Ayra sat on the edge of the marble fountain in the courtyard, the evening air cool against her bare arms. The manor grounds were unusually quiet, the distant rustle of leaves punctuated only by the soft splash of water behind her.

It had been a week since she’d moved into the main estate, and already the atmosphere was beginning to weigh on her—quietly, subtly, like silk wrapping slowly around her throat.

Earlier that day, Boris had helped her with a locked cabinet in the library. He’d been charming in a way Lucian never was—lighthearted, teasing even. He had cracked a joke about the house’s “centuries-old security system,” tapping the stubborn brass lock with the hilt of a penknife until it gave with a reluctant click. Ayra had smiled then, genuinely, in spite of herself.

Boris was the kind of man who knew how to fill silences, who didn’t make the air thick with tension when he entered a room. He was tall like Lucian, similarly built, but his edges were softened.

  • The Devil's Game   Chapter 159 - The Stranger and the Festival

There was something about small towns that bred routine—coffee shops opening at the same hour, porch lights flicking off just as the sun burned the sky orange, neighbors waving like clockwork. It gave the illusion of safety. Of invisibility. But that illusion shattered the moment Ayra spotted the stranger. She had been walking back from the bakery, flour still dusting her elbow, when she saw him. Not a local. Too neat. The way he moved—shoulders tucked, hands jammed deep in his coat pockets, sunglasses on even as dusk crept in—everything about him itched at her skin.He wasn’t watching her.He was tailing Lucian. Her pulse thundered.Lucian had taken the truck to the auto shop downtown like always, dressed in faded jeans and grease-stained shirts that had come to suit him far too well. And now this man—new, clean, too careful—was following at a distance. Watching.Ayra didn’t run. She doubled back instead, circled the block, and waited. Sure enough, the stranger lingered outside the g

The sun filtered lazily through the curtains, casting golden slants across the small living room floor. Ayra stood near the counter, struggling to fit the slightly too-large photo into the cheap frame she’d picked up earlier that morning from a local thrift stall. It was plastic, a bit scratched at the edges, with faux wood texture, but she didn’t care. The picture mattered more.It was one Lucian hadn’t even noticed being taken—a quiet moment from last week, during their walk back from the bakery. They’d paused beside an apple stand.Lucian had been laughing at something she'd said, caught mid-smile, and Ayra had been gazing up at him with a genuine softness she hadn’t realized had shown through. A passerby had offered to snap a photo for them, mistaking them for newlyweds.Ayra hadn’t corrected the assumption. She slid the back panel into place and set it on the corner of the living room shelf, between the chipped ceramic vase Lucian had found at the garage and the stack of letter

  • The Devil's Game   Chapter 157 - Becoming Routine

The town of Hillcroft was the kind of place where everyone said hello, even if they didn’t know you. It was sleepy but spirited, the kind of place that baked pies for the town fair and still had a noticeboard outside the post office. Lucian and Ayra had agreed early on that blending in would mean more than keeping their heads down—it would mean building new people to wear like masks.Their new names were Jacob and Eliza Moore.Eliza. Ayra had picked it herself. Simple, sweet, not too distant from her own name but far enough to feel like a layer of safety. Lucian had raised an eyebrow when she told him hers and smirked when she asked what he’d picked.“Jacob,” he’d said dryly. “As generic as I could manage without calling myself John Smith.”Their paperwork came through a contact of Lucian’s—quiet, quick, no questions asked. With their new identities came new routines. Lucian, or Jacob now, found work at a mechanic’s garage run by an elderly man named Gus. It was nothing fancy—old to

  • The Devil's Game   Chapter 156 - Sit to Tea

The early morning had passed in silence, with Ayra and Lucian moving around each other in companionable quiet as they got ready. There was no need to speak. The comfort between them was becoming habitual, like a well-worn rhythm rediscovered after a long pause.Lucian locked the front door behind them and offered his arm as they strolled the few winding blocks toward the café they’d seen yesterday. Ayra slipped her hand through his without hesitation, her fingers cold from the morning breeze. He rubbed her knuckles absently with his thumb. The town, with its cozy rhythm and familiar faces, was slowly becoming something more than a hiding place. Its cobbled sidewalks and mossy corners seemed untouched by time. Here, life moved slower, deliberately. They didn’t stand out anymore. Or at least, that’s what they told themselves. The café stood on the corner of a sleepy street, its sign swinging lazily with the breeze. Ivy crept along its wooden trim, and the scent of roasted beans and past

It was barely past ten when they locked the front door behind them and stepped into the sun-drenched morning. The town was already humming—slowly, gently, like a body waking up from a long, peaceful slumber.Ayra drew a breath, relishing the air that smelled of pine trees and freshly baked bread. She hadn't realized how much her nerves had been knotted until now. There was something disarming about this place—quiet, undemanding. Even the way the houses leaned toward each other felt conspiratorial, like the whole town had agreed to keep your secrets.Lucian walked beside her, holding two canvas shopping bags, dressed down in a plain gray t-shirt and worn jeans. He looked every inch the charming, grounded man next door. No trace of the power, reputation, or danger clung to him here, and Ayra suspected he was doing it deliberately—for her sake.“It feels like we stepped into a postcard,” she said as they reached the edge of Main Street. The supermarket was a small corner building with

  • The Devil's Game   Chapter 154 - Dust and Laughter

Sunlight streamed in through the gauzy curtains painting golden lines across the creaky floorboards of the old house. Dust motes danced in the light like lazy spirits, and outside, the air was crisp with the scent of pine and wet soil. Ayra stretched on the battered couch, blinking against the morning light, while Lucian shuffled back into the room, balancing two mugs of steaming tea.“Still feels weird,” she murmured, taking hers. “Waking up and not needing to check encrypted lines or plan a counter-surveillance route.”Lucian chuckled, brushing a kiss against the crown of her head before settling beside her. “Let it feel weird. Weird is good. Weird is quiet.”They sipped in silence, leaning into the pause that neither of them had known they needed.---By noon, they'd started cleaning in earnest. The house—an old countryside property Ayra’s mother had once purchased under an alias—wasn’t exactly in disrepair, but it had sat untouched for years. Cobwebs claimed the corners. Dust co
