Chapter 4

Author: Nora Blythe
Isabel's POV

For a whole month, I tried contacting Mason. After all, he had my passport and ID. Alas, he was too busy preparing for Tiffany's birthday to even bother with me.

It wasn't until the day before her birthday that he finally came home. He had completely wiped clean what had happened a month ago.

"Tiffany's birthday is tomorrow. She likes a crowd, so she invited you to go racing with us."

I paused. Tiffany had been a professional race car driver before she retired. Inviting me along was obviously just an excuse to put me in my place.

I refused calmly. "No, thanks."

Mason seemed to have anticipated my answer. He pulled my documents from his bag and waved them in front of me. "Aren't you looking for these? Come with us, and I'll give them back. Otherwise…"

My expression darkened. I knew he was a man of his word. In the end, I had no choice but to agree.

Tiffany's racing event was mostly attended by spoiled scions. The moment they saw me, they acted as if I was some animal at the zoo, laughing and making snide remarks.

"Hey, Mason! Why is your ex-wife still clinging to you? She actually came all the way here for you!"

Before Mason could answer, Tiffany slipped her arm through his and smiled. "Isabel is my guest. It's more fun with a crowd. Besides, she knows how to drive too, so I thought we could all race."

Their mocking voices reached my ears without missing a word.

"She's just a disgraced divorce lawyer. Racing against her would be beneath us."

"I can't believe there are real-life people who actually go through eight divorces with the same person."

My heart sank. I thought about my passport and ID, then finally closed my eyes. "Come on. How are we doing this?"

Tiffany smirked as she bent down and slid into the driver's seat. "It's simple. First one to the finish line wins. But if anything bad happens, well… You can only blame your own luck."

Her last words were so soft that almost no one heard them.

My heart jolted. I instinctively tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

Everything went smoothly once the race began until we reached a turn halfway through.

Tiffany's tires suddenly lost traction. My brakes failed, and I slammed straight into her vehicle, sending my entire car rolling onto its side.

Screams and cries for help erupted around us. My legs were trapped beneath the steering wheel, and shards of glass had pierced my thigh.

I didn't know if the glass had torn an artery, but the blood was oozing for sure.

The racetrack had its own medical team. They quickly treated Tiffany and me before rushing us to the hospital.

The doctor had barely managed to stop my bleeding when Mason came toward me with bloodshot eyes. He slapped me hard across the face, then grabbed me by the collar, his voice breaking with rage.

"Isabel, you did that on purpose, didn't you? Tiffany's still in surgery! If anything happens to her, I swear I'll never let you off the hook!"

But Tiffany was the one who gave me a car with malfunctioning brakes.

My vision was still blurry. All I could see was a few doctors suddenly stepping out of the operating room. "The patient has lost a massive amount of blood and needs a transfusion. The blood bank is running low—"

"Take hers! Use her blood! Please, you have to save my wife!" Mason screamed, grabbing my hand and yanking hard. The force made my wound start bleeding again.

The doctor treating me hurried to stop him. "Absolutely not. She has a coagulation disorder. She nearly severed an artery, and we barely managed to stop the bleeding. If we draw her blood, she could die."

Mason wouldn't listen. He kept bellowing, "Just take it! I don't care if she dies! I only need Tiffany to live!"

I lifted my head and stared at his back.

"Isabel, I just need you to stay alive."

For a moment, I thought I heard Mason's voice from years ago. Due to my coagulation disorder, he had always treated me like I was made of glass.

Once, we had gone hiking and were caught in a landslide. He had said the exact thing to me then.

Now, with his eyes bloodshot, Mason ignored everyone trying to stop him and had my blood drawn anyway. Bag after bag was rushed into the operating room. He then tossed my passport and ID beside me.

I forced myself to stay conscious. Ignoring the nurse who tried to stop me, I took my documents and walked out of the hospital.

This time, Mason and I were truly even.

