Chapter 1

The scar along my left temple looked worse under the bathroom's harsh lighting.

I traced the thin line of damaged skin that curved from my hairline down behind my ear, feeling the familiar ridge where the bone had never quite healed right.

Fifteen years and two surgeries later, it still looked like something violent had happened to me.

Because something violent had happened to me.

I pressed my fingertips against the worst part of the scar, where the skull beneath still had that slight depression, and felt that deep ache that never fully went away.

The doctors had warned me I would get migraines when it rained, when the weather was about to get cold and when I was stressed.

They had not warned me that the headaches would come every single time I looked at my husband.

"Isabella, are you alright?"

Vincenzo's voice came from behind me and I spun around.

He stood in the doorway wearing only his dress pants, his hair still wet, concern written across his face.

I quickly brushed my hair forward to cover the scar.

"I am fine, just dropped something."

He crossed the room and pulled me into his arms without asking permission.

His chest was still damp and warm against my cheek.

"You have been so tense lately, maybe we should take a weekend away from the city."

I nodded against his shoulder because what else could I do.

This was our life now, him being attentive and me pretending everything was normal.

We had been married for exactly one year today.

Vincenzo released me and walked to the electric cooker where a pan was already heating.

"Sit down, I am making your favorite for our anniversary breakfast."

He cracked eggs into a bowl and added cream without measuring, moving around our kitchen with easy confidence.

This was the part that confused me most about our marriage.

He genuinely seemed to care about making me happy in these small domestic ways.

He knew I hated cilantro but loved basil, that I needed my coffee at exactly seven fifteen every morning.

He remembered that I got migraines when it rained and would have my medication ready before I even asked.

When I worked late on my art commissions, he would wait up no matter how tired he was.

Last month when I got food poisoning, he sat on the bathroom floor with me for six hours.

My sister-in-law Maria had said I was the luckiest woman in our world to have caught Vincenzo Marchetti's attention.

"Most men in our families treat their wives like expensive furniture," she had whispered at a family dinner.

"But Vincenzo looks at you like you are the only person in the room."

If only she knew the truth.

A sharp knock interrupted the moment. Carlo, Vincenzo's driver and bodyguard, appeared in the doorway. He didn't look at me—soldiers never did unless given permission.

"Boss, the shipment from Napoli arrived early. Dante wants to know where to move it."

Vincenzo didn't even turn around. "Tell him warehouse seven. And Carlo? If he questions me again, remind him what happened to the last man who did."

"Yes, boss." Carlo disappeared as quickly as he'd come.

I watched Vincenzo plate the eggs like nothing had happened. Like he hadn't just ordered something that sounded dangerously close to a threat. This was the duality I lived with—a man who made me breakfast and made people disappear.

I watched him plate the eggs and suddenly I was fourteen again, trapped in a memory I could never escape.

It had been January, the coldest week of the year, and the heating system at Saint Catherine's Academy had broken down.

I was coming back from the library after school when I heard shouting in the north stairwell.

Vincenzo Marchetti and his crew were cornering another student, demanding money he owed.

Back then, Vincenzo was seventeen and terrifying, the eldest son being groomed to take over the Marchetti operations. He already carried himself like a don—shoulders back, chin up, eyes cold and calculating.

He wore his father's signet ring even then, a lion's head in gold that caught the light when he moved his hands.

He wore his school uniform like a costume, everyone knew he barely attended classes.

I should have turned around and left.

But the boy they were threatening was my friend Marco, who had made the stupid mistake of borrowing money for his mother's medical bills.

"Leave him alone, his mother just died, he will pay you back when he can."

My voice had echoed in that concrete stairwell.

Vincenzo had turned to look at me and I saw something cold and dead in his eyes.

"Who the fuck do you think you are, telling me what to do?"

He walked toward me while his friends held Marco against the wall.

"You are that kid whose father works in my uncle's restaurant, right?"

