Chapter 3

Author: Cat Treats
His mother worked as a live-in housekeeper for the wealthy family next door.

That was the only reason he'd been able to go to school with me.

Leander had studied and worked himself to the bone, all so he could lift his family up as soon as possible.

I also remembered that Brynn had come in through the company's campus recruiting partnership with a local university, as a student from a low-income family.

I'd heard her family was struggling too, and she'd had a hard time landing a job at Kingsley.

If I fired them both now... what would they do?

At that thought, I wiped away my tears.

Forget it. They were both kind of pitiful.

Near the end of the workday, cheers suddenly erupted outside my office.

Right. Today was the day the company paid out year-end bonuses and annual dividends.

I glanced at my phone. Not a single cent had hit my account.

Then Brynn flung my office door open.

"Where's my dividend?" I asked.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Canceled, obviously."

It took me a while to figure out why, so I picked up my phone and called Finance.

"Ms. Kingsley, um... Ms. Foster submitted a new dividend plan. Your entire dividend was split evenly among the employees..."

"Who approved it?"

There were several seconds of silence on the other end before a small voice answered.

"It... it was Mr. Frost who signed off."

Seeing that I knew it was her doing, Brynn let out a careless snort.

"Ms. Kingsley, people say you're shameless, but do you really have no dignity at all?

"What have you done for this company all year?

"Mr. Frost said every cent this company makes comes from everyone's hard work. Why should a parasite like you take credit for what we've earned?"

I bit my lip, picked up my phone, and texted Leander.

"Come to my office."

After a moment, I sent another.

"Come to the chairwoman's office."

It was the first time I'd ever given him an order as chairwoman.

About fifteen minutes later, Leander showed up looking less than pleased.

He'd obviously already heard.

"Brynn was a little impulsive. That's on me.

"I'll make up your dividend out of my year-end bonus.

"That should settle it, right?"

Before I could say anything, Brynn shrieked.

"Leander, why should you?!"

She pointed at me, her voice getting louder and louder.

"Everyone knows the Kingsley daughter's an idiot!

"Kingsley Technologies only survives because of you. Why do you still have to tiptoe around her?

"You've been running things for years. Isn't Kingsley going to end up yours sooner or later anyway?!"

I looked up at Leander.

I thought he'd at least deny it. He'd always denied it in front of other people.

But he didn't.

He just ruffled Brynn's hair with a helpless sigh.

"That's for later.

"Right now, Mabel's still chairwoman."

When he turned back to me, his face had gone cold.

"This is settled.

"And I'd strongly advise you not to tell your parents about today.

"Brynn's new. She acted on impulse."

I looked at him.

"So neither of you did anything wrong?"

Leander huffed in irritation.

"Mabel, I'm not here to argue about who's right."

He pulled out a file and slapped it down on my desk.

"I'm telling you that I just closed the major project the company's going all in on next year.

"If you don't want something trivial to hurt the Kingsleys' business next year, you'll behave."

With that, he walked out with Brynn without a backward glance.

My hurt and sadness vanished in an instant.

All that was left was a slow-burning rage.

I really wasn't smart, so of course Mom and Dad hadn't handed me the Kingsleys' real core businesses and resources yet.

This listed company under my name was basically just how my parents gave me my allowance.

And now Leander had the nerve to threaten me and my family?

The more I thought about it, the angrier I got, so I called Graham Bishop, Dad's longtime assistant.

"The annual board meeting's on Monday. The CEO's term is up, isn't it?

"We can replace him."

I pointed at the financial report on the table."You've been paid every cent of your salary all these years."You got your year-end bonuses. You got your project bonuses."You were the highest-paid person at Kingsley Technologies. You lived in housing the company arranged and drove a company car."Finance has records of exactly how much you've taken from the company every year."Leander's face turned ugly. But I acted like I hadn't noticed and kept going."I never paid you a single cent less just because we grew up together."But you don't actually think that means I'm supposed to hand Kingsley over to you too, do you?"Seriously, stop talking to me about feelings. We really don't have that many."The moment I said it, someone couldn't hold back a laugh. Then, one after another, stifled snickers broke out across the once-tense conference room.Leander was thoroughly humiliated. His Adam's apple bobbed again and again. In the end, all he could do was choke out a single word

