Chapter 1

I went over every detail of leaving the country with my assistant, Faith Moreau, then hung up.

A place where nobody knew me. A new identity. At midnight the day after tomorrow, I'd vanish beyond the Romano family's reach.

The lock clicked. Vincenzo came in with the cold still clinging to him and pulled me into his arms as naturally as ever. He smelled of whiskey.

"Who were you on the phone with just now?"

"A supplier for the lab." I set my phone face down on the table. "Just checking the inventory."

He didn't ask anything else. He simply reached out, the way he always did, and pressed his warm palm to my cold cheek. "You spent too long in the cold storage room today. Your body can't handle it. Next time, don't do that work yourself."

Then he tucked a bouquet of salmon-pink myrtle into my arms.

"The day after tomorrow is our fifth anniversary. I've got a surprise ready for you."

I looked down at the flowers. Their petals were bright and delicate, and their scent was light and sweet.

For five years, he'd had fresh myrtle sent to me every week.

I'd always thought he'd gone out of his way to learn what I liked.

It had all been a cruel coincidence.

Only yesterday, I'd found out that Lyla, the woman he'd grown up with and always loved but could never have, adored myrtle more than any other flower.

Every thoughtful thing he'd done for me had been based on what another woman liked.

I breathed in the sweet scent, and my stomach turned. I ran to the sink and threw up.

My throat burned.

"Enora!" Vincenzo frowned and covered my white-knuckled fingers with his rough palm. "Are you okay?"

I looked into his dark, unreadable eyes, and for a moment I couldn't say anything.

"Tomorrow night, the family is hosting a medical showcase on the south side." Vincenzo handed me a tissue, then gave his orders without even asking what I thought. "You don't need to go. Lyla just started as our medical advisor. She can take some of the load off you."

There it was again. "Take some of the load off you."

When Lyla first took the job, he'd talked me into handing over the encryption keys to my lab data. "I don't want you working this hard. Let Lyla handle the management side. Let her take some of the load off you."

His thumb brushed my cheek, and his voice was sweet and coaxing. I couldn't resist.

Later, when Lyla botched a partnership on a Swiss project, he sighed and asked me to step in and smooth it over. "Lyla just got back. She doesn't know how things work yet. If this gets fixed, she can take the project negotiations off your hands from now on."

I couldn't bear to watch him wear himself out over it, his eyes red from several sleepless nights. I pressed my lips together and nodded.

But this time, I wasn't going to go along with it.

"I run the lab," I said, looking him in the eye. "I should be there."

Vincenzo stopped. He came over and pulled my slipping cardigan closed at the collar to keep out the cold.

"There'll be too many people, too many eyes. The family's young recruits and old guard will all be there." His voice dropped. "Don't you want a baby? Stay home and rest."

I let out a short, humorless laugh.

After five years of marriage, I'd put myself through hell trying to get my body ready for a baby, but he always made sure to use protection. I'd told myself the timing just wasn't right. I never imagined he simply didn't want a child with me.

He probably just didn't want me there stealing Lyla's spotlight in front of the Romano family.

"Fine." I smiled calmly and didn't argue anymore.

Vincenzo's shoulders relaxed a little, and something I couldn't read flickered in his eyes.

Maybe it was relief.

Maybe it was guilt.

Maybe it was regret.

It lasted only a second. Then his calm mask returned, and he turned toward the liquor cabinet. The hem of his coat brushed the table, knocking the silver case he never let out of his sight onto the floor.

The case hit the rug, and its lid popped open. An antique pocket watch rolled to my feet.

Vincenzo had told me it belonged to a close friend who'd died in a shootout. That was why nobody was allowed to touch it.

But now the watch he rubbed between his fingers day and night was lying at my feet.

Curiosity got the better of me. I bent down and picked it up.

The fall had knocked the cover partway open, revealing an engraving inside. It wasn't his friend's name.

Just one line, carved in ornate Latin script.

"To Vincenzo. We promised we'd be best friends for life. Yours, Lyla."

I went rigid.

So the so-called keepsake he treasured, the one he wouldn't even let me touch, was nothing but a friend-zone line Lyla had tossed him when she turned him down.

He slept with it under his pillow and carried it with him all day. If I so much as reached for it, his expression darkened.

Without a word, I closed the cover and put the watch back in its case.

In that moment, whatever hope I still had for Vincenzo died for good.

