Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Lucky Squash
On the day of the auction, Luca sent a car for me.

The event was jointly hosted by several of Sicily’s most powerful families. The guests came not only to bid, but also to measure their rivals and test old alliances.

Luca was waiting at the entrance.

The moment he appeared, the conversations around him faded.

He reached for my hand, but I pretended not to notice and walked beside him.

Once, I had dreamed of entering an event like this on Luca’s arm. I wanted everyone to see that I was Mrs. Moretti.

Now that it was finally happening, the title meant nothing to me.

Our seats were in the front row.

I was about to sit beside Luca when a familiar voice called his name.

“Luca.”

Viviana approached in a gold gown covered with tiny crystals.

Without asking, she took the seat on his left.

Luca didn’t object.

I sat on his right.

Throughout the auction, Viviana leaned close to whisper in his ear. Occasionally, she laughed, and Luca answered in a low voice.

I kept my attention on the stage.

Then the auctioneer presented a sapphire necklace.

A moonstone rested at the center of the pendant. It looked as though it had been made to match the ring my mother had left me.

I stared at it for a few seconds too long.

Luca noticed.

“Do you like it?”

“A little.”

He raised his paddle.

“Five million euros.”

The price climbed, but Luca continued bidding.

At twenty million euros, no one challenged him again.

“Sold.”

I looked at him in surprise.

It was the first time Luca had ever chosen something for me without being asked.

“Thank you.”

“If you like it, it was worth it.”

An attendant placed the box in my hands.

Before I could lift the necklace, Viviana leaned closer.

“It’s beautiful.”

She looked at Luca and bit her lower lip.

“I like it too. Don’t you remember? You once told me sapphires suited me better than any other stone.”

Luca hesitated.

Then he held out his hand to me.

“Give it to her.”

I stared at him.

“She likes it,” he said. “Let her have it.”

I had held the necklace for less than a minute.

That was all it took for Viviana to claim it.

I closed the box and handed it to her.

“Take it.”

A violent crash came from outside the auction hall.

Gunshots followed.

People screamed as the windows shattered.

Above us, the massive crystal chandelier began to sway.

Someone shouted a warning.

The chandelier tore free from the ceiling.

The crowd scattered.

I tried to move to the right, but several overturned chairs blocked my path.

Luca reacted immediately.

He lifted Viviana into his arms and ran toward the emergency exit.

The chandelier struck the floor where they had been sitting, sending glass across the room.

I dropped to the ground and covered my head.

Shards cut through the back of my dress. Warm blood slid down my skin.

Across the hall, Luca carried Viviana through the emergency exit.

He never looked back.

His instinct had answered the question Viviana asked in his study.

When it mattered, Luca would always choose her.

A medic removed the glass from my back and bandaged the cuts. None were deep enough to require stitches.

Luca never came to check.

When I returned to the estate, I didn’t pack anything else.

Everything was already waiting by the door.

The following morning, our divorce agreement took effect.

At five, I carried the sleeping Sophia downstairs. The sky was still dark as I placed her in the car.

Before getting in, I looked at the estate one last time.

I had spent years trying to turn that house into a home.

Now I felt nothing.

As the car pulled away, Sophia stirred in my arms.

“Mommy, are we going to Boston now?”

“Yes.”

“You get to do your science?”

I smiled.

“I do.”

“And I get to go to my new school.”

She settled against me again.

For the first time in ten years, the life ahead of me belonged to me.

I took out my phone and sent Luca one final message.

The divorce is final. Sophia and I are leaving for Boston. We won’t disturb you again.

For ten years, Luca had left my messages unanswered.

This time, my phone vibrated before our car reached the estate gates.

What divorce?

However, I had underestimated Luca’s determination. That night, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, the person standing outside was exactly who I expected.Luca was holding a large bouquet of roses.Standing under the night sky, he looked exhausted, as if he had traveled a long distance just to see me.“Elena, I just want to talk to you.”I did not invite him inside. At that moment, Xavier walked out from the living room. He was wearing simple home clothes and holding the warm milk he had just prepared. When he saw Luca, he stopped.Luca’s expression immediately darkened. He looked at me in disbelief.“Why is he here?”I did not answer. But Luca seemed unable to accept the silence.“Are you really together?”“When did this happen?”“After you left me? Or was it earlier?”“Elena, tell me this isn’t true.”I looked at him calmly.“It doesn’t matter anymore. What matters is that I’m living well now.”Luca’s eyes slowly turned red.“I can make you live well too.”“I can give you any

Sophia was the first one to notice Luca. After four months apart, she showed no excitement at seeing him again. She did not call him “Daddy” or run toward him as she might have done in the past.Instead, she simply tugged at my sleeve and said calmly,“Mommy, Mr. Moretti is here.”I followed her gaze and looked over.Luca was walking toward us.In only four months, he seemed to have changed completely. The perfectly polished black suits he used to wear were now slightly wrinkled, and faint stubble covered his jaw. He looked nothing like the man who had once controlled every situation around him.His eyes remained fixed on me.Those were the same eyes I had chased for ten years, the eyes that had once made me willing to give up everything just to receive a little warmth from him.But now, all I could see in them was exhaustion and urgency. And strangely, my heart remained completely calm.Luca forced himself not to look at Xavier standing beside me and walked directly toward me.“Elena.

For a moment, Luca wondered if Elena had not actually left.Perhaps everything that had happened was only a misunderstanding.Perhaps she was still somewhere in the estate, simply angry with him and waiting for him to find her.As long as she was willing to come back, he could apologize. He could buy the sapphire necklace again. He could take her and Sophia to the places she had always wanted to visit. There were so many things he could do.So many things he should have done earlier.Luca turned around abruptly, but the hope on his face disappeared the moment he saw who had entered. It was Viviana. Her ankle was still wrapped in bandages, yet she had followed him all the way back, supporting herself against the walls as she walked. When she saw the divorce papers in Luca’s hand, her expression changed slightly.“Luca…”She hurried toward him, her eyes filled with concern.“Elena really left?”Luca did not answer. He only looked at her coldly.Viviana bit her lip and reached out to grab

It was too quiet.By evening, Luca was still sitting in the hospital room, but for the first time, he felt that something was wrong.Normally, by this time, Elena would have already sent him a message. She would ask when he was coming home, tell him about something Sophia had done at school, or simply share some small details about her day that had nothing to do with anything important. But today, his phone remained completely silent.Luca picked it up and opened his conversation with Elena. The moment he looked through their chat history, his expression gradually darkened.Ever since Viviana had returned, aside from the message about the divorce, Elena had not contacted him once. There had been no questions about where he was, no complaints about how little time he spent with her, and no repeated messages asking when he would come home.Luca’s grip on the phone tightened slowly.Only then did he realize that she had already been this quiet for so long. And he was only noticing it now.

In the hospital room, Viviana was leaning against the headboard, her face still pale from the injury. Her ankle was wrapped in thick bandages, and Luca sat beside the bed, quietly peeling an apple for her.At that moment, his phone suddenly vibrated. He picked it up casually, expecting nothing important, but the screen showed only two short messages.[The divorce has been finalized. From today onward, Sophia and I will no longer disturb your life.]Luca’s hand stopped. The next second, he stood up abruptly, and his expression darkened.Viviana caught sight of the messages on his screen. A flash of satisfaction quickly appeared in her eyes, but by the time she looked up again, her expression had already returned to one of concern.“What happened?”Luca didn’t answer. He opened the message again, staring at the words as if he was trying to convince himself that he had misunderstood them. This was not the kind of message Elena would send. For ten years, that woman had chased after him. No
