Lillian

I glanced at the wall clock, it was 10:55 in the morning. Once again I'll be late for my appointment. I had been going to the hospital for antenatal care on my own. I had to monitor my health and my baby's health.

I lost a few pounds which wasn't good news for a pregnant lady. I've had pains in my abdomen a few times and that's when I knew I had to see the doctor.

I was told the pains were due to emotional stress, and I had to take my mind off anything that would stress me mentally.

So what have I been doing since I divorced my husband?

I would wake up in the morning, do some light stretches, eat a good breakfast then watch TV till noon. I then discovered that I was developing a liking for anime.

I'll sleep once it clocks twelve, and then when the sun comes down, I'll take a walk to a private clinic not too far from where I live to have a chat with my fellow expectant mothers.

Pathetic!

They all smile at me, pretending to show kindness to a single mother like myself. But I looked beyond their masks. They say all the shitty things they heard about me on the internet behind my back.

I wasn't expecting it, I was just scrolling through F******k when I saw a picture of myself with a trashy note attached to it.

Everywhere I go, the mall, along the streets and even in convenience stores. I've become a walking faded star.

They called me a gold digger. Technically, I was, but you know what hurt the most? It was the article I saw saying Zayden divorced me because I was caught in bed with another man. Zayden had all the power to take the article down. I waited but nothing happened. He just let my reputation go down the drain. He let me get treated like some loose slut.

It was so ironic.

I had to laugh. It trended for days. I should have stayed his secretary and picked up the pieces of my life myself.

I won't lie, the thought of terminating the pregnancy occurred to me but I'm not a murderer. I didn't want anything to do with him or his family anymore. I won't kill a child for a mistake I foolishly let my heart make despite the warning signs.

I picked up my purse and headed outside. I'm grateful I listened to Jade and bought this house; who knows where I'd be right now if I hadn't. Probably back on the streets. Thank Goodness, the jewellery shop was completed before this happened.

Although we lost a few customers because of the scandalous article, my jewellery shop was still making sales and I go there three times a week. I had to keep myself busy, I never let my mind wander to Zayden. It was like he never existed in the first place.

I switched offices. I can't afford to be reminded of that scene that almost broke me. I only cried twice. The first when he confessed and the second after the divorce.

The only thing I felt right now was numbness.

I flagged down a taxi and headed for the hospital. The only thing I regretted was letting my heart get involved in our contract and not listening when Aiden warned me. Even his father told me off, Helena too. Jade specifically told me to not fall in love with him and hold on till the contract ends.

I should have listened, but now I'm picking up the pieces all over again.

The checkup was quick. The nurse said I was doing better, the baby was fine but I needed to eat more.

I left the hospital and headed for work. Jade texted me that she'd be over at my place this evening, and I couldn't be happier. I needed the company.

She's been supportive; she didn't say I told you so, and I was grateful to Nico for letting her stay a few days with me after I left Zayden's house.

There were more customers today, some taking pictures, others gawking at the new collection I ordered from Italy. I went into my new office, went through my sales report and finalised my next budget.

A knock interrupted me." Come in."

Rowan, my sales clerk, opened the door halfway." You have a visitor ma'am."

" Let them in."

The door closed, and then seconds later, it opened again, and Someone walked through it.

I didn't bother looking up, thinking it was just a customer that needed personal assistance." How can I help you?"

" Hello, lillan. It's been a while." He cleared his throat.

I raised my eyes to meet his." Yeah, it's been quite a while."

He flashed a smile but I didn't smile back. He was someone I thought of as a friend despite his jealousy and then he ditched me because I married his brother.

" What are you doing here?" I kept the tone of my voice formal.

He offered himself a seat." I came to say Hi. You don't have to be so stern."

" Alright then. You've said it, you can leave." I retorted.

He stuttered." I know you feel mad at me for some reason, which I'm aware of, but you can't blame me."

I raised a brow." I can't blame you? We were friends and then you ignored me because I chose your brother over you."

Aiden chuckled." And where did I get you?"

