Chapter 4

Author: Aged
Gianna took my silence as a retreat.

She started moving things around the villa as she pleased, changing the wallpaper and the furniture to suit her own taste, all under the pretense of easing my stress.

The way Dante looked at me changed. There was something searching and uneasy in it.

He started holding me more often, asking what I’d done that day and whether I was feeling all right.

“You’ve been quiet lately,” he said.

I nodded. “I’m just a little tired.”

“Then get to bed early.” He brushed the loose strands of hair off my forehead. “If anything’s wrong, tell me.”

I smiled but, in the end, said nothing.

After all, in a few more days, none of this would have anything to do with me.

Gianna liked this villa, and she liked Dante. She could have them both. I didn’t want anything anymore.

There was only one thing I had to take with me: the piano my parents had left me.

During the darkest time of my life, Dante had stayed by my side. But what truly brought me back to the piano bench were the memories that piano held.

My mother sitting beside me on the bench, correcting my hand position. My father standing nearby, smiling and saying, “One more time.”

It was their encouragement that pulled me out of the darkness.

While Dante was busy in his study, I was in the living room figuring out how to take the piano with me when a jumble of chaotic notes suddenly came from upstairs.

I rushed up to the second floor and pushed open the door to the music room. Gianna was sitting at my parents’ piano, slamming her palms against the keys.

“Stop.” My voice was tight.

She didn’t stop. Instead, she gave me a gentle smile. “What’s wrong? It’s been sitting so long it’s gone out of tune. I’m helping you tune it.”

She pounded the keys harder and harder.

“I don’t need your help!” I couldn’t keep from shouting.

“Fine.” Gianna stopped. The gentleness on her face slowly peeled away like a mask.

She took out a can of gasoline, poured it over the piano, and flicked a lighter on.

“Since you don’t need me to tune it, there’s no point keeping this piano around.”

I lunged forward to grab the lighter.

But Gianna suddenly let out a terrified scream. “Alina! What are you doing—”

She fell backward, and the lighter slipped from her hand and landed on the piano. The flames raced along the trail of gasoline, engulfing the entire piano in an instant.

Dante charged in behind me and swept Gianna protectively into his arms.

He knocked me to the floor. My arm struck the burning edge of the piano, and the pain was so sharp it brought tears to my eyes.

But I didn’t care. I scrambled up and grabbed Dante’s pant leg.

“Dante, save the piano. My parents left it to me...”

Just then, Gianna burst into tears in his arms.

“Dante, my stomach hurts so much... I wanted to clean the piano for her, and she just snapped and pushed me... She even tried to set me and the baby on fire...”

Dante held her close and frowned down at me.

“Alina, I know you’ve been under a lot of stress lately, but you can’t treat Gianna like this.”

“I didn’t push her! She started the fire—”

“Enough.” He cut me off. “It doesn’t matter who started the fire.

“I’m getting Gianna out first. She’s pregnant. Nothing can happen to her.”

I clung to his pant leg, my fingers trembling uncontrollably. “But... my parents’ piano is still in here. Please. There’s still time...”

Gianna started crying again.

“Dante, she’s still worried about that piano... All that PTSD of hers is fake!

“I know she’s always hated me. She wants to burn me and the baby to death...”

I shook my head desperately. “That’s not true!”

But Dante’s eyes were filled with deep disappointment and helplessness. “If the piano’s gone, we’ll buy another one. Once we’re outside, apologize to Gianna.

“Don’t make such a disgrace of yourself.”

I froze where I was and let go of his pant leg.

Dante didn’t stay a second longer. He carried Gianna out of the music room.

I turned and walked away. After that, he never showed up in front of me again. On the day of the final, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. The stage lights I hadn’t felt in so long shone down on me, and for a moment, I thought I was back at that performance five years ago.I was afraid the light would come crashing down again. Then I saw Xavier in the audience. And not just him—so many others, including the faces of fans I used to know well.Their eyes were gentle and steady, just like my parents’ had been, as if they were telling me, “One more time.”Suddenly, I wasn’t afraid anymore. The piece I played was Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor.I’d played it countless times. This time, I poured everything I’d lived through and felt over the past six years into the notes. The opening was the day the lies came to light, when I began my silence and my waiting. Then came the dream I’d fooled myself with, a dream where my parents were still alive, the man I loved was by my s