I had nodded, already regretting opening my mouth.

"Then you should understand how our world works better than anyone."

His hand had shot out and grabbed my wrist, twisting it until I gasped.

"When someone owes the Marchetti family money, they pay or they bleed, there are no extensions."

I tried to pull away but his grip was iron.

"And when some nobody tries to interfere in family business, they learn a very permanent lesson."

That was when he shoved me backward toward the stairs.

I tried to catch the railing but my fingers slipped on the frozen metal.

My body hit every concrete step on the way down, the world spinning in sick circles.

The last thing I saw before my head cracked against the landing was Vincenzo standing at the top, watching me fall with complete indifference.

I spent four months in the hospital recovering from a fractured skull, three broken ribs, and bleeding in my brain.

The doctors said I would have chronic migraines for the rest of my life, that the left side of my skull would always be fragile where the bone had shattered.

They had done two surgeries to repair the damage, but the scar would never fade and the bone would never fully heal.

And Vincenzo Marchetti never faced a single consequence because his family owned the school, the hospital, and half the police force. His father, Antonio Marchetti, controlled the dockworkers' union and three of the five port authorities. One phone call from him could make evidence disappear, witnesses recant and charges evaporate like morning fog.

That was the power of the Marchetti name and that was the world I had married into.

"Isabella, you are doing it again."

Vincenzo's voice snapped me back to our kitchen.

He was standing in front of me now, holding a plate of perfectly prepared eggs.

"Doing what?"

"Disappearing inside your head.’’

He set the plate down and tilted my chin up to meet his eyes.

"Tell me what is wrong so I can fix it."

Such genuine concern from the man who had watched me tumble down those stairs without blinking.

I had avoided him completely after that, changed my route to school, made sure we never crossed paths.

We existed in different universes that should never have collided again.

Until two years ago when his mother approached my father at a community event.

"My son Vincenzo saw your daughter Isabella  at church last month and has not stopped asking about her."

My father had been thrilled at the possibility of connecting our family to the Marchettis.

Two weeks later, I was sitting across from Vincenzo at an expensive restaurant for our arranged meeting.

Fifteen years had changed him from a violent teenager into something more refined and controlled.

He wore custom suits now, spoke multiple languages, ran the family's business operations.

When he saw me walk in, I watched his face carefully for any sign of recognition.

But there was nothing except polite interest.

"Isabella , thank you for agreeing to meet me, I know arranged introductions can be awkward."

He had pulled out my chair and ordered wine without asking what I preferred.

Throughout dinner, he was charming and intelligent, asking about my artwork and seeming genuinely interested in my answers.

Never once did he mention our shared past or give any indication he remembered me.

Perhaps I had been so insignificant to him that breaking my body was just another Tuesday.

After that dinner, I assumed it would end there.

But then he started appearing everywhere I went.

At my favorite coffee shop in the morning, at gallery openings I had mentioned attending, even at my goddaughter's baptism.

My parents were ecstatic when he formally asked permission to court me.

"Isabella , the Marchetti family is offering you a life most girls only dream about."

"Vincenzo is educated, successful, and clearly in love with you."

"What possible reason could you have to refuse?"

How could I tell them that their dream son-in-law was the monster from my nightmares?

I was twenty-nine years old, unmarried, still living in my childhood bedroom.

Marriage in our world was about alliances and security, not love stories.

And refusing a Marchetti was not really an option for a family like mine.

So when Vincenzo proposed four months later surrounded by both our families, I said yes.

Now I sat in our home watching him finish cooking our anniversary breakfast.

He plated everything beautifully and brought it to the table with a smile.

"One year married to the most incredible woman I have ever known."

He raised his coffee cup in a toast.

I lifted mine and felt absolutely nothing except that familiar knot of fear in my stomach.

How long before he stopped pretending to be this gentle version of himself?

How long before I saw the boy who watched me fall reflected in my husband's eyes?

