Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
Isabel's POV

The next day, I headed to Chapman Manor. I laid the eight divorce certificates before Elaine. "Mom, Mason and I are divorced again."

She looked at me with undisguised pity and sighed deeply. "He definitely wronged you. You guys were so happy back then. But I promise you it'll be different this time. I've reached out to a couple of doctors, and they all agree the chances of recovery are high."

Elaine slid the name card across the coffee table toward me, her eyes glistening with anticipation. "I'm getting old. All I want is for you two to support each other. He's been recalling some old memories lately—"

I cut her off before she could continue persuading me. "But not any of the memories he shared with me."

I lowered my head and dodged her pitying gaze.

Silence fell in the room for a few seconds before she piped up, "If you leave, and he regains his memories, he might lose his mind as soon as he realizes you aren't around."

That was something Elaine had consistently reminded me of every time Mason and I went through a divorce. Because of those words, I gave in time and again. That was how we ended up remarrying and divorcing eight times.

Before I could respond, I heard a noise at the entryway.

The moment Mason walked in and saw me, his brows furrowed. "Isabel, did you come over here to complain about me to my mom again? Gosh, I drove you out, and you still wouldn't leave me alone.

"Are you seriously so weak that you can't even go on with life without me?"

Elaine's chest heaved violently with anger. She shot to her feet and swung a heavy slap across his face. "Haven't you had enough? How much longer are you going to corner her? Without her, you would've died long ago!"

I sat on the couch, my hands clenched into fists. I couldn't help thinking back to seven years ago.

Mason's marriage to Tiffany had been miserable, to say the least. She basked in all his love while having an affair with another man.

When he found out she had cheated on him, he became the laughingstock among the scions in the city overnight.

When he showed up with his men to confront her, Tiffany had already stolen 1.5 million dollars and disappeared without a trace.

After that, Mason fell into depression. When he was about to jump off a bridge into the river and end his life, I saved him.

"So what? She just wanted money," Mason clapped back, looking stubbornly at Elaine. "I don't care what Tiffany did in the past. I love her, and I could never love anyone else. The last thing I'll do is regret it."

For a moment, all the strength seemed to drain from Elaine's body. She turned to me, her eyes filled with apology.

Mason rubbed his temples before finally lifting his head, as if he were making some kind of compromise. "If you want to remarry me, fine. We'll just get divorced again sooner or later. You'll be the one who gets humiliated, not me.

"You're so desperate to have me, so why don't we go to the city hall right now? This is our eighth divorce, isn't it?"

I smiled bitterly, no longer able to identify the man before me with the Mason I remembered. "I came here today to settle things with your mom. You're free now, Mason."

Mason froze. His hand hanging at his sides trembled before he seemed to realize it. He stared at me in disbelief, then quickly returned to his usual aloofness.

"Are you trying to play hard to get? Too bad, it won't work on me. Well, if you said so yourself. Don't come crawling back to me later."

He practically spat the words through clenched teeth. Ignoring Elaine's attempts to stop him, he threw the things in his hands onto the floor and walked away.

She was so livid she nearly saw stars. "You're going to regret this!"

Isabel's POVThe next time I saw Mason was a year later. My work abroad required strict confidentiality, so there was no way he could've found me so quickly. I never imagined he had recovered his memories, much less tracked me down."Isabel, I'm sorry. We were so happy together. If I hadn't lost my memory, none of this would've happened. It was all my fault."Regret filled him like never before. His words tumbled out as he apologized to me again and again.I had to admit, seeing Mason like this made it feel like we were back to the days when we were in love. But even then, I had lost the strength and courage to love him again.I had seen what he was like when he loved Tiffany. For her, he had done things he never would've done before. Even knowing he was allergic to mangoes, he would still eat a mango pudding she made for him.Even though he was afraid of heights, he had still gone with her to the very top of a Ferris wheel and kissed her there.Faced with my silence, Mason gra

