Please, Maeva. What is your price?"

Maeva's lips curved into a lazy, beautiful smile that didn't reach her eyes.

She reached into her sleek leather portfolio and pulled out the manila envelope he had thrown onto her dinner plate just the night before. She tapped the signed divorce papers against her palm.

Then, with agonizing slowness, she walked over to a polished, brushed-steel trash receptacle sitting near the VIP elevator.

She held the papers over the opening. Her fingers relaxed.

The envelope slipped from her hand and dropped into the trash with a hollow, echoing thump.

Kasen felt his heart drop with it.

"Axiom Global is already bankrupt, Kasen," Maeva said, stepping back into his personal space. The scent of her expensive perfume filled his lungs, a sharp contrast to the coldness of her words. "You have no leverage. You have nothing to buy the patents back with."

"Then what do you want?" Kasen choked out, his chest heaving. "Just tell me."

"I will buy Axiom Global from you," Maeva said smoothly. "For one dollar."

Kasen gasped, his eyes widening. "One dollar? That's a multi-billion-dollar firm!"

"Not without my patents, it isn't," she retorted coldly. "On Monday, Axiom Global will become a subsidiary of the Sterling Conglomerate. And you, Kasen Thorne..."

She leaned in, her voice dropping to a lethal, quiet whisper that only he could hear.

"...will report to my office at 8:00 AM as my personal assistant. You will make my coffee, hold my files, and stand in the corner while I run the financial world."

"You're insane," Kasen whispered, his face pale. "I am a CEO. I will never work as your assistant. I'll take you to court first."

Maeva didn't blink. She reached into her portfolio once more, pulling out a thin tablet. She tapped the screen, displaying a series of encrypted financial logs.

"You can try," Maeva said, her voice clear and carrying across the lobby. "But before you do, you might want to ask your soon-to-be wife about the secret offshore accounts she's been using to skim money from Axiom's marketing funds. I've compiled the entire ledger. It is corporate embezzlement, Kasen. If you don't sign my acquisition contract and show up on Monday..."

She looked at Liora, whose face had gone white, her jaw trembling in terror.

"...Liora goes to federal prison for twenty years. And you will watch her go from a park bench, penniless."

Maeva turned her back on him, stepping into the gold-plated VIP elevator. The heavy metal doors began to slide shut.

"See you Monday morning, Kasen," she said.

The doors clicked shut, leaving Kasen standing in the silent lobby, trapped in a nightmare of his own making.

One year later. The blinding crystal chandeliers of the Eden City Grand Hotel's grand ballroom shone with the same brilliance they had twelve months ago.Maeva Sterling sat at Table One, her fingers tracing the stem of her untouched champagne glass, just as she had during her public, agonizing humiliation. But tonight, the atmosphere in the room was permanently altered. The high-society wives who had once snickered as she was escorted toward the service exit weren't whispering out of pity or mockery. They watched her every movement like disciples awaiting a mandate, their eyes filled with pure, breathless reverence.Maeva was no longer the plain, charity-case wife hidden in the shadows of a giant. She was the sole, untouchable Patriarch of the entire trillion-dollar Sterling Conglomerate, her authority absolute. And tonight, the soft, maternal glow of her pregnancy only enhanced her dangerous, untouchable beauty. She was visibly, beautifully pregnant, a queen who had conquered both he

"He left his crown behind, Maeva."The gravelly, quiet voice of Patriarch David Sterling cut through the heavy silence of the empty penthouse.Maeva didn't spin around. She stood frozen by the glass desk, her fingers still clutching the signed share transfer document and her cleared Auction House deed. Her grandfather had just arrived, flanked by his elite security detail, his gold-tipped cane resting quietly on the floorboards. David Sterling had spent his life trading people like commodities, but even his cold heart could recognize the truth of Kasen's sacrifice. He walked over to her side, his cold blue eyes looking down at the two papers in her hands. He looked at the empty exit where Kasen's tall frame had just disappeared, then looked back at Maeva's pale face."A man who gives up a billion-dollar crown doesn't want to be your business partner, Maeva," the Grandfather said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. "He wants to be your husband."The words hit Maeva's chest li

The heavy elevator doors had closed, swallowing Zane Castille's desperate, furious screams, but the silence left behind in the eighty-story penthouse was deafening. The gold light of the chandeliers flickered against the damp, rain-streaked glass, a quiet sanctuary eighty floors above the city. The threat was permanently neutralized. The global conspiracy to dismantle her family's legacy had been shattered in a single hour, and the Sterling Conglomerate's stocks were already surging back to historic heights.Maeva stood frozen by the glass desk, her chest rising and falling in slow, ragged cycles as she tried to process the sheer scale of what had just happened. She watched Kasen walk toward Zane's desk. He didn't look like an assistant anymore; he was a master strategist who had just dismantled an international tycoon with absolute, smiling ease.He reached down and picked up a single, clean document resting on the glass: the cleared deed to her beloved Charity Auction House.Kasen w

The penthouse room went silent as the shattered mahogany double doors slammed against the wall.Kasen Thorne walked through the threshold. The rain beat heavily against the eighty-story glass windows, but his eyes were a cold fire that consumed the room. He wasn't wearing his standard bodyguard's suit, and his posture was no longer bent in submission. He wore an immaculate, bespoke midnight-black billionaire's tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders, radiating a terrifying dominance that filled the entire sky-rise. His face was a cold, sharp mask of steel. He wasn't alone.Flanking him on either side were three older, distinguished men in expensive European tailored suits—the global directors of the three largest Foreign Reserve Banks—alongside five armed federal regulatory authorities. The directors of the Swiss and European Reserve Banks held absolute power over international wire transfers, and their cold, clinical gaze left zero room for negotiation.Maeva felt a sudden, breathless ru

"You always did have a weakness for beautiful assets, Maeva."Zane Castille's voice was a low, purring vibration that sent a cold shiver of pure danger down Maeva's spine. She stood in the center of his sprawling, minimalist high-rise penthouse overlooking the city. The city below was a distant, blurry smudge of lights behind the rain-streaked glass, trapping her eighty floors up in his territory. Liora Vale was finally behind bars, and her grandfather had stopped his suffocating interference. But Zane had just played his final, most venomous card.He had summoned her here under the guise of an urgent legal settlement. Instead, he had laid a thick, leather-bound document on his glass desk—the waterfront shipping terminal deed he had "gifted" her back at the municipal auction."I accepted a gift, Zane, not a partnership," Maeva said, her voice flat, cold, and clinical."It wasn't a partnership, Maeva," Zane smiled, his dark eyes flashing with a predatory, triumphant malice. The Grandfather set his silk napkin down, a thin, satisfied smirk playing on his withered lips."It seems your schedule is indeed locked tonight, Maeva," Patriarch David Sterling said, his voice laced with cold approval as he stood up from the head of the heavy oak table. He leaned heavily on his gold-tipped cane, offering them one final, calculating look. "I will see you both in the Q3 board meeting."The old man turned and marched out of the grand dining room, his elite security detail trailing close behind. The second the heavy oak doors clicked shut, the silence in the room became explosive.Maeva didn't waste a heartbeat. She raised her hand and slapped Kasen's large palm off her bare thigh. The physical contact broke with a sharp, echoing slap, but her chest was still heaving, her skin burning where his warm fingers had just been. The red mark of his hand on her skin felt like a branding iron, a sudden, blinding reminder of her body's deep betrayal. She stood up, her face return
