Chapter 2

Autor: Forest
His frown didn't stop me. “My family has shed enough blood for you. I'm not asking you to pay us back. I'm only asking you to let me go.”

He pressed a hand to my forehead, his voice impatient. “You're still running a fever. You're talking nonsense. Get some rest!”

His voice softened. “Julia, you're the woman I love. I hate seeing you suffer. But Mia is part of this family too, and I care about her.

“She had the same symptoms you did. That's the only reason I gave her the antiserum.

“She isn't as strong as you. You can endure more than she can.”

I looked at him. “And because I'm the Donna, I'm supposed to graciously hand the antiserum that could save my life to your lover?”

He didn't say anything. He just put the wedding ring back on my finger.

“Don't take it off, Julia.

“Tomorrow, I'm hosting a dinner to welcome Mia.

“At dinner, I'm going to announce that she's now part of the family and that she'll serve as my underboss.

“And you're going to host it, as the Donna.”

I was the one who took a bullet and got poisoned for him.

And he wanted me to host a dinner celebrating his lover.

“Nick, what if I don't make it to tomorrow?”

Nick's smile vanished. “Julia, you have changed.

“You've taken bullets for me for years and pulled through every time.

“Do you really hate Mia so much that you'd threaten me with your own death?”

With that, he turned and walked out, telling Luca to take good care of me.

In the middle of the night, Luca got a message from Bruno.

Nick's made men had taken the only dose of antidote Bruno had prepared, claiming they were acting on the Don's orders.

They'd brought it to Mia's room.

Luca told me. I said nothing. I just pushed myself up and got out of bed. “Help me get to Mia's bedroom.”

Seeing how hard it was for me to walk, Luca carried me on his back.

Before we even reached her room, I could hear her and Nick talking.

“You've been so good to me, Don. I'll thank God every day for your kindness.

“This antidote means everything to Julia, but you still brought it to me to clear the last of the poison from my body.”

Nick sounded sincere. “Mia, you know I swore to God that even though I couldn't marry you, I'd treat you better than my wife.”

Mia's voice was choked with tears. “When my father died, he left me in your father's care.”

Nick didn't say anything.

Mia looked at him. “Your father promised mine that he'd take care of me because our families had always been close.

“Before he died, you promised him that you'd take his place and look after me for the rest of my life.

“We grew up together. You said I was your first love. But then you married Julia.”

Nick squeezed her hand. “Mia, I didn't have a choice.

“To secure my position as Don, I needed the Ferraro family's support.

“But you're different from them.”

Their shameless declarations made my stomach turn.

The moment Luca helped me into the room, Mia set down the antidote she had been holding.

“Julia, you're so weak. You shouldn't have come all this way yourself.

“You're the Donna, so the antidote belongs to you. But if you want it, you have to promise me one thing.”

I gave her a cold smile. “Let me guess. You want me to host tomorrow night's dinner?”

Mia gave a soft laugh. “Yes. A dinner to welcome me into the family can't happen without the Donna.

“As long as you do that, I can endure the pain of the poison that's still in me.”

Nick gave me a cool look. “Hear that? Mia is willing to trade the antidote for your blessing. What more do you want from her?”

I looked at her. “I'll go. But give me the antidote first.”

Mia refused, saying she was afraid I'd back out at the last minute. I said nothing and had Luca carry me out.

Just one last time.”Before Paolo could answer, Nick continued. “I know you won't allow it, so I won't set foot in your family cemetery.“I only want to see the estate. Just once.“I once promised her that I'd come to the Ferraro estate and see where she grew up.“I came to keep that promise.”Paolo's voice was calm. “She's gone. Who are you keeping that promise for now?”Nick looked up at him. “Even if she's gone, I want to keep it. Maybe I