He knew that no matter what he said or how desperately he tried to win one more look from me, it was pointless. For five years, I'd stitched my hopes for him back together again and again despite his coldness and lies. Then, in a single second, I'd ripped those hopes out by the roots and tossed them in the gutter. The ambulance doors were about to close.Julian stood beside me and pulled my c

Enora's POV:It happened too fast. The muddy blade sliced through the air.Julian reached to pull me away, but Lyla was too close.Just as the blade was about to strike, a dark shape lunged in from the side.Vincenzo didn't hesitate. He threw himself over me, shielding me with his back. There was a wet, tearing sound. The blade sank into his back.Vincenzo grunted. One arm was braced beside me, his face inches from mine. I heard his breathing turn rough and ragged.Lyla froze. She stared at the blood on her hands as if she couldn't believe she'd stabbed Vincenzo. Then she screamed and let go of the handle. The two bodyguards tackled her to the ground. Enora's POV:Vincenzo's chest heaved. He approached slowly, as if one wrong step would make me vanish again. But after only two steps, Julian moved in front of me and blocked his view.Julian stood his ground. He hadn't even unbuttoned his suit jacket. He looked completely at ease, but there was no getting past him."Mr. Romano, if you're here for the medical summit, this is a private residence." Julian's voice was calm and firm. "If you're here to make trouble, the police will be here in two minutes."Vincenzo looked past Julian's shoulder at me."Enora, come here."His voice was hoarse. He used the same commanding tone he always had, though now I could hear a faint plea beneath it.I looked at the man I'd spent my youth loving. Now he was as desperate as a gambler who'd lost everything, and all I felt was a faint sense of irony.Even now, he was still giving orders out of habit. That was Vincenzo. I didn't even hate him anymore. I was just tired. Now I knew for certain: I no longer l

Enora's POV:Two years ago, Lyla had stood at the center of that showcase in an expensive white silk gown, a glass in her hand and a crowd around her. She'd smiled sweetly, as if all the light in the world belonged to her. Now, just standing up straight seemed to take everything she had."Happy now?" Lyla glared at me, her eyes bloodshot. "You must be so proud of yourself, Enora, seeing me like this.""Move." My voice was flat. "I'd rather not have security throw you out.""You wouldn't dare!" Lyla shrieked. She reached for my sleeve with a filthy hand, but I stepped aside. Her hand froze in midair, and her face twisted. "This is all because of you! If you hadn't sent those damn emails, Vincenzo never would have thrown me out, and the council never would have frozen everything I own! I was supposed to be the lady of the Romano family!"I looked at her, half out of her mind, and couldn't even bring myself to be angry. It was just absurd."You lost all that because you're a fraud." I cou

Enora's POV:Two years later, the International Medical Summit held its closing dinner at a private estate on the shores of Lake Geneva.I stood in the middle of the banquet hall in a backless wine-red gown, a glass of champagne in my hand. For the past two hours, Julian and I had been presenting the second-generation R-7 clotting agent to 30 of the world's top medical distributors. The room thundered with applause."That presentation was perfect." Julian came over with two glasses of sparkling water and swapped one for my champagne. "Go easy on the alcohol. You've got the experiment review tomorrow."I laughed, took the sparkling water, and sipped it. "We got 12 letters of intent. That's more than we expected.""That's because the Romano family gave up a lot of market share." Julian glanced at the nearby fountain, his voice even. "Ever since the drug scandal two years ago, the council has pushed Vincenzo to the sidelines. I hear all he has left is some small-time business on the south

  • The Don Chose Her, I Left   Chapter 5

Enora's POV:Snow was falling in Geneva when I stepped out of the train station. On the way in, white-capped spires had flashed past the window, a world away from London's endless gray drizzle.I'd booked a train ticket with my private account, not a plane ticket.Vincenzo was used to controlling the skies. He'd be sure to shut down every flight out of the airport first thing. The train would take me across the border and out of his reach. After a week in Geneva, I'd settled into the slower pace. I'd almost forgotten about the lab and the drugs. Then one day, my phone lit up with a local Swiss number I didn't recognize."Good morning, Ms. Visconti." The man's voice on the other end was husky but calm. "Or should I call you the real owner of the R-7 project?"I stopped with my coffee cup halfway to my lips."No need to be nervous. I've seen the data you sent to the Romano council." He chuckled, making no effort to hide his admiration. "The blue iris catalyst was a brilliant idea."Curio
