MasukLysan stood still, his heart pounding against his chest. Roman was looking directly at him, and their gazes locked. All he could think of now was that Roman was there and he was staring directly at him.
The instructor called his name out again, louder, “Lysan, Lysan Dusk! Are you deaf?”
Lysan forced himself to turn away from Roman. He then walked to the center of the combat ring, his legs unsteady. He could feel Roman's piercing gaze on his back.
He faced the instructor that was standing at the corner of the combat ring. She was broad shouldered, a woman with manly build, and a huge scar cutting through her right eye brow.
A frown spread across her face, making her look more terrifying. “I've been calling you for over a minute now, where did your mind wander to, huh?” She paused, “Standard assessment, now—show me your stance.”
Lysan positioned himself wrongly.
The instructor's eye twitched, “What the hell?”
Lysan managed to maintain a calm demeanor on the surface.
“Attack the dummy.” The instructor said.
He moved towards the dummy slowly, attacking in a way that also looked wrong. When he was done, he faced the instructor.
The instructor shook her head and palmed her face. Then she looked up at him, “Magic assessments.” Her voice was flat now, the disappointment already settling in. “Channel through your dominant hand.”
Lysan tried channeling with his left hand. A weak flicker of light appeared in the middle of his palms and died immediately, small sparkles coming out.
The instructor wrote something on her clipboard. Then she looked back at Lysan. “Next, stability on sword fighting.”
He picked up a practice sword, and it felt a little heavy in this body. He walked towards the dummy but was unable to do anything.
He paused and turned around, looking at the nobles section. Roman was still looking at him,a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
Lysan's chest tightened, he removed his gaze, shook his head and turned back to the dummy to continue. He swung the sword against the dummy and dropped it intentionally. This happened twice, then he fell down.
The instructor's face scrunched up in disgust. “That's enough Lysan, you won't continue in combat classes again. I can't keep wasting my time on students like you. I'm transferring you to botany classes now.” She waved her hand, signaling him to leave the ring.
Laughter and murmurs rippled through the crowd.
Lysan heaved a sigh of relief. Only he knew what it took for him to fail this exam. His plan worked. He was going to be moved to botany. Plants and a quiet atmosphere. Away from being seen.
He walked back to the crowd, the section where students of Southgroove academy were seated.
He went back to his seat, beside the red headed guy.
He nudged Lysan's arm, “Nice failing moves you've got there, Lys.” He grinned.
“Dyleon Skye, you're up in five.” The instructor called out.
“Oh, that's me.” The red head smiled at Lysan.
Lysan forced a smile back. So his name was Dyleon. Right. But his eyes kept drifting back to the nobles section. Roman was still there, his cold grey eyes watching Lysan carefully.
“Hey,” Dyleon snapped his fingers in front of Lysan”s face. “You seemed pretty spaced out, what's wrong?”
“Oh, it's nothing.” Lysan looked away from Roman and faced Dyleon. “Just a little bit nervous, you know.”
“Nervous? Youuu?” Dyleon chuckled. “You're the calmest person I know, even under extreme pressures, you always manage to maintain your cool, and—”
Then the instructor called out again. “Dyleon Skye, you're up now.”
Lysan was so grateful, he didn't know how to explain anything to Dyleon. He wasn't familiar with this body, and didn't know the usual things. He released the breath he didn't know he held since Dyleon started questioning him.
Dyleon stood up and glanced at Lysan for a second, “Watch this,” he winked and walked towards the ring.
Dyleon's fight was okay but it was below average. Lysan could see that he was not even trying to fail, he just didn't have the proper skills.
The instructor’s expression was blank all through—second student since Lysan that was failing the exams.
Lysan was watching Dyleon with his eyes, but his mind was elsewhere.
His eyes finally drifted back to the nobles section.
Lysan stomach flipped.
Roman was gone.
His eyes moved to scan the crowd, but there was no trace of Roman. He just disappeared like a ghost.
Dyleon returned to Lysan's side after the instructor gave him his verdict of his performance.