After spending six months in exile, Nick rallied a group of men who were still willing to follow him.Nick spoke to the men who had remained loyal. “My mother may have disowned me, but as long as I'm alive, I still carry the Valenti name.“You followed me because I was once the Don of the Valenti family.“I swear I'll rebuild this family.”Nick was full of ambition, but reality hit him hard.He and his men seized a dock and lost it three days later.Dario investigated and discovered that their rival was a new family backed by the Ferraro family. With no other choice, Nick sent Dario to win back his former allies. Two weeks later, Dario called. “Mr. Valenti, we're on our own. No one will help us.“Paolo, the Don of the Ferraro family, caught on to what we were doing two months ago.“He's spread the word. Anyone who helps us will be going up against the Ferraro family.”Desperate, Nick went to see his mother. He sat on the couch across from her and explained how bad things had become. At

The funeral took place without incident. Nobody told Nick about it.He only heard how it went from Dario.Dario said, “Ms. Ferraro was cremated and laid to rest in the Ferraro family cemetery.“Her headstone says...”Nick pressed him. “Says what?”Dario pushed up his glasses. “Julia Ferraro.”Nick's hand froze halfway to his glass. Dario went on. “Mr. Valenti, Ms. Ferraro will never forgive you.“Please pull yourself together. If you want everything she did for you to mean something, you need to reclaim your position as Don.”Nick hung his head. “I know. I'll return to the Valenti estate, beg my mother's forgiveness, and reclaim my place as Don.”Early the next morning, Nick drove back to the estate. When he saw his mother, he knelt before her and lowered his head. “Mother, I was wrong. I came to ask your forgiveness.“I promised Father I'd take care of Mia after he was gone. But that was no excuse for letting her get away with everything.“I killed Mia. I made her pay for what she did

Isabella's people later said that during the three-day wake at the funeral home, Nick questioned everyone who might know where I was. But Isabella had given the order, and no one dared tell him. After the wake, my body was taken to the Ferraro family chapel. Nick didn't find me until the night of my funeral Mass.Nick tried to slip into the chapel disguised as one of the Ferraro crew, but Paolo's men saw through him and stopped him at the door.Nick begged them. “I'm Julia's husband. Let me see her one last time.”“She has nothing to do with you anymore.”In the middle of the standoff, Paolo came out holding a notebook and shoved it into Nick's hands. “Nick, read this carefully. See everything my sister did for you all these years.“And how you treated her.”Nick opened the notebook. It was the diary I had kept for the past five years. The first entry was dated the day after our wedding.“Nick has just become Don. His position is still unstable, and he's meeting with Don Bill Lucchetti

Nick collapsed to the floor and watched them carry me away.Mia wiped her tears and helped him up. “Nick, what do we do? If your family won't recognize you, then I...”Nick said nothing. Isabella came out of the bedroom with Bruno and looked at Mia. “Ms. Conti, you came back at just the right time.”“Isabella, what do you mean?”Isabella looked at her. “A homewrecker who used my son to gain status has no right to address me by name.”Nick instinctively stepped in front of her. “Mother, Julia's death is my fault! It has nothing to do with Mia. Don't take it out on her!”“Take it out on her? Nick, guess what our people found in her bedroom.”Nick froze. “What?”Bruno had stayed at the estate since the night before. He had searched Mia's bedroom and found the antidote. When Bruno held up the vial, Nick stopped breathing for a moment. “Didn't I give this antidote to Mia?”Mia's face went pale, and she began to tremble. “No, that antidote isn't mine.”Bruno pointed to the number on the vial

Nick dropped the wine bottle, and it shattered on the floor. Mia went pale. The whole restaurant went quiet.Nick snapped out of his shock and turned to his secretary. “What did my mother just say?”Dario answered him. “Your mother said Julia is dead and that your marriage ended with her death.“The family no longer recognizes you as its Don.”Nick stared at him. “That can't be true.“Julia has pulled through every attack for years. She won't die now.“She loves me too much. She'd never divorce me.“My mother is old. She's so angry that she doesn't know what she's saying.”Mia clutched Nick's sleeve, too stunned to speak.Nick shook her off, got to his feet, and called Dario over. “Get the driver. I'm going back to the estate.”The car had barely passed through the estate gates when rain began to pour.Nick didn't even wait for the car to stop before he ran into the rain.Every light in the living room was on. Bruno was waiting there, and Nick grabbed him by the shoulders. “Julia... my
