Chapter 8

I woke up with Ethan’s arm wrapped possessively around me, his large hand resting on the soft curve of my belly even in sleep. For one fleeting moment, everything felt safe. Then the memory of the photo from last night crashed back in, and my stomach dropped.

He stirred as I shifted. “Morning, beautiful,” he murmured, voice rough with sleep. His fingers squeezed my curves gently before he sat up. “How are you feeling?”

“Sore. Scared,” I admitted, touching his face. “But better with you here.”

He kissed me slow and deep, like he needed the connection as much as I did. His hand slid under my gown to cup one of my heavy breasts, thumb brushing over my nipple until I gasped. “I hate that I can’t take you properly yet,” he whispered against my lips. “These thick thighs… I want them wrapped around my head so fucking badly.”

A knock interrupted us. It was the head nurse Ethan trusted. “Dr. Black, the discharge papers are ready if you approve. But administration is pushing hard to send her home today.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened. He looked at me. “You’re not fully healed, but staying here is becoming too dangerous. I’ll arrange home care and private security. You’ll come back for follow-ups in my department.”

My heart beat faster. Leaving the hospital meant stepping out of this protected bubble, but it also meant I could return to work soon — back in his orbit every day.

By afternoon, they wheeled me out. Ethan walked beside the chair the entire way, his hand firm on my shoulder. Outside, a black SUV waited with two burly security guards he’d hired. He helped me into the car carefully, his touch lingering on my wide hips as he buckled me in.

“I’ll check on you tonight,” he promised, stealing a quick but hungry kiss before closing the door.

The ride home felt endless. My apartment looked unchanged, but the world felt different now. The security team swept every room before leaving me alone. I tried to rest on the couch, but my mind kept replaying the threats.

Around seven, the doorbell rang. I checked the peephole and saw Ethan. The moment he stepped inside and locked the door, he pulled me into his arms, careful of my injuries but no less intense.

“Missed you too much,” he growled, kissing me hard. His hands roamed down my back to grip my thick ass, squeezing the soft flesh. “Fuck, Lila. This body is mine.”

We moved to the couch slowly. He sat and pulled me onto his lap, facing him. His mouth found my neck while his hands pushed up my shirt, exposing my soft belly and heavy breasts. He groaned, burying his face between them, kissing and sucking like he was starving.

“You’re so perfect,” he murmured against my skin. “So soft and full. I love every curve.” His fingers dug into my thighs, spreading them wider as I ground against the hard length of him through his pants.

We were lost in each other, breathing heavy, when my phone rang. Unknown number. Ethan grabbed it and put it on speaker.

“Enjoy your little doctor while you can,” the distorted voice sneered. “The crash was just the beginning. Stay away from Black and his family secrets or we’ll finish what we started.”

Ethan hung up and cursed. “My father’s moving fast.”

I rested my head on his shoulder, fear tangling with the lingering heat between us. “What are the drug trials about, Ethan? Tell me the truth.”

He sighed and held me tighter, his hand rubbing slow circles on my belly. “My father’s company tested a new painkiller at the hospital. Some patients had severe reactions… a few died. I found out and tried to shut it down, but he covered it up.”

A fragmented memory suddenly hit me. “Wait… that night, after the crash, when the paramedics were pulling me out… I saw something. A black van with a silver logo on the side — the same one I’ve seen in the hospital pharmacy wing. I remember thinking it looked suspicious, like it didn’t belong there. I even told one of the paramedics I was going to report it to the press once I got better. But everything hurt so much, and I was so out of it… I didn’t think about it again until now.”

Ethan’s body tensed beneath me. “That’s why they targeted you. You saw one of their transport vehicles. Wrong place, wrong time.”

I shivered. He rubbed my back soothingly, then my belly, trying to comfort me with his touch. “I won’t let them hurt you. Tomorrow you rest. The day after, we’ll get you back to work in trauma. Under my watch.”

He stayed the night. We didn’t go all the way because of my lingering pain, but he worshipped my body for hours — kissing the stretch marks on my belly, licking and sucking my nipples until I cried out, gripping my thick thighs while whispering how obsessed he was with every soft inch of me. I came twice from his hands and mouth alone, feeling truly beautiful for the first time in years.

But sleep was restless. Every sound outside made me jump.

The next morning he left early for the hospital, promising to call. I spent the day moving around more, testing my leg. By evening, another threat arrived — a text with a photo of my apartment building.

I called Ethan immediately. He sounded furious. “I’m coming over. Pack a bag. You’re staying with me until this is over.”

When he arrived, he kissed me like he hadn’t seen me in weeks. His hands were everywhere again — possessive, hungry. “No more playing it safe at the hospital. When you come back to work, everyone will know you’re mine.”

My heart raced with a mix of fear and excitement. Returning to work meant facing rumors and jealous glances, but it also meant more stolen moments with him.

