Chapter 1

Penulis: Forest
Nick went still and stared at me as if I were a stranger.

“Julia, you're the Donna, not some little girl. Don't say things like that. It makes our family look bad. People will laugh at us if word gets out.”

Just then, Mia clutched her stomach and gasped in pain.

My voice was cold. “It's just a stomachache. Stop making a scene.”

Stomach cramps were also a symptom of ricin poisoning, but I knew Mia had a history of stomach problems.

Besides, she hadn't even been at the port during the fight. How could she have been poisoned?

Nick hurried over and put his arm around her.

“Still not feeling well?”

Mia shook her head and looked at me.

“I'm fine, Nick! I wasn't poisoned that badly. There was only one dose of antiserum, and if Julia needs it, she can have it back.”

Nick's voice was gentle. “Mia, don't put yourself through that.”

His arm tightened around her.

Only when he looked at me did he frown. “What are you glaring at her for? She already offered to give it back.”

He motioned for his men and Bruno to lift me.

“Julia's been badly poisoned. I won't get any rest if she's in the main bedroom. Put her in a guest room for now.

“Once she's better, she can move back.”

As soon as one of his men pulled back my blanket, Mia took two steps away.

“Don, I feel faint just looking at her.”

Nick frowned. “Mia can't stand the sight of blood. Hurry it up.”

Bruno spoke up. “Don, I've searched everywhere, but there are no stretchers here at the port.

“The Donna can barely walk. We'll have to carry her.”

Nick's voice was cold. “There are shipping crates in the storeroom. Put her in one and take her to the guest room.”

His secretary, Dario Bellini, found a crate.

I was burning up with fever. In a haze, I felt them stuff me inside.

Through the haze, I heard one of his men speak. “Don, the crate won't fit in the passenger elevator.”

Nick replied coldly, “Then use the freight elevator. Hurry up. Don't worry about jostling Julia around.”

They did as they were told and carried me back out of the passenger elevator.

They stuffed me, the Donna, into a freight elevator like a corpse waiting to be dumped after a battle.

Back at the estate, Bruno sat beside my bed and used a scalpel to remove the dead tissue around my wound.

Before he began, I told him, “No anesthesia.”

The dead tissue was spreading, and Bruno's hand trembled as he held the scalpel.

“Donna, the poison has already spread through your system. The fever is just the beginning.

“The antiserum works fastest, but it's not our only option. I'll prepare an experimental antidote and administer it every three days to gradually neutralize the toxin.”

Barely conscious, I asked, “How much time do I have left?”

“Twenty-four hours.”

Before leaving, Bruno gave me medicine for the fever and told his assistant, Luca Moretti, to stay with me. Then he rushed off to prepare the antidote.

My wound had been treated, and my fever had gone down.

I made up my mind and took off my wedding ring.

On our wedding day, Nick had slipped this ring onto my finger in front of his mother.

He'd said he never could have become Don without me and my family.

Inside the band were Nick's initials and our wedding date.

The sweeter the memory had once been, the more it hurt to look at the ring now.

I asked Luca to bring me a jewelry box, then placed the ring inside.

That night, after hearing my fever had broken, Nick came to see me. He smelled like Mia's perfume.

When he noticed the jewelry box on the nightstand, he froze. “Why did you take it off?”

I pushed the jewelry box toward him. My fingers were still trembling, but my voice was steady.

“Nick, I want a divorce.”

Two years later, Nick went to the old Ferraro family home.He had lost a great deal of weight, and most of his hair had turned white. When Paolo returned and saw him, he didn't recognize him. He mistook Nick for a beggar who had wandered in off the street.Nick didn't say anything. He handed Paolo the bullet pendant and the wedding ring.Paolo took them, and when his fingers touched the shell casing, he froze.Over the past two years, Nick had handled the pendant so often that the casing had worn smooth.Nick's voice was hoarse. “I want to see her. Just one last time.”Before Paolo could answer, Nick continued. “I know you won't allow it, so I won't set foot in your family cemetery.“I only want to see the estate. Just once.“I once promised her that I'd come to the Ferraro estate and see where she grew up.“I came to keep that promise.”Paolo's voice was calm. “She's gone. Who are you keeping that promise for now?”Nick looked up at him. “Even if she's gone, I want to keep it. Maybe I