It had been more than six months. He looked much more haggard, his eyes red-rimmed, as if he hadn’t slept in a long time.He stared at me, not even daring to blink, afraid I’d vanish again.“Alina, I’ve been looking for you for so long. Can we talk, please...”From his desperate pleading, I learned that Dante had spent a long time searching for me, using nearly every channel he had. When he spotted my name on the competition list, he immediately followed the lead to Valcourt. But by then, I’d stopped playing on the streets and gone into seclusion to prepare for the competition. On top of that, Valcourt was Xavier’s territory, so Dante never managed to see me.So he flew to Edelheim and kept watch at the airport all night, terrified of missing my flight. It was almost funny. I used to be the one waiting up all night at home for him to come back. Now it was his turn to know how that felt.I lowered my eyes, avoided his gaze, and walked on, pulling my suitcase.“There’s no need

When I arrived in Aurelle, I politely turned down the housing the Ministry of Culture had arranged and rented a small apartment near Place Marchand. From my balcony, I could look out over the bustling square. The streets of Valcourt were full of couples. I walked past them as if passing through another world. For a long time, I kept to myself and hardly spoke to anyone.By the time the burn on my arm healed, I still only knew the same few phrases of Aurellian and had no idea how to start a conversation. But music doesn’t need an introduction.Valcourt drew musicians from all over the world, and they talked to one another on the streets through their own melodies.Their passion was like a contagious flame that slowly melted whatever had frozen inside me.I became one of them.Without my custom Steinway, I played on keyboards and public pianos. The street was my concert hall, and I played whatever came to mind. When the weather was nice, I played Mendelssohn’s “Spring Song.”W

Dante’s first thought was that it was impossible. I didn’t have those kinds of connections, and I had no reason to do it.But the moment the thought crossed his mind, he suddenly remembered how lost I’d looked when I came home on our fifth anniversary. And when he’d brought Gianna back to the villa, how I’d hidden the sadness in my eyes and tried so hard to calmly accept it.Could it be... that I knew something?Dante, who’d never been afraid of anything, felt panic welling up inside him.He forced himself to calm down.“It has to be a system error. Fix it!”With that, he couldn’t sit still any longer. He stormed out the door and sped back toward the villa. He owned plenty of properties, but the only one he’d ever thought of as home was this villa, where we’d lived together for five years. But when he pushed the door open, no one was waiting for him anymore.Everything in the house looked the same, but Dante still noticed that a few pieces of my clothing were missing, and my

Dante took Gianna to Sable Springs and showed her a good time. Whatever she wanted, he bought for her. When she stepped off the private jet, she was on his arm, his men trailing behind them weighed down with shopping bags. She was smiling like she’d won the whole world.“Dante, you’re so good to me. It’s a shame the time went by so fast.”Dante smiled. “Did it?”To him, those three days had dragged on forever. He couldn’t stop thinking about me—whether I was changing the dressing on my burned arm every day like I was supposed to, the way I bent down to water the flowers in the garden, how soft I felt curled up under the covers. All these days, I hadn’t answered a single one of his calls or texts. He figured I was still angry. That’s fine, Dante thought.Soon he’d put an end to all of it and come back to me.Once they were in the car, Gianna looked out the window and frowned. “Dante, this isn’t the way back to the villa.”“I’m taking you somewhere first,” Dante said flatly.Gi

The fire swallowed the whole piano. There’d been too much gasoline. By then it was too late to put out, and even the sprinklers couldn’t keep it down. The thick smoke stung my eyes so badly I couldn’t open them. For a moment, I thought I might as well stay here. With the piano. But Dante came back. He plunged back into the fire, grabbed me, and locked me tightly in his arms. His heartbeat pounded against my back, and his usually steady voice held a panic I’d never heard before.“Don’t you dare leave me, Alina. I won’t allow it!”He was rarely like this. The last time he’d lost control like this was five years ago, when I was carried off the stage. When I woke up again, I was in the hospital. The burn on my arm had already been dressed.Dante sat at my bedside, holding my hand, his eyes full of guilt.“I’m sorry. I panicked earlier and said some things I didn’t mean.”He never let go of my hand, as if he were trying to make up for something. But there was only one thing I wa
