Chapter 21

Shattered Loyalties

Peter’s mind was reeling as he stood in Tiffany’s opulent living room, his eyes fixed on Alex, Aurora’s best friend. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Alex, the person who had always stood by Aurora’s side, was now working with Tiffany, the woman determined to bring Aurora down. His heart pounded in his chest, and he couldn’t help but blurt out, “Alex, what are you doing?”

Alex met Peter’s gaze with a cold, detached expression. Gone was the warm, caring friend that Peter once knew. “I’m doing what I should’ve done a long time ago, Peter. I’m punishing Aurora for what she did to me.”

Peter’s confusion deepened. Aurora and Alex had been inseparable, their bond seemingly unbreakable. What could have possibly happened to make Alex turn against her? “Punish her? What are you talking about? Aurora never did anything to hurt you!”

Tiffany, who had been silently watching the tension build between the two men, took a step forward, her lips curling into a si

Chapter 83 Stranger in the CaféThe library air hung heavy, thick with the scent of old paper and forgotten stories. Shadows, long and distorted, danced across the walls, cast by the single, flickering bulb struggling to pierce the gloom. My father sat opposite me, his silhouette a study in weariness. His face, etched with the lines of time and regret, was a landscape of buried memories He held a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid swirling within like trapped secrets. He took a deep breath, the sound rasping in the stillness. His fingers tightened around the glass, the knuckles white. His eyes, clouded with a pain I'd never seen before, finally met mine. For the first time, I saw not just my father, but a man haunted by his past."It all started twenty-five years ago," he began, his voice rough, as if the words themselves were difficult to dislodge. "A lifetime ago, it seems now."The present dissolved. The library, the dim light, even my own anxiety, faded into nothingness. I w

Chapter 82Unveiling the PastThe cab ride home was a blur. My mind raced with thoughts, too many to count, too many to bear. With each passing moment, my tears flowed freely, leaving a trail of despair in their wake.I couldn’t understand it. I couldn’t understand how everything had unraveled so quickly. My heart felt heavy, weighted by the revelations from Don Vito. My past, my family, everything felt like a labyrinth with no clear exit.As the cab screeched to a halt in front of the house, a sense of familiarity washed over me. The green door stood before me like a silent sentinel. I knew, deep down, that walking through that door meant confronting the truth I had been avoiding for so long.Knock…knock…I waited, each second stretching out like an eternity, before hearing Vanessa's voice echo from inside."Coming."I groaned in frustration. Vanessa. The one person who could always manage to get under my skin, no matter the circumstances. The door creaked open, and there she stood,

Chapter 81The Secrets We HideTwo days had passed since the party, yet the whirlwind of questions refused to leave my mind. Each one clawed at my sanity, refusing to be ignored. Why was Peter at the party? Why was Tiffany clinging to him? Were they back together? And why couldn’t I choose Damian? Why did Dominique still have this hold on me? Why did I love him when I knew he’d only hurt me?My thoughts spiraled into chaos, a storm with no end.“Arghhhhhh!” I screamed, clutching my head. The frustration was suffocating. Even with all the questions eating me alive, the answers remained elusive.I forced myself out of bed, whispering to my reflection, “You came here to work, Aurora. To survive. Get up.”But even as I threw myself into the day's chores, scrubbing floors and polishing silver, I couldn’t shake the weight pressing down on me. Work usually numbed my mind, but today, it failed.Just as I was finishing my last task, I saw Don Vito’s personal maid walking toward me. My chest ti

Chapter 80A war of godsSeeing Tiffany here made my heart sink to my stomach. What is she doing here? Who invited her? The questions swirled in my mind like a storm. But what really tore at me was her familiarity with Peter, which made me feel uncomfortable. When she wrapped her arms around him and called him “baby,” my chest tightened painfully. Were they together now? What if after I left, Peter moved on… to her?, and why are they here in this party?. I swallowed hard, my mind racing, my heart pounding. I wanted to say something, anything, but I couldn’t risk Tiffany recognizing me. Beneath my mask, I scoffed bitterly. “Baby,” indeed, in response to Tiffany calling Peter baby. “Nothing,” Peter said to her, his tone strained, his body stiff. I could tell he was uncomfortable, but it did little to soothe the ache in my chest. The tension in the room was suffocating, every one in the ball room fixes their eyes on us, as if we were a prized possession, patiently waiting for what wou

Chapter 79Familiar FoeSay something. Say something. I screamed at myself internally, but the words wouldn’t come. My throat was dry, and my heartbeat thundered in my ears as I stared at the three men before me.Damian. Dominique. Peter. Each one was demanding something from me. Damian’s eyes pleaded, his expression almost fragile, a rare sight for someone as domineering as him. Peter looked confused, his gaze searching mine for answers he couldn’t yet find. Dominique, in stark contrast, stood calm and composed, though I knew better. Behind those stormy blue eyes was a tempest waiting to erupt if I didn’t choose him.I had thought this dress would give me power, control over the situation. Instead, it felt like I was losing my breath, piece by piece, under their scrutiny. The air in the ballroom had shifted. It was thick, charged with tension so palpable it made the guests murmur amongst themselves, though no one dared approach. Everyone was watching, waiting for my next move.I ope

Chapter 78Let Fate DecideBy the time the clock struck 6 PM, the mansion was already alive with a steady hum of conversation and soft classical music. Guests had begun filing into the party, their laughter and chatter mingling with the faint clinking of glasses. But I wasn’t ready yet. I had planned it this way, timing my entrance for maximum effect.I stood in my room before the mirror, the steward fussing over my gown and applying the finishing touches to my hair and makeup. My reflection stared back at me: a vision of elegance, power, and allure. My black gown, with its daring high slit and cascading train adorned with shimmering crystals, hugged my body like it was crafted by the gods themselves. My dark hair was pinned into an intricate updo, leaving strands that framed my face perfectly. The mask, a masterpiece of swirling black patterns, lent an air of mystery.“You’ll steal their breath,” the steward said with pride as he stepped back to admire his work."That’s the idea,"
