Chapter 1

“I’m sorry, Ms. Graves. There’s no marriage on record for you in our system.

“Mr. Moretti did get married five years ago, but his spouse is Ms. Gianna Romano.”

The sun was blazing down on me, yet I was so cold I couldn’t feel a trace of warmth.

Three days earlier, I’d received a Moretti family meeting record. It said Dante Moretti and Gianna Romano had formally become husband and wife.

The date was five years ago—the same day I married Dante.

I’d assumed the record was a mistake. That was why I’d come to the marriage registry, to prove that I was Dante’s wife.

But the truth was right in front of me. My five years as his wife had been a lie.

While I was still in a daze, a text came in from Dante.

“Something came up at work. I’ll come home and spend time with you as soon as I’m done. Love you.”

I stared at the message on the screen and thought about how, for five years, every text he’d ever sent me had ended with “Love you.”

His love burned so fiercely, as if it had never once dimmed.

When I first met Dante, I was a world-renowned pianist. Tickets to my tours were nearly impossible to get, and cultural ministries from every country competed to invite me.

He was the quietest listener in my audience. He sat in the front row at every single one of my performances.

He told me that the first time he heard me play Chopin, he knew I was the only woman he’d ever marry.

But the Moretti family had long since saved that place for Gianna. She’d taken a knife for Dante and saved his life.

Everyone assumed she’d be the one to marry him.

Yet Dante chose me, a woman who played the piano and had nothing to do with the mafia.

I thought that was love.

I never imagined it was a dream that would last five years.

Almost without realizing it, I took a cab to Gianna’s villa on the outskirts of the city.

Laughter drifted from the garden.

I stepped closer, and through the screen of branches, I saw a scene that broke my heart.

Gianna was sitting on a garden swing, gazing down at Dante, her eyes creased into a smile.

Dante was down on one knee in front of her, opening a silk-lined box.

Inside was an emerald ring.

Gianna covered her mouth, her voice trembling with delight. “Isn’t... isn’t this the ring your family passes down to the Donna? Am I really worthy of wearing it?”

Dante took out the ring and gently slid it onto her ring finger.

“You can have everything.”

I stared at that ring and remembered how, after the stage accident, Dante had canceled the wedding photos and the wedding I’d been looking forward to for so long.

I didn’t even get a plain band.

He’d told me, “Gianna didn’t mean to do it. I owe her my life. I can’t send her to prison.

“But I promise you, from now on, she’ll never appear in front of you again.

“Let’s keep a low profile for now. Once all this blows over, we’ll do the photos and the wedding properly.”

I didn’t trust Gianna, but I trusted Dante.

So I didn’t think twice. I signed the sworn declaration in front of the clerk he’d brought in.

He knelt before me and swore he’d only ever love me.

But now the Donna’s ring belonged to Gianna, and so did the title of his lawful wife.

I watched the two of them kiss in the garden, and the last bit of warmth in my fingertips finally drained away.

Only after Dante’s Rolls-Royce Phantom disappeared at the end of the road did I stumble away from the villa in a daze.

My phone buzzed, and I numbly lit up the screen.

“On my way home. Can’t wait to spend our fifth anniversary with you. Love you.”

I laughed, but tears fell without warning, splashing onto the screen and blurring the words “fifth anniversary.”

That fifth anniversary was his and Gianna’s, not mine.

After the accident, I went through a long stretch of treatment and canceled all my tours.

Dante was the one who got me through those painful days.

He was also the one who, on those same nights, slept beside Gianna.

Now it was time for the fake wife to face reality.

I fought back the sting in my eyes, took out my phone, and opened an email I’d received three days earlier—an invitation from the Aurellian Ministry of Culture to apply for citizenship through its exceptional talent program.

I tapped “Accept.”

A line of text popped up on the screen: Confirmed. All procedures will be completed within seven days.

Seven days from now, Alina Graves would no longer exist in this country.