He grinned widely. “Not bad, right Lys? I'll be joining you for the botany classes, yay!!”
“That should be cool, “ Lysan said.
Dyleon's grin softened, “It's more than cool. Lys, I'm so happy, I'll get to spend some extra time with you.”
And he leaned closer to Lysan, closer than necessary.
Lysan’s brows furrowed lightly, but he didn't have the energy to figure out what it meant— yet.
*******
The exams ended in an hour. Students scattered around the field.
Dyleon, still seated beside Lysan, touched Lysan's elbow softly. “Won't you go to the dining hall?”
Lysan hesitated. He should go and eat, and pretend to be normal. But something kept his feet rooted on that spot, so he decided to hang around for a little bit.
“Go ahead, I'll be right there.”
Dyeleon's eyes scanned his face, “You sure? You've been acting… I don't know… Distant.”
“Just tired, I'm getting worked up.”
Dyleon wasn't convinced, but he didn’t push further, “Okay, don't take too long, I'll save you a seat.” Then he placed a hand on Lysan's shoulder and walked away.
Lysan waited until Dyleon disappeared around a corner and sighed.
He sat for a moment, then he stood up to leave.
Someone tapped his shoulder lightly from behind and he turned immediately, but found no one.
He looked around the area, but no one was close enough to him to tap him on his shoulder and reach far.
He shrugged it off and started walking.
As he took a step forward, he felt something from under his feet through his shoes.
He stepped backward and looked at it.
It was a white rose and a note, attached to the stalk.
He pulled out the note and it read, “Welcome back, mate.”
Lysan's eyes widened in shock.
Who the hell dropped that note?
“Don't stop."The words left his mouth before he could even catch them.Roman's eyes darkened, and it wasn't the Entity's black. It was just dark and something hungry passed in between them. He leaned in slowly, giving Lysan every chance to pull away. But Lysan didn't pull away. Roman's lips met his—hard and demanding. No hesitation, no gentleness. He kissed like he owned every inch of Lysan's body, like he had been waiting for this and he was not going to waste another second.Lysan felt his dick twitch slightly in his trousers, and his hand came up, gripping Roman's shirt, grinding against him slowly, moving with the flow if the kiss and something broke free in Roman's body.He leaned in and kissed Lysan harder, grinding in rhythm with Lysan. His hand slid into Lysan’s hair, pulling him even closer until Lysan could feel how hard Roman was. Lysan made a sound—low and desperate, and Roman groaned against his mouth. They kept grinding against each other, and Lysan could feel his re
Lysan' s breath caught in his throat. “You can't be serious.”“I've never been more serious.” Roman turned around and started walking towards him. “I have resources there. Libraries, archives, people who can help us find Silas and defeat him before he gets to us.”Lysan shook his head. He couldn't just leave like that. What about his parents in this lifetime? The parents of the boy he just took over his body? Wouldn't they be worried if he just left the academy? And Dyleon—“No.” He said sharply, and his voice cut through the silence. “I can't just leave the academy, my classes, my parents—”Roman raised a brow. “You're on a scholarship, sponsored by me, so the academy has no say if I withdraw the scholarship.” He stepped closer. “And, you're parents are dead, so what will stop you now?”Lysan's mind was racing. He was on a scholarship, sponsored by Roman, and he could withdraw anytime. Also, this boy he just took over his body doesn’t have parents, so what excuse does he have now?“
Lysan's knuckles hovered over the wood. He had been standing at that spot for three minutes, and his heart was pounding so hard he could feel it in his throat.“Lysan, you could still turn back. You haven't knocked yet.” His mind screamed at him. “You can pretend you never came, you can go back to Dyleon, and try to mend his broken heart. You can still—”His hand crashed against the wood before he finished the thought, and he knocked. Not long after he knocked, the door opened immediately. Roman stood behind the door, dressed in a loose white shirt, the sleeves rolled to his elbows. His pale hair was slightly disheveled, and his grey eyes were sharp and calculative, studying Lysan's face.“Come in,” he said and stepped aside for Lysan to walk through, his voice devoid of any warmth.Lysan swallowed and walked past him. The room smelled like cedar and something warm. Lit candles flickered on every surface, giving the room and eerie vibe. Then Roman closed the door behind him with a s
