My hand hovered over the doorknob for a second.
He didn't say come in. He said come here, like I was a disobedient child being summoned for punishment.
I pushed the door open.
Darkness swallowed me whole.
No lights. No windows glowing. No sound except my own ragged breathing and the soft scent of expensive cologne mixed with something darker underneath, something that made my thighs clench.
"Hello?" My voice cracked, embarrassingly small in the silence.
I pressed my palm to the wall, searching desperately for a light switch. I didn't feel anything. What kind of billionaire penthouse had no fucking switches?
My fingers brushed smooth marble, cool wood, nothing helpful. "Um... Hello?—"
A sharp clap cracked through the darkness.
Instantly, warm golden lights bloomed around the room, slow and deliberate, like a stage reveal designed to make me feel exactly as small and powerless as I was.
I froze.
On the far side of the office, lounging in a deep leather chair like he owned the world and everyone in it, sat Jade Black.
The Devil Alpha.
My new boss.
He didn't look real at all.
Sharp jawline covered in dark stubble. Straight nose. Black hair falling messily across his forehead like he'd just run his hands through it. His white shirt was unbuttoned halfway down, exposing a sculpted chest I absolutely had no business staring at, smooth skin over hard muscle and the edge of a tattoo I couldn't quite make out.
My stomach dropped.
Oh God. He's hot. Too hot. This is the man I'm supposed to work for?
Fuck!
His gray eyes dragged over me like he was cataloging every inch, every curve, every flaw, deciding what to do with his new acquisition. The silence stretched until I felt like I was suffocating in it.
I swallowed hard. "Um... you sent for me."
His gaze continued its slow journey down my body and back up again, taking his time, making sure I felt every second of his attention.
Then, finally, he spoke. His voice was deep and smooth, like something crafted specifically for temptation.
"You're prettier than your photograph."
Heat crawled up my neck, flooded my face. I didn't know what to say to that. Thank you? Fuck you? My brain short circuited somewhere between terror and the unwelcome heat pooling between my legs.
“... okayyy,” the words slipped out.
Okay?! So stupid.
His brows lifted lazily, amused. "You're late."
"I came as soon as I was called,” I spat.
I bit my tongue so hard I tasted copper. What did he mean by I was late. Did he expect me to teleport?
He gestured to the chair across from him with one elegant hand. "Sit."
I sat.
The leather was butter soft, expensive, the kind of chair that probably cost more than my car. I perched on the edge, back straight, hands clenched in my lap.
Jade reached into a drawer and pulled out a stack of papers, sleek and thick, clipped together with black metal. He set them on the glass table between us with a soft thud that felt final.
"Sign."
The single word sent a jolt through my chest.
I reached for the papers with shaking hands. My fingers brushed the top page and I pulled the stack toward me, scanning the first lines.
My stomach tightened into a knot.
"What... is it?" I asked carefully, still staring at the incomprehensible legal jargon.
"An agreement," Jade said, leaning back in his chair, expression completely unreadable.
My heart sank.
I flipped to the pages. House rules. Employer rights. My obligations spelled out in cold, clinical language that made my skin crawl. The document felt endless, twenty pages at least, maybe more.
My breath hitched as I read up to a point that said: “By signing this, you will become Master Jade's private maid.”
Private maid?
That's not what I want to be.
"Here,” I said, pointing to it, “it's says I'll be your private maid.”
My voice was slightly shaky. I steadied it instantly.
“Yes,” he answered coldly.
The way he said it made my heart pound in my throat.
He spoke like this wasn't anything. Like it wasn't my life we were talking about.
“I won't force you to sign it,” he said, eyes burning into mine. “But you will.”
My blood ran cold. The way he said it was simply certain I would obey. Completely confident that whatever he wanted, I would give him.
And the worst part?
Some traitorous part of me already wanted to.
I read to the end.
My hand trembled as I picked up the pen he slid across the table.
I steadied my hand and signed my name in one small, terrified sweep at the bottom of the last page.
The moment my pen left the paper, Jade reached forward and pulled the contract back. His fingers were long, elegant, and they moved with complete confidence as he flipped back through the pages.
“You're smart.” He put the file in the cabinet of his desk and locked it. It clicked with a deadly finality.
Maid.
Private maid.
Images flooded my brain. The clothes in that closet. The short skirts and tight tops. The uniform that screamed exactly what kind of service he expected from me.
His lips curved into something dangerous.
The heat in his eyes told me something dangerous. Told me that this year wouldn't just be about cleaning and cooking and serving dinner. It would be about serving him. His needs. His desires. Whatever the fuck he decided he wanted from me.
"Tomorrow morning at six AM, Lydia will bring you your uniform. You'll put it on. You'll learn your duties. And you'll begin serving me the way a good maid should." His hand reached out, fingers brushing my jaw, sending shivers down my spine. “Do you understand?"
Wow. So this was life now. A sexy bastard's personal maid…things couldn't get any worse.
"Answer me, Aria."
"I..." I swallowed hard. "I understand."
"Good girl."
The words hit me hard. “Good girl” like some pet. I wasn't no pet, and soon he'd learn that.
"Get some rest,” he said as he walked towards the door. “You'll need it.”
My blood ran cold. I didn't even know what to think. What the hell was he talking about? Need it for what?