Isabel's POVThe next time I saw Mason was a year later. My work abroad required strict confidentiality, so there was no way he could've found me so quickly. I never imagined he had recovered his memories, much less tracked me down."Isabel, I'm sorry. We were so happy together. If I hadn't lost my memory, none of this would've happened. It was all my fault."Regret filled him like never before. His words tumbled out as he apologized to me again and again.I had to admit, seeing Mason like this made it feel like we were back to the days when we were in love. But even then, I had lost the strength and courage to love him again.I had seen what he was like when he loved Tiffany. For her, he had done things he never would've done before. Even knowing he was allergic to mangoes, he would still eat a mango pudding she made for him.Even though he was afraid of heights, he had still gone with her to the very top of a Ferris wheel and kissed her there.Faced with my silence, Mason gra

Third-Person POV"Mr. Chapman, has it all come back to you?"Mason ignored whatever the doctor asked and rushed out of the clinic, ordering the driver to take him to Chapman Manor. He pounded desperately on the front door, his voice breaking as he cried out, "Mom, where did Isabel go? I remember everything—I remember it all now! I need to see her! Please, just tell me where she is!"He needed to find Isabel and explain everything to her. When Elaine saw him like this, she was furious with him for being such a fool. It was too little, too late. Her eyes were red with tears."I don't know. After everything you did to her, I didn't have the nerve to ask where she was going."Mason dropped to his knees right there. Tears fell onto the floor as he begged her."Mom, I messed up. Please, just tell me where Isabel is. I didn't remember anything back then. I never would've done those things if I'd known what I was doing."I love Isabel. You know she's the only one I ever loved. She's g

Third-Person POVAfter hanging up, Mason sat there for a long time, unable to collect his thoughts. For the past three years, every time he and Isabel broke up and got back together, it had been because Elaine persuaded them to reconcile. This time, even she had given up, while Isabel had actually left.Mason took a deep breath. For the next few days, he continued taking care of Tiffany at the hospital as usual, though he was distracted the entire time. While peeling an apple, he lost focus briefly and sliced his thumb. Blood immediately welled from the cut. He stared at it blankly, his mind taking him back to the many times Isabel had been injured and bleeding. The doctor said she had a coagulation disorder. Why hadn't he remembered it?That thought startled him. Was that something he was supposed to remember?Noticing the weird look on his face, Tiffany asked, "Mason, what's been on your mind lately? Is it Isabel?"As though caught red-handed, Mason quickly denied it. "No. W

Third-Person POVMason had been waiting outside the operating room for a long time. At last, the light above the door went out, and the attending physician stepped out.He shot to his feet, his voice urgent. "How's she?""She's out of danger now, but she has lost a lot of blood. We'll need to keep her here for a few more days and monitor her."At that, Mason finally let out a breath of relief. His legs gave out, and he sank to the floor. It took him a long time to pull himself together. When Tiffany had been in the accident, he had even thought about dying with her. He knew he had lost some of his memories, but he still remembered her. They met in college. If Elaine hadn't stood in their way, they might've been married by now, maybe even had children together.Mason took a deep breath. When he saw the doctors wheel Tiffany out, he followed them into her room. He took her hand and held it tightly in his palm."Thank god you're okay, Tiffany."After the anesthesia wore off, Tiff

Isabel's POVTruth be told, I couldn't care less if Mason would regret his decision. After expressing my stance to withdraw further treatment, I felt a relief I hadn't felt in a long time.I left Chapman Manor, planning to seek Mason so I could retrieve my passport and ID. They had been in his possession over the years.I had barely reached the corner of the street when a sharp pain exploded across my forehead. Hot blood poured from the wound.Dizzy and disoriented, I had barely figured out what was happening before a group of people grabbed me and started beating me up."That's her! That's the homewrecker!""Mason and Tiffany are the ones who belong together! She just had to throw herself at him and become the homewrecker!""She's also a disgrace to the legal profession. She spends all day handling other people's divorces when she can't even sort out her own marriage!"The commotion quickly drew a crowd. Instead of helping me, people pulled out their phones and filmed me. I ha
