‎Marcus moved closer, bristling. "If she's going, then so am I."

‎My eyes widened. I didn't want Marcus to tag along. What would happen if he discovers the president s a werewolf too?

‎The escort hesitated, his rifle angled slightly lower, like he wasn't sure if Marcus was a threat yet. "You may accompany her to the building. But not inside the chambers."

‎No! I thought the guards will resist and tell him 'no' straight.

‎"Like hell..."

‎"Marcus," I said quickly, touching his arm. My voice was calm, but my fingers trembled. "It's fine."

‎"No, it's not," he shot back, his voice low, fierce. "Something about this stinks. The President doesn't summon random civilians out of the blue. You think this is about politics? About leverage?"

‎"Maybe it's about keeping up appearances," the escort cut in. "Not your concern."

‎Marcus rounded on him. "Not my concern? I've been guarding her since day one. If this goes sideways, it's my concern."

‎I gave Marcus a small, tight smile

‎Seraphina's POV‎‎"Finally."‎‎The moment the chamber doors opened, Marcus was there. He practically lunged at me, his hands clamping down on my shoulders like he needed proof I hadn't been broken in half. His eyes darted over me, frantic, his breathing uneven.‎‎"What happened in there? What did he say?"‎‎My mouth went dry. The President's words still rang inside my skull like a curse...If you refuse me, Marcus dies tonight.‎‎I forced my lips into something that might've passed for a smile if my face weren't stiff as stone. "Nothing... official," I said, slipping past his grip.‎‎"Nothing official?" Marcus's voice cut low, but the fury laced in it made my chest tighten. He stalked after me, boots echoing across the marble floor. "That was over an hour, Sera. You don't lock someone in a room with the President of the freaking country for an hour unless it's serious. W

‎Seraphina's POV‎‎"You're insane if you think I'm just going to nod and play along," I whispered, though my voice shook. My back was pressed against the cold wall, the weight of his bodyguards closing the air around me. My pulse hammered in my ears, and I hated that he could probably hear it.‎‎The President's smile was intentional, and mischievous, the kind that made my blood run cold. "Insane?" he repeated softly, as though tasting the word. "No. Desperate, perhaps. Strategic... absolutely."‎‎I pressed myself harder against the wall as he leaned closer, his cologne coming around me like poison. His voice lowered, intimate, like he was letting me in on a secret no one else dared know. "I have only one daughter, Seraphina. She's... impulsive. Young... But in her anger and hurt she went too far."‎‎The silence after his words stretched tight. My tongue felt like sandpaper. "Too far?" I managed.‎

‎Seraphina's POV‎‎"Wait...what's happening?" one of the lab techs whispered, frowning at the monitor. His finger tapped the edge of the screen like it might change what he was seeing.‎‎"What do you mean?" Elijah's voice snapped like he wasn't expecting things to go wrong. He leaned over the console, close enough for the tech to shrink back.‎‎The man's hand hovered uncertainly over the display. "There's... nothing here. No anomaly. Her blood is clean. Completely clean."‎‎"That's not possible," Elijah barked. His tone had the edge of a cornered animal. "Run it again."‎‎"I did." The tech's eyes darted to me, then back to him. "Three times. The results are the same. She's... she's normal."‎‎Normal. The word felt like a knife, dull and cruel. My heart thudded in my chest, echoing in my ears. I wasn't normal. I knew it deep in my bones, in the way shadows bent too easily when I walked past. So why wasn't it showing?‎‎Elijah's jaw clenched. "The dog wouldn't react unless..."‎

‎Seraphina's POV‎‎The bloodhound's growl was low and menacing, its teeth flashing straight at me. Every muscle in my body went stiff.‎‎"She's one of them!" Agent 12's voice cut through the air making back off.‎‎Before I could even form a reply, Marcus stepped in front of me so fast the handler had to jerk the leash back to keep the dog from colliding with him. "Stop!"‎‎Agent 12 hand twitched toward the sidearm at his hip. "Move, Marcus."‎‎"No," Marcus snapped, planting himself like a wall. "You're not touching her."‎‎The tension was a live wire between us all.‎‎"That dog's never wrong," Agent 5 growled. "If it reacts like this, it means she's carrying..."‎‎"Carrying what?" Marcus shot back. "The scent? Yeah, maybe. Because she was under their custody for days. You think she walked out of that without smelling like them?"‎‎I swallowed hard, trying to keep my face blank. ‎‎"That's not how this works," Agent 5 said sharply.‎‎Marcus squared his shoulders, eyes lookin

‎‎Seraphina's POV‎‎"Imagine! Just imagine!"‎‎Marcus and I froze at the sound of that familiar voice.‎‎A blinding flashlight hit us straight in the face. I blinked rapidly until Layla's silhouette came into focus. Her other hand was on her hip, looking way too pleased with herself.‎‎"We've been looking everywhere for you two," she said, sweeping the beam up and down like she was scanning us for illegal activity. "Your trackers went off days ago, then poof...dead. Only a few minutes ago did they come back on. Thank God we were close by searching... only to come and see you two making out...Sheesh!"‎‎Marcus stepped back instantly, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's... not what it looks like."‎‎"Oh, it exactly looks like what it looks like," Layla said with a smirk. "And trust me, I'm not judging. I'm just saying, you pick the weirdest times for romance."
