Chapter 2

Author: Aged
A row of servants knelt in the living room. Dante stood over them with a gun in his hand, coldly demanding to know where I was.

The instant they saw me, relief flooded the servants’ faces, as if they’d just been spared.

Dante let out a breath too. He strode over and pulled me tightly into his arms. “Where did you go? You weren’t answering your phone.”

He sounded anxious, as if he were genuinely afraid I’d suddenly vanish.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Sorry. I went shopping and lost track of time.”

Dante ruffled my hair, his voice softening. “I’m not blaming you.

“Okay, it’s our anniversary today. Come see the gift I got you.”

Dante opened a jewelry box in front of me. Inside was a pair of pendant necklaces.

“The women’s pendant has a chip inside, and the men’s is the receiver. As long as the switch is on, I can hear your voice anytime, like you’re right there beside me.”

The love in his eyes was just as intense as when we first met—and just as obsessive.

I was almost swept away by his devotion.

Maybe he did love me. Maybe the family had pressured him into marrying Gianna.

But just as he was about to fasten the necklace around my neck, his phone rang.

When he answered, the living room was so quiet that Gianna’s voice carried clearly to my ears.

“Dante, I suddenly feel sick to my stomach. I think I might be pregnant.”

Dante didn’t say a word. He hung up. His expression didn’t change, and he finished fastening the necklace before he spoke.

“An important client just showed up. I’ll be right back.”

With that, he hurried out.

I stood there, watching his car drive off into the distance, and the tears I’d held back all day finally fell.

Once, I’d worked up the courage to tell Dante I wanted to have a baby.

He said no.

“Pregnancy is hard and dangerous. I don’t want you taking that kind of risk for me. Having you is enough.”

At the time, I was touched that he cared so much about me.

Looking back now, he just didn’t want a child with me.

I hurried to wipe my tears, and my hand accidentally brushed the switch on the pendant.

Gianna’s tearful voice came through.

“What if I really am pregnant? Are the baby and I supposed to hide from Alina for the rest of our lives...”

I froze. Dante had been in such a rush to get to Gianna that he hadn’t even noticed he’d given me the wrong pendant.

Dante’s low voice came through. “Easy, sweetheart. Let’s wait until the doctor’s seen you.

“Afterward, I’ll take you to the Alderton Estate to clear your head. I’ll take care of everything else. Don’t worry.”

Gianna’s sobs turned into a laugh. “That’s more like it.”

A sharp pain shot through my heart.

Dante had never talked to me about the future. Mostly, he asked me to wait. Wait until things blew over. Wait until he’d dealt with the family. Wait until he wasn’t so busy.

But it didn’t matter. He didn’t have to bother planning my future anymore. Soon, I’d disappear from both their lives.

I didn’t want to hear any more. My fingers found the pendant, ready to switch it off.

But Gianna’s sweet voice came through again.

“I want to do something for Alina myself. After all, I’ve always felt terrible about what happened. Think of it as a good deed for the baby. Okay?”

A chill swept through my whole body, and my fingertips wouldn’t stop shaking.

Dante knew better than anyone how deep a scar that incident had left on me.

No matter what, he shouldn’t let that woman anywhere near me. He’d sworn he wouldn’t.

But after a long silence, he spoke.

“All right.”

I pressed a hand to my chest. It felt like something inside had been ripped wide open.

I turned and walked away. After that, he never showed up in front of me again. On the day of the final, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. The stage lights I hadn’t felt in so long shone down on me, and for a moment, I thought I was back at that performance five years ago.I was afraid the light would come crashing down again. Then I saw Xavier in the audience. And not just him—so many others, including the faces of fans I used to know well.Their eyes were gentle and steady, just like my parents’ had been, as if they were telling me, “One more time.”Suddenly, I wasn’t afraid anymore. The piece I played was Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor.I’d played it countless times. This time, I poured everything I’d lived through and felt over the past six years into the notes. The opening was the day the lies came to light, when I began my silence and my waiting. Then came the dream I’d fooled myself with, a dream where my parents were still alive, the man I loved was by my s