I turned and walked away. After that, he never showed up in front of me again. On the day of the final, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. The stage lights I hadn’t felt in so long shone down on me, and for a moment, I thought I was back at that performance five years ago.I was afraid the light would come crashing down again. Then I saw Xavier in the audience. And not just him—so many others, including the faces of fans I used to know well.Their eyes were gentle and steady, just like my parents’ had been, as if they were telling me, “One more time.”Suddenly, I wasn’t afraid anymore. The piece I played was Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor.I’d played it countless times. This time, I poured everything I’d lived through and felt over the past six years into the notes. The opening was the day the lies came to light, when I began my silence and my waiting. Then came the dream I’d fooled myself with, a dream where my parents were still alive, the man I loved was by my s

It had been more than six months. He looked much more haggard, his eyes red-rimmed, as if he hadn’t slept in a long time.He stared at me, not even daring to blink, afraid I’d vanish again.“Alina, I’ve been looking for you for so long. Can we talk, please...”From his desperate pleading, I learned that Dante had spent a long time searching for me, using nearly every channel he had. When he spotted my name on the competition list, he immediately followed the lead to Valcourt. But by then, I’d stopped playing on the streets and gone into seclusion to prepare for the competition. On top of that, Valcourt was Xavier’s territory, so Dante never managed to see me.So he flew to Edelheim and kept watch at the airport all night, terrified of missing my flight. It was almost funny. I used to be the one waiting up all night at home for him to come back. Now it was his turn to know how that felt.I lowered my eyes, avoided his gaze, and walked on, pulling my suitcase.“There’s no need

When I arrived in Aurelle, I politely turned down the housing the Ministry of Culture had arranged and rented a small apartment near Place Marchand. From my balcony, I could look out over the bustling square. The streets of Valcourt were full of couples. I walked past them as if passing through another world. For a long time, I kept to myself and hardly spoke to anyone.By the time the burn on my arm healed, I still only knew the same few phrases of Aurellian and had no idea how to start a conversation. But music doesn’t need an introduction.Valcourt drew musicians from all over the world, and they talked to one another on the streets through their own melodies.Their passion was like a contagious flame that slowly melted whatever had frozen inside me.I became one of them.Without my custom Steinway, I played on keyboards and public pianos. The street was my concert hall, and I played whatever came to mind. When the weather was nice, I played Mendelssohn’s “Spring Song.”W

Dante’s first thought was that it was impossible. I didn’t have those kinds of connections, and I had no reason to do it.But the moment the thought crossed his mind, he suddenly remembered how lost I’d looked when I came home on our fifth anniversary. And when he’d brought Gianna back to the villa, how I’d hidden the sadness in my eyes and tried so hard to calmly accept it.Could it be... that I knew something?Dante, who’d never been afraid of anything, felt panic welling up inside him.He forced himself to calm down.“It has to be a system error. Fix it!”With that, he couldn’t sit still any longer. He stormed out the door and sped back toward the villa. He owned plenty of properties, but the only one he’d ever thought of as home was this villa, where we’d lived together for five years. But when he pushed the door open, no one was waiting for him anymore.Everything in the house looked the same, but Dante still noticed that a few pieces of my clothing were missing, and my

Dante took Gianna to Sable Springs and showed her a good time. Whatever she wanted, he bought for her. When she stepped off the private jet, she was on his arm, his men trailing behind them weighed down with shopping bags. She was smiling like she’d won the whole world.“Dante, you’re so good to me. It’s a shame the time went by so fast.”Dante smiled. “Did it?”To him, those three days had dragged on forever. He couldn’t stop thinking about me—whether I was changing the dressing on my burned arm every day like I was supposed to, the way I bent down to water the flowers in the garden, how soft I felt curled up under the covers. All these days, I hadn’t answered a single one of his calls or texts. He figured I was still angry. That’s fine, Dante thought.Soon he’d put an end to all of it and come back to me.Once they were in the car, Gianna looked out the window and frowned. “Dante, this isn’t the way back to the villa.”“I’m taking you somewhere first,” Dante said flatly.Gi

The fire swallowed the whole piano. There’d been too much gasoline. By then it was too late to put out, and even the sprinklers couldn’t keep it down. The thick smoke stung my eyes so badly I couldn’t open them. For a moment, I thought I might as well stay here. With the piano. But Dante came back. He plunged back into the fire, grabbed me, and locked me tightly in his arms. His heartbeat pounded against my back, and his usually steady voice held a panic I’d never heard before.“Don’t you dare leave me, Alina. I won’t allow it!”He was rarely like this. The last time he’d lost control like this was five years ago, when I was carried off the stage. When I woke up again, I was in the hospital. The burn on my arm had already been dressed.Dante sat at my bedside, holding my hand, his eyes full of guilt.“I’m sorry. I panicked earlier and said some things I didn’t mean.”He never let go of my hand, as if he were trying to make up for something. But there was only one thing I wa