Third-Person POV"Mr. Chapman, has it all come back to you?"Mason ignored whatever the doctor asked and rushed out of the clinic, ordering the driver to take him to Chapman Manor. He pounded desperately on the front door, his voice breaking as he cried out, "Mom, where did Isabel go? I remember everything—I remember it all now! I need to see her! Please, just tell me where she is!"He needed to find Isabel and explain everything to her. When Elaine saw him like this, she was furious with him for being such a fool. It was too little, too late. Her eyes were red with tears."I don't know. After everything you did to her, I didn't have the nerve to ask where she was going."Mason dropped to his knees right there. Tears fell onto the floor as he begged her."Mom, I messed up. Please, just tell me where Isabel is. I didn't remember anything back then. I never would've done those things if I'd known what I was doing."I love Isabel. You know she's the only one I ever loved. She's g

Third-Person POVAfter hanging up, Mason sat there for a long time, unable to collect his thoughts. For the past three years, every time he and Isabel broke up and got back together, it had been because Elaine persuaded them to reconcile. This time, even she had given up, while Isabel had actually left.Mason took a deep breath. For the next few days, he continued taking care of Tiffany at the hospital as usual, though he was distracted the entire time. While peeling an apple, he lost focus briefly and sliced his thumb. Blood immediately welled from the cut. He stared at it blankly, his mind taking him back to the many times Isabel had been injured and bleeding. The doctor said she had a coagulation disorder. Why hadn't he remembered it?That thought startled him. Was that something he was supposed to remember?Noticing the weird look on his face, Tiffany asked, "Mason, what's been on your mind lately? Is it Isabel?"As though caught red-handed, Mason quickly denied it. "No. W

Third-Person POVMason had been waiting outside the operating room for a long time. At last, the light above the door went out, and the attending physician stepped out.He shot to his feet, his voice urgent. "How's she?""She's out of danger now, but she has lost a lot of blood. We'll need to keep her here for a few more days and monitor her."At that, Mason finally let out a breath of relief. His legs gave out, and he sank to the floor. It took him a long time to pull himself together. When Tiffany had been in the accident, he had even thought about dying with her. He knew he had lost some of his memories, but he still remembered her. They met in college. If Elaine hadn't stood in their way, they might've been married by now, maybe even had children together.Mason took a deep breath. When he saw the doctors wheel Tiffany out, he followed them into her room. He took her hand and held it tightly in his palm."Thank god you're okay, Tiffany."After the anesthesia wore off, Tiff

Isabel's POVFor a whole month, I tried contacting Mason. After all, he had my passport and ID. Alas, he was too busy preparing for Tiffany's birthday to even bother with me.It wasn't until the day before her birthday that he finally came home. He had completely wiped clean what had happened a month ago."Tiffany's birthday is tomorrow. She likes a crowd, so she invited you to go racing with us."I paused. Tiffany had been a professional race car driver before she retired. Inviting me along was obviously just an excuse to put me in my place.I refused calmly. "No, thanks."Mason seemed to have anticipated my answer. He pulled my documents from his bag and waved them in front of me. "Aren't you looking for these? Come with us, and I'll give them back. Otherwise…"My expression darkened. I knew he was a man of his word. In the end, I had no choice but to agree.Tiffany's racing event was mostly attended by spoiled scions. The moment they saw me, they acted as if I was some anima

Isabel's POVTruth be told, I couldn't care less if Mason would regret his decision. After expressing my stance to withdraw further treatment, I felt a relief I hadn't felt in a long time.I left Chapman Manor, planning to seek Mason so I could retrieve my passport and ID. They had been in his possession over the years.I had barely reached the corner of the street when a sharp pain exploded across my forehead. Hot blood poured from the wound.Dizzy and disoriented, I had barely figured out what was happening before a group of people grabbed me and started beating me up."That's her! That's the homewrecker!""Mason and Tiffany are the ones who belong together! She just had to throw herself at him and become the homewrecker!""She's also a disgrace to the legal profession. She spends all day handling other people's divorces when she can't even sort out her own marriage!"The commotion quickly drew a crowd. Instead of helping me, people pulled out their phones and filmed me. I ha