After spending six months in exile, Nick rallied a group of men who were still willing to follow him.Nick spoke to the men who had remained loyal. “My mother may have disowned me, but as long as I'm alive, I still carry the Valenti name.“You followed me because I was once the Don of the Valenti family.“I swear I'll rebuild this family.”Nick was full of ambition, but reality hit him hard.He and his men seized a dock and lost it three days later.Dario investigated and discovered that their rival was a new family backed by the Ferraro family. With no other choice, Nick sent Dario to win back his former allies. Two weeks later, Dario called. “Mr. Valenti, we're on our own. No one will help us.“Paolo, the Don of the Ferraro family, caught on to what we were doing two months ago.“He's spread the word. Anyone who helps us will be going up against the Ferraro family.”Desperate, Nick went to see his mother. He sat on the couch across from her and explained how bad things had become. At

The funeral took place without incident. Nobody told Nick about it.He only heard how it went from Dario.Dario said, “Ms. Ferraro was cremated and laid to rest in the Ferraro family cemetery.“Her headstone says...”Nick pressed him. “Says what?”Dario pushed up his glasses. “Julia Ferraro.”Nick's hand froze halfway to his glass. Dario went on. “Mr. Valenti, Ms. Ferraro will never forgive you.“Please pull yourself together. If you want everything she did for you to mean something, you need to reclaim your position as Don.”Nick hung his head. “I know. I'll return to the Valenti estate, beg my mother's forgiveness, and reclaim my place as Don.”Early the next morning, Nick drove back to the estate. When he saw his mother, he knelt before her and lowered his head. “Mother, I was wrong. I came to ask your forgiveness.“I promised Father I'd take care of Mia after he was gone. But that was no excuse for letting her get away with everything.“I killed Mia. I made her pay for what she did

Isabella's people later said that during the three-day wake at the funeral home, Nick questioned everyone who might know where I was. But Isabella had given the order, and no one dared tell him. After the wake, my body was taken to the Ferraro family chapel. Nick didn't find me until the night of my funeral Mass.Nick tried to slip into the chapel disguised as one of the Ferraro crew, but Paolo's men saw through him and stopped him at the door.Nick begged them. “I'm Julia's husband. Let me see her one last time.”“She has nothing to do with you anymore.”In the middle of the standoff, Paolo came out holding a notebook and shoved it into Nick's hands. “Nick, read this carefully. See everything my sister did for you all these years.“And how you treated her.”Nick opened the notebook. It was the diary I had kept for the past five years. The first entry was dated the day after our wedding.“Nick has just become Don. His position is still unstable, and he's meeting with Don Bill Lucchetti

Nick collapsed to the floor and watched them carry me away.Mia wiped her tears and helped him up. “Nick, what do we do? If your family won't recognize you, then I...”Nick said nothing. Isabella came out of the bedroom with Bruno and looked at Mia. “Ms. Conti, you came back at just the right time.”“Isabella, what do you mean?”Isabella looked at her. “A homewrecker who used my son to gain status has no right to address me by name.”Nick instinctively stepped in front of her. “Mother, Julia's death is my fault! It has nothing to do with Mia. Don't take it out on her!”“Take it out on her? Nick, guess what our people found in her bedroom.”Nick froze. “What?”Bruno had stayed at the estate since the night before. He had searched Mia's bedroom and found the antidote. When Bruno held up the vial, Nick stopped breathing for a moment. “Didn't I give this antidote to Mia?”Mia's face went pale, and she began to tremble. “No, that antidote isn't mine.”Bruno pointed to the number on the vial

Nick dropped the wine bottle, and it shattered on the floor. Mia went pale. The whole restaurant went quiet.Nick snapped out of his shock and turned to his secretary. “What did my mother just say?”Dario answered him. “Your mother said Julia is dead and that your marriage ended with her death.“The family no longer recognizes you as its Don.”Nick stared at him. “That can't be true.“Julia has pulled through every attack for years. She won't die now.“She loves me too much. She'd never divorce me.“My mother is old. She's so angry that she doesn't know what she's saying.”Mia clutched Nick's sleeve, too stunned to speak.Nick shook her off, got to his feet, and called Dario over. “Get the driver. I'm going back to the estate.”The car had barely passed through the estate gates when rain began to pour.Nick didn't even wait for the car to stop before he ran into the rain.Every light in the living room was on. Bruno was waiting there, and Nick grabbed him by the shoulders. “Julia... my