It had been more than six months. He looked much more haggard, his eyes red-rimmed, as if he hadn’t slept in a long time.He stared at me, not even daring to blink, afraid I’d vanish again.“Alina, I’ve been looking for you for so long. Can we talk, please...”From his desperate pleading, I learned that Dante had spent a long time searching for me, using nearly every channel he had. When he spotted my name on the competition list, he immediately followed the lead to Valcourt. But by then, I’d stopped playing on the streets and gone into seclusion to prepare for the competition. On top of that, Valcourt was Xavier’s territory, so Dante never managed to see me.So he flew to Edelheim and kept watch at the airport all night, terrified of missing my flight. It was almost funny. I used to be the one waiting up all night at home for him to come back. Now it was his turn to know how that felt.I lowered my eyes, avoided his gaze, and walked on, pulling my suitcase.“There’s no need

When I arrived in Aurelle, I politely turned down the housing the Ministry of Culture had arranged and rented a small apartment near Place Marchand. From my balcony, I could look out over the bustling square. The streets of Valcourt were full of couples. I walked past them as if passing through another world. For a long time, I kept to myself and hardly spoke to anyone.By the time the burn on my arm healed, I still only knew the same few phrases of Aurellian and had no idea how to start a conversation. But music doesn’t need an introduction.Valcourt drew musicians from all over the world, and they talked to one another on the streets through their own melodies.Their passion was like a contagious flame that slowly melted whatever had frozen inside me.I became one of them.Without my custom Steinway, I played on keyboards and public pianos. The street was my concert hall, and I played whatever came to mind. When the weather was nice, I played Mendelssohn’s “Spring Song.”W

Dante’s first thought was that it was impossible. I didn’t have those kinds of connections, and I had no reason to do it.But the moment the thought crossed his mind, he suddenly remembered how lost I’d looked when I came home on our fifth anniversary. And when he’d brought Gianna back to the villa, how I’d hidden the sadness in my eyes and tried so hard to calmly accept it.Could it be... that I knew something?Dante, who’d never been afraid of anything, felt panic welling up inside him.He forced himself to calm down.“It has to be a system error. Fix it!”With that, he couldn’t sit still any longer. He stormed out the door and sped back toward the villa. He owned plenty of properties, but the only one he’d ever thought of as home was this villa, where we’d lived together for five years. But when he pushed the door open, no one was waiting for him anymore.Everything in the house looked the same, but Dante still noticed that a few pieces of my clothing were missing, and my

Dante took Gianna to Sable Springs and showed her a good time. Whatever she wanted, he bought for her. When she stepped off the private jet, she was on his arm, his men trailing behind them weighed down with shopping bags. She was smiling like she’d won the whole world.“Dante, you’re so good to me. It’s a shame the time went by so fast.”Dante smiled. “Did it?”To him, those three days had dragged on forever. He couldn’t stop thinking about me—whether I was changing the dressing on my burned arm every day like I was supposed to, the way I bent down to water the flowers in the garden, how soft I felt curled up under the covers. All these days, I hadn’t answered a single one of his calls or texts. He figured I was still angry. That’s fine, Dante thought.Soon he’d put an end to all of it and come back to me.Once they were in the car, Gianna looked out the window and frowned. “Dante, this isn’t the way back to the villa.”“I’m taking you somewhere first,” Dante said flatly.Gi

The fire swallowed the whole piano. There’d been too much gasoline. By then it was too late to put out, and even the sprinklers couldn’t keep it down. The thick smoke stung my eyes so badly I couldn’t open them. For a moment, I thought I might as well stay here. With the piano. But Dante came back. He plunged back into the fire, grabbed me, and locked me tightly in his arms. His heartbeat pounded against my back, and his usually steady voice held a panic I’d never heard before.“Don’t you dare leave me, Alina. I won’t allow it!”He was rarely like this. The last time he’d lost control like this was five years ago, when I was carried off the stage. When I woke up again, I was in the hospital. The burn on my arm had already been dressed.Dante sat at my bedside, holding my hand, his eyes full of guilt.“I’m sorry. I panicked earlier and said some things I didn’t mean.”He never let go of my hand, as if he were trying to make up for something. But there was only one thing I wa
