The first group session was like the facilitator had explained. It was held in a circular room with large windows and cushions arranged in a semicircle.

There were fifteen people in total, eight women and seven men that frustratingly included Alejandro.

Elise chose a seat near the window where she distracted herself by studying the pattern of clouds, when a movement came to her left side, making her tense up.

She did not need to turn to know who it was, as Alejandro settled onto the cushion beside her.

He didn’t look at her, but she felt the deliberate space he was creating, or rather, maintaining.

“Good morning, everyone.” The facilitator, a woman named Dr. Reyes with silver-streaked hair and kind eyes, smiled at them. “I’m glad you’re all here. I know it wasn’t easy to come.”

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the circle.

“It’s our first actual day in this cohort and I’m so excited for the healing that would come through this. I believe you’ve already been handed the brochure t

That one hit like a physical blow. Elise felt her spine stiffen.“Not because I wanted you gone,” he rushed to clarify, “but because for three weeks, I didn’t have to watch you disappear in front of me anymore. I didn’t have to see you fading and know I couldn’t stop it. The house was empty, but at least I wasn’t failing you in real-time.”His eyes glistened wet, but he quickly blinked them away.“Something I never told you is…” His voice cracked completely now. “I’m terrified you’ll realize you’re better off without me. That the version of yourself you’re finding doesn’t have room for who I am.”Elise’s lips parted, but she held back quickly turning her eyes away from Alejandro. Around them, other couples murmured their truths, while Elise was still shaken even as she tried not to show it, by Alejandro’s truths.Dr. Reyes’s voice drifted across the room. “I believe we are done with the first rounds, now switch.”Elise’s hands were trembling. She pressed them flat against her knees,

The morning Elise agreed to leave Mirafloras, she’d been sitting in Granny Jasmine’s kitchen watching the older woman knead dough with hands that had seen sixty-seven years of life.“You cannot heal what you refuse to touch, my dear,” The woman who had taken her in said without looking up, her voice gentle. “Go to this place. Let them teach you what I cannot.”“You have spent a few weeks with me and I thank the stars every day that I was able to meet a young lady like you. But if I continue to keep you here with me, I fear you might not be able to achieve all of the great things deposited in you.”Elise was not sure how to respond, as she stared at the pamphlet that Granny Jasmine had handed to her, after calling her out to sit with her. “Where did you get this from?” Elise asked, stretching out the pamphlet, but the old woman brushed it away with a light wave of her hand. “My dear, that’s not important now. Just listen to me and attend this retreat.”Unsure how to react, Elise’s lip

Days had passed since Elise left. Long, shapeless days and Alejandro could not help but wonder how exactly air was passing through her lungs, knowing that she had left him behind. Because surviving had become a struggle for him.The house remained the same since she left. The faint scent of vanilla still clung to the hallway. Elise’s favorite mug still rested on the kitchen counter, untouched. But the air felt different and it was pressing down on him like a weight on his chest.Alejandro had tried his best to keep his life moving, at least the effort behind it stopped him from going after Elise and keeping to the part of his promise. He went to meetings, read reports, even signed off new contracts. But none of it felt real. The documents were blurry, the numbers meaningless. Sometimes, he’d catch himself staring at his phone for minutes — no messages, no missed calls — yet he couldn’t stop checking. He hadn’t heard from her. Not once. And he knew that was exactly what she wanted.E

Three weeks had crawled by since the procedure.Outside their home, the world had not stopped. The radio stations still buzzed, markets opened, newscasters still smiled into cameras with the same mechanical ease. Even the seasons had continued their quiet transitions. But for Elise, time had stopped somewhere between those sterile white walls and the day she signed the consent papers. Now she sat in front of the television, her eyes glazed, the low hum of the news echoing in the living room. The brightness from the screen flickered across her face, washing her in pale blue light. Some woman on TV wearing a wide smile was talking about a national conference and the rage on increase in housing rents, while Elise listened. She wasn’t angry that life went on. She didn’t even resent her for smiling. She just couldn’t understand how everything else could be moving so easily when her world had been gutted from the inside out.Her hand drifted to her stomach, almost by instinct. The faint l

The case against Clara Stanton had reached its judgment in less than two weeks.Lucas had stood in court as Alejandro’s representative, barely keeping his composure as the final sentence was pronounced. Not because it was not in their favour. It was. Clara was guilty as it was clear as day. The evidence was enough and Lena’s testimony had sealed it. But somehow, Charles Stanton had managed to manipulate the case in his favour or better put, Clara’s favour, as he took the fall for it.He had managed to convince the court that Clara was merely a minor in the John’s case, and a misguided young woman swayed by psychological instability in the fire incident. And for that reason, the judge hesitated, pitying Clara, who sobbed continuously, as if she had been falsely accused. But judgment had to be passed, and Charles Stanton volunteered himself. Why he did that was unknown. Yet, it was not surprising as he and Margaret had only ever enabled Clara since she was a child. One clear thing w