I shut my mouth, my chest squeezing violently.

He sighed." I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that but I did warn you. As for that article going around, I'll have it brought down today."

I only nodded." Thanks. Why are you really here?"

He remained silent for a few moments before finally speaking up." My feelings for you didn't change, Lillian. I only distanced myself because it was for the best."

I snorted." And you think you have a chance with me because Zayden and I broke up?"

He only shrugged." Maybe, maybe not."

I shook my head." Not even the slightest chance. I want nothing to do with anyone bearing Kent as their last name. Not now, not ever"

He sighed, and rubbed his temple." I'm sorry he used you. He was always meant to marry Sage. Their marriage had been sealed since we were teenagers, he was just too stubborn to admit it."

I gritted my teeth, I don't have the luxury to entertain any thoughts of them right now. Just the mention of her name makes me boil in anger. I should have broken her legs that day.

" If you have nothing left to talk about, I'd appreciate it if you left."

He stared at me for a while and then nodded." Alright then, I'll see you soon."

He extended his hands for a handshake; I hesitated but eventually got on my feet and took it.

His eyes fell to my belly instantly and he froze, his eyes widening.

I released a low curse; I was wearing a maternity gown, so my big belly was very noticeable.

His hands tightened around mine." Lillian. You are pregnant! Because that doesn't look like belly fat to me."

I forcefully pulled my hand away and sat back down." Yeah, I am."

He stuttered." Why? Why didn't you and Zayden say anything?"

I closed my eyes taking a breath. I've started getting a headache because of all this long talk." Because I was too stupid to realize that Zayden wanted us to keep it a secret because he already got some other bitch pregnant."

I saw his eyes widening a fraction, his eyes landing on my belly again. He then scoffed." Of course, I expect nothing less from him. He has two women pregnant for him. He's going to make history."

And then in the blink of an eye, he left. I returned back to work but Aiden successfully ruined my day.

I tried, I tried so hard not to think of him, but I failed, and my eyes began to sting again. My chest began to hurt and the headache was getting worse.

I immediately retired home; there's no use trying to work if everywhere I look, I see those grey eyes filled with regret and longing.

Jade came over soon and we both sat to watch a movie while she massaged my swollen foot.

" Have you checked the news lately?" She whispered.

I shook my head." I prefer anime."

She sighed."Sorry to bring this up but I thought you should know."

My heart began racing, I knew it was concerning him.

" They're both getting married, on Saturday, that's tomorrow." She chuckled." Pathetic! And Zayden? He's not okay. I went over to his place today and gave him a few punches for hurting you, but he was already looking drained. Your absence really had a huge effect on him."

I remained unmoving, clutching the pillow to hide how violently my fingers were trembling. I remember Zayden telling me that his dad would put him in jail if he didn't marry Sage. And how he said he loved me more than anything in the world.

" Yeah, pathetic." I managed to let out.

Jade squeezed my hand." Do you want us to ruin the wedding, he doesn't deserve to be happy."

I chuckled." Trust me, he's not going to show up for the wedding. And he's never going to be happy, I am his happiness"

She raised a brow." Go girl! That's right, he shouldn't be not after he fucked another woman."

She smiled at me, and I smiled back and then relaxed further onto the couch.

I raised the pillow to cover half my face as a tear slipped out of my eyelid.

Great!

Now I'm going to cry.

Jade couldn't stay the night because Nico kept calling. He was becoming very clingy and she informed me that she suspected he was going to propose soon. She found a ring box in his bag while cleaning.

I was happy for her.

She left when it was getting late and I stood at the door watching the taxi drive away.

I went back to the Living room to switch off the television, and then the doorbell rang.

Thinking it was Jade , maybe she forgot something. I went over and without checking who it was, I opened the door.

I was pushed back forcefully and something came crashing down on my head, destabilizing me.

I landed on my butt, my vision turned blurry. I felt lightheaded, like I was about to lose consciousness and just before my eyes fell closed, I caught sight of a silhouette.

A man.