I stood on shaking legs and walked past him, so close I could feel the heat radiating off his body, could smell that intoxicating scent of cologne and power and danger.
As I stepped into the hallway, his voice stopped me.
"Goodnight, Aria.”
I looked back.
A smirk was drawn across his face.
“Goodnight, Mr. Black”
The door closed.
I stood there in the empty hallway, heart racing.
What had I just gotten myself into.
**ARIA**For a second neither of us moved. His hand was around my wrist, tight, his body half over mine, and his eyes were open but not fully here yet. His breathing was ragged, chest heaving."Elise," he whispered again. My name sat in my throat and did not come out.I don't know why. I should have said it immediately. I am Aria. I am not her. You are dreaming and I am a girl you brought her on contract and you need to let go of my wrist right now.But I didn't.For one terrible second I just let him look at me like that. Like I was something he had lost and found again. Then his eyes focused.Really focused.I watched it happen. The exact moment he came fully back into the room and saw me. Not her. And understood exactly where his body was and exactly how close his face was to mine.He let go of my wrist. But he did not move back.We were face to face in the dark, both breathing too fast.I could feel my heart pounding against my ribs. I wondered if he could feel it too. I realise
**ARIA**He walked like nothing had happened.Like armed men hadn't just broken through his windows and two of them were not on the floor of his corridor. He was probably used to things like this. His cologne reached me suddenly, or I had just chosen to notice it. It was something dark, cedarwood maybe, I couldn't tell as sleep pulled at the edges of my vision.I had to be losing it. How was I sleepy after armed men just shattered glass feet away?He stopped at the end of the corridor and pushed open his door, standing aside for me to enter.I stepped through. The door closed behind us with a soft click that felt like a full stop at the end of a sentence.Wow. He meant it.I was going to be staying here now.I took in the room without staring.Memories flooded back. The humiliation from the last time I was in this room still stung like fresh salt. A day I would never forget. He moved past me toward the desk in the corner."The left side," he said coldly.I looked at the bed. Then at
**ARIA**PERIMETER BREACH DETECTED.I stared at those three words for a full second before my brain caught up with what they meant. Then the alarms went off.My heart slammed against my ribs so hard I thought it'd break through.I scrambled out of bed, hands shaking by my sides, and that was when I heard it. Somewhere in the penthouse, not far, the explosion of glass shattering.A window. My room went dark except for the red emergency light that flickered on above the door.I stood in the middle of the room trying to remember how to breathe. Then my door flew open.It was the security man from yesterday, and he was not the unhurried person of yesterday. He was in panic. It made my blood run cold His eyes moved around my room in one sweep before landing on me."Stay behind me," he said. "Don't speak. Don't stop moving.""What is happ—"He shot me a glance that was enough to make me shut up.He pulled me into the corridor.Every shadow was wrong, the alarms were so loud I could feel th
**ARIA** A knock pulled me out of my daze. I'd been sitting on the edge of the bed for what felt like hours, staring into nothing. I got up and opened up the door. It wasn't Lydia. She was the first person I expected since no one else came here. It was a man. Tall, broad shouldered and unhurried, maybe late thirties. He didn't speak. Neither did I. Slowly, he held out a tablet and a slim silver bracelet without a word. I looked at both. Then at him. "What for?" I asked. He didn't answer me, hands still extended. "I won't just take it from you," I said, like trying to clarify him. Did he think I was some pet or something? He exhaled deeply through his nose. Like I was testing his patience. The audacity. "House security," he said finally. "The bracelet is for your protection. Take it." My breath caught. For my protection? Protection from what? I didn't say it out loud. I simply complied. I took the bracelet from him. It was slim and silver and very pretty. What
**ARIA** The car ride home was the longest of my life. Jade didn't speak. Didn't look at me. I kept my eyes forward and my mouth shut. *Still learning her place.* His voice in my head, smooth and cold and completely indifferent, like I was furniture he'd had to apologize for. Like I was an embarrassing piece of décor. I pressed my nails into my palms and breathed through my nose. The car pulled through the gate, up the private road, and stopped in front of the penthouse doors. I reached for the handle. "My office." Jade's voice cut through the silence without preamble. "Now." He didn't wait for a response. He was already out of the car. I followed. --- The penthouse was quiet and dark except for the soft ambient lighting that came on automatically when we entered. Jade walked ahead without looking back, expecting me to keep up, and I hated that I did. His office was at the end of the east corridor, different from the study I'd cleaned today. Bigger. More intimidating.
**ARIA** I walked downstairs at precisely 7:59. Jade was already waiting. He looked devastating. Black suit tailored so perfectly it might as well have been painted on. Hair styled back, not a strand out of place. Cufflinks catching the light from the chandelier overhead. Everything about him screamed power. His eyes swept over me once, slow and assessing. Then he turned toward the door. "Let's go." I followed behind him without speaking. The limousine was waiting outside, sleek and black and probably worth more than my life. The driver opened the door without a word. Jade climbed in first. I hesitated for half a second before following. The interior was all leather and dim lighting and the faint scent of his cologne. I sat across from him, knees pressed together, hands folded tightly in my lap because I didn't know what else to do with them. He settled into his seat like a king on a throne, one arm draped along the back, legs spread, taking up all the space. The car pull