His expression slowly froze."Take last year's renewable energy project. You were in such a rush to get ahead of schedule that you added investment without following the company's approval process."Then the project ran into supply chain problems and almost shut down completely. Who fixed that in the end?"I did. I asked Dad to pull some strings and get the supply chain back up and running."I kept flipping."And then there's the overseas order from two years ago. There was a liability clause in the follow-up contract, but you were so eager to land the deal that you had Legal sign it right away. Later, the client suddenly changed the delivery terms."If the contract had been enforced as written, the company would've owed over a hundred million in damages. Who negotiated our way out of that?"I looked at Mom."I did. I asked Mom to step in and smooth it over."And there's plenty more."I don't understand this stuff, so I don't really know how to judge your work."But I do kno

Leander was stunned. He tried to explain, but Dad cut him off flat.Mom had already taken the file from Graham."Leander, it's not your turn to talk."We're going to settle everything that happened before today, one thing at a time. Starting with my daughter's dividend for this year."Graham immediately handed over the transaction records."First, Ms. Kingsley's dividend."Under the company bylaws, as the largest shareholder, Ms. Kingsley receives her dividend every year as a matter of standard procedure."This year, it came to $3.08 million."Dad looked up."Who authorized canceling it?"The room instantly went quiet.Brynn's lips went white."It... it was me."Mom gave her a cold look."You?"And what's your position?"Brynn opened her mouth."Executive assistant to the CEO.""Then what gives an executive assistant the right to cancel the chairwoman's dividend?"Brynn was at a loss for words.Graham continued."What's more, that $3.08 million was never hers to gi

The directors who'd looked so sour a moment ago started scrambling to backpedal."Mr. Penrose is certainly impressive.""But no matter how impressive he is, you can't just swap leadership like that.""Mr. Frost has been here for years. His projects, his clients, his connections, all of that needs to be handed over.""For a company this size, if you're going to suddenly replace the CEO, you at least have to give Mr. Frost time for a proper handover. If something goes wrong tomorrow, who's responsible?"Before I could say anything, one director spoke up coldly."If the Kingsleys are going to operate this irresponsibly, then there's no reason for me to stay on as a director."I'm resigning from the board."At that, several other directors went quiet too.It was an obvious threat.I panicked a little, because I really didn't understand any of this.If they actually quit, would something go wrong with the company?Graham didn't so much as raise an eyebrow."Be my guest."The d

The conference room fell dead silent. The next second, Brynn shot to her feet."Mabel!"Her face was twisted with fury."What gives you the right to fire Leander?"You can't even read a financial report! You lie around collecting dividends year after year, a parasite on this company! What right do you have to fire Leander?"The company's on the rise right now, and you're replacing the CEO on a whim? Can you handle the consequences?"Her questions caught me off guard, so I just said it straight."I don't need to understand. I'm the chairwoman, so I have the right to fire him."Leander frowned at me."Mabel, I know as chairwoman you don't need to know how to run the company, but aren't you supposed to be responsible to the board and the entire company?"Your parents only gave you that veto so you'd feel included, since you don't understand anything that goes on here. It was never meant to be taken seriously."You can't just replace the CEO whenever you feel like it. Stop this

The moment the words left my mouth, I actually felt a little sheepish."Mom and Dad are probably still busy and haven't gotten back yet."Could you talk it over with them first for me, Graham...?"Graham didn't even ask why."Mr. and Mrs. Kingsley gave instructions a long time ago."If you feel anyone at the company isn't a good fit, simply replace them."Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief."Then could you line up a suitable candidate ahead of time? They can start on Monday."Monday came in the blink of an eye, the day of the annual board meeting. The directors had just received hefty dividends, and every one of them was beaming."Mr. Frost, this year's numbers are spectacular!""If next year's big project lands too, Kingsley Technologies' market cap could go up again!""You're young and accomplished, Mr. Frost. The company's going to be counting on you to lead it for years!"The way they were acting, they'd practically already crowned Leander as the Kingsleys' futur