As we drove to his place that night, I held his hand tightly. The danger was closing in fast, but so was our connection. I just hoped our secret wouldn’t explode before we could fight the real enemy.

    Chapter 186
(Lila’s POV)The morning light came in soft through the secure-wing windows, the kind of pale gold that made everything look temporarily forgiven.I sat on the edge of the bed with my son against my chest, his small body rising and falling in the steady rhythm I had learned to measure my own breathing by. The reports had arrived one after another through the night and into the early hours—Richard dead in prison, Victor dead on a rain-soaked dock, the last of the major threats extinguished by forces none of us had directly controlled. Amara remained behind bars, her eighteen-year sentence untouched. The court filings that had hung over us like a blade had been withdrawn or collapsed under the weight of the originals and the revocation. For the first time since the night of Amara’s arrest, the air in the room did not feel borrowed.Ethan stood near the window with his back to me, phone lowered at his side. He had been quiet since the final confirmation about Victor came thro

Chapter 185Victor black learned of his brother’s death in the back of a moving car, the city sliding past the tinted windows in streaks of wet light. The report came through on a secure line, delivered without ceremony. Richard had been killed in prison—multiple stab wounds, inmates with old grievances, no single name to pin it on. Victor listened in silence, then ended the call with a quiet word of acknowledgment. He felt nothing that resembled grief. Richard had been a liability for years, useful only in the way a flawed tool remains useful until it breaks. What Victor felt instead was the slow, cold recalculation of a man who had spent decades waiting for the board to clear. One more piece was gone. The claim remained. The children remained. The documents remained contested.Or so he still believed.By the time the car reached the private airstrip on the edge of the city, the rest of the news had begun to arrive in fragments. The temporary custody order had been stayed. The revoca

Chapter 184Richard black had always believed the world would eventually bend back in his favor.Even after the arrest, even after the charges stacked high enough to bury most men—conspiracy, witness intimidation, obstruction, the long list of financial crimes and threats that had finally caught up with him—he had sat in the holding cell with the same faint, dismissive smile he once used in boardrooms. Lawyers would find angles. Money would find cracks. Victor, for all his cold ambition, still needed the Langford name intact enough to be useful. Richard had told himself these things the way other men told themselves prayers. The sentence, when it came, was heavier than he expected. Consecutive terms that added up to a number no clever appeal would easily shrink. The judge’s voice had been flat, almost bored, as the years were read out. Richard had only adjusted his cuffs and looked past the prosecution table as if the entire proceeding were a minor inconvenience. They transferred him

(Lila’s POV) I should have known the quiet would not last. My son slept against my chest, small and warm, his breath a soft rhythm I counted without meaning to. The secure wing felt almost safe for the first time—reinforced doors, independent power, officers at both ends of the corridor. Ethan had stepped out only minutes earlier to take Damien’s call about the morning hearing. Sophia breathed evenly in the next bed. For a few fragile moments I let my eyes close. The door opened without warning. I knew the man who walked in before he fully crossed the threshold. The recognition hit like cold water. Dr. Heyes. Not a doctor who had treated me here. Not someone from the hospital staff. A ghost from before everything—before the arrests, before the pregnancies, before Victor. The man who had cornered me in an empty consultation room months ago, who had put his hands where they did not belong, who had pressed me against the wall until I fought free and reported him. The bo

Chapter 182 They moved fast and quiet through the service corridors, the kind of route staff used when they did not want patients to see the machinery of the hospital. Lila walked under her own power, one arm locked around her son, the other steadying herself against the wall whenever the afterpains flared. Ethan stayed at her shoulder. Sophia rode in the wheelchair ahead of them, her face pale but set, the NICU transfer team already coordinating the premature baby’s secure relocation two floors up. The first van never reached the service entrance. Damien’s team intercepted it three hundred meters out. Two unmarked vehicles, no plates, four men inside each. The confrontation was short and controlled. Weapons were recovered. Phones were seized. One of the drivers, under pressure and the clear knowledge that the hospital cameras had already logged their approach, gave up a single useful detail: the vans were a diversion. The real pressure was supposed to come from inside—another temp

Chapter 181The hospital settled into the false quiet of the early hours, the kind that never quite felt safe.Lila remained awake long after Sophia’s breathing evened out in the next bed. Her son slept against her chest in short, restless stretches, one tiny fist curled near his mouth. Ethan had not left the chair beside her. He sat with his elbows on his knees, eyes moving between the door, the monitors, and the soft rise and fall of their child’s back. The earlier exchange with Sophia still hung in the air like smoke that refused to clear, but neither of them reopened it. Some wounds needed time before they could be touched again.Damien’s updates came in low intervals through Ethan’s earpiece. The east wing remained clear. The black SUV had vanished into the city grid with no plates and no usable camera angles after the second intersection. The insider in the security office had stopped smiling. He had asked for water, then for a lawyer, then fallen silent again. Eleanor was still