When Lysan got to the clock tower, it was empty—no one was there. So he decided to wait. The air that night felt chillingly cold, and the moon was hidden behind the clouds, making the tower a bit dark. After what felt like hours, Lysan finally heard footsteos approaching, and his shoulders squared, tensing up.Silas finally stepped out of the shadows. His face was totally different from the previous life. Young, pale and with sharp eyes. Lysan remembered that he saw his particular face, staring at him on the day of the combat exams from the crowd, but he was too overwhelmed to notice.“You asked to see me?” Silas said, and a small smile was tugged at the corner of his lips.Lysan swallowed down the huge lump that formed in his throat and clenched his fists tightly together. “I have questions.”Silas shrugged. "Okay, ask."“I have a lot of questions, Silas. But let's stick to the main thing for now.” He said and shoved his hands in his pocket to prevent Silas from seeing how badly h
When Lysan got back to his dorm, Kassian wasn't there, and he was silently grateful. He dropped on the bed and thought about Roman's request. He doesn't want to go. Not after what he had done to Dyleon. Not after how he had hurt him. But he knew Roman will find him and drag him there himself, one way or another if he doesn't go willingly, so he foreced himself to stand up. He took of his uniform and put on a simple black trousers and a blue sweater. He wore his sneakers and headed out to Roman's quarters. — When he arrived there, the door was open. Inside, there were a few students, mingling with each other. They were either nobles, aristocrats, or the children of powerful families. They were laughing and drinking, fake smile spread across their lips as they pretended to be friends with each other. Lysan stepped inside, and his eyes scanned the crowd, looking for a particular someone. Roman. He saw him at the center of the crowd, charming everyone. When Roman's eyes
Lysan didn't go back to his dorm that night. He couldn't face Kassian. He couldn't face the questions he knew were unavoidable. He couldn't face anything. So he wandered the academy grounds until dawn, the kiss replaying in his mind over and over again, Dyleon's heartbroken expression appearing in his mind, Roman's smug smile masking it afterwards. When the sun finally rose, he dragged himself back to his dorm.Kassian was already awake, sitting on his bed. His eyes narrowed when Lysan walked through the door, and he studied Lysan's face."Where the hell have you been?" Kassian demanded.Lysan didn't answer. He just walked past him and collapsed on his bed.Kassian stood. "Lysan?” He frowned. “Talk to me."Lysan stared at the ceiling. "I finally lost him."Kassian shook his head. "Lost who?""Dyleon." Lysan's voice was hollow. "He saw me with Roman. He saw me kiss him back."Kassian was silent for a long moment. "Shit." He muttered beneath his breath. He sat at the edge of Lysan's bed
Chapter 6- The IntruderRoman turned around and walked to the front of the class. “Today, we'll be learning about symbiotic relationships.” His eyes met Lysan’s. “Organisms that shouldn't work together—but they do.”He smiled and removed his gaze from Lysan. “Some relationships are parasitic, one co
One week had passed since the gala. The academy buzzed with it's normal activities, mostly attended by students from noble families. They were trained under one roof, sorted into tracks based on ability, each track having a special power accompanied with it. Combat track produced soldiers, diplomat
Dyleon sucked in a breath and looked at Lysan wide eyed.Roman's smile didn't falter, but it deepened. His grey eyes shimmered with something Lysan couldn't name.“Pretentious,” Roman repeated slowly, the smile still plastered on his face. “I've been called many things, but that's a first.”Then he
Lysan Dusk lay on his bed, watching the crack on the ceiling as tears spilled from his eyes, his heart contracted painfully inside his chest. He tried to call for help, but his voice barely came out as a whisper. He heard voices in the next room, “He has to go, he knows too much.”More tears spille