And when that moment finally came, would he finish what he started fifteen years ago?

The trial lasted three days and made headlines across the country. Vincenzo Marchetti, once untouchable, now sat in a defendant's cage like any common criminal. The evidence against him was overwhelming. Financial crimes, racketeering, bribery, extortion, and five counts of murder for the agents killed during his arrest. The jury deliberated for less than four hours. Guilty on all counts, life in prison without possibility of parole.I watched the verdict on the news from my small apartment in Sorrento. When they read the sentence, I felt nothing at all.No satisfaction, no relief, just emptiness where something heavy used to be. It was over and that was enough. Two weeks later, I signed the divorce papers at an Italian consulate. I did not ask for money or property or anything that had his name attached to it.I only wanted my freedom and my maiden name back. I drove to the abandoned warehouse district near the docks where Luca had told me to meet him. The air smelled like salt and rust and old fish.I parked and sat there with the engine off staring at nothing. The sky was starting to turn gray with the first light of morning.A black car pulled up beside mine a few minutes later. Luca got out wearing dark jeans and a white shirt. In the pale early light, he looked clean and simple. For a second he reminded me of the quiet boy who used to leave cookies in my desk.I got out of my car and the wind immediately hit me hard.  "Before we do anything else, you need to ditch that car," Luca said.  "Vincenzo probably has it tracked and we cannot risk him finding you."My stomach dropped because I had not even thought of that.  "One of my men will drive it somewhere far from here and abandon it," he continued."That will buy you time before he realizes you are really gone," he finished.  I nodded and handed him the keys without arguing.Luca si

The days that followed were long and suffocating.  Vincenzo grew busier, angrier and more irritable with every passing hour.He came home late every night smelling like cigarettes and expensive whiskey.  The moment he walked in, he went straight to his office and slammed the door.I could hear him shouting into the phone through the walls. His voice was sharp and desperate in a way I had never heard before. He no longer cooked dinner or asked about my day. Now he snapped at me over small things like burned toast or wrinkled shirts.I knew the Costa family pulling their support had hit him hard. And Luca was making moves behind the scenes that Vincenzo could not counter fast enough. His empire was falling apart piece by piece. And he was scrambling to hold it together. But I kept playing my role perfectly. When he was angry, I stayed quiet and brought him coffee. When he looked exhausted, I ran him a bath without being asked. The more I did this, the more he seemed to relax around me.H

After I sent the recording to Luca, he did not reply right away. I knew he needed time to figure out how to use what I had given him.And I needed to keep playing my role perfectly. The wife who believed every lie Vincenzo told her. That evening Vincenzo took me to the restaurant by the water like he had promised. We sat at a table overlooking the harbor and he ordered for both of us without asking. He kept putting food on my plate throughout the dinner."You need to eat more. You are getting too thin," he said gently. His voice was soft, like he was trying to erase the violence from earlier. Like feeding me pasta would make me forget watching him choke a woman.I ate slowly and said nothing. My mind was somewhere else entirely."You are still thinking about this afternoon," he said.I nodded and looked up at him carefully."That woman Valentina. What she said about an arrangement between families. Was that real?" I asked. My voice was quiet and uncertain, like I was afraid of the answ

Valentina's face turned purple as Vincenzo squeezed her throat tighter. Her expensive shoes kicked uselessly in the air while she clawed at his hand."Please... Vincenzo... stop..." she gasped.  The words barely made it past her lips.I could not move or look away. My whole body felt numb and frozen in place.I looked at Vincenzo's face twisted with rage. I saw the cold killing intent in his eyes that he didn’t try to hide. For the first time I saw clearly what lived underneath his masks. This was the same beast that had stood at the top of those stairs fifteen years ago.Vincenzo finally let go and Valentina dropped to the floor. She landed hard on her knees coughing and gasping for air.Tears ran down her face ruining her perfect makeup. She looked up at Vincenzo with pure hatred burning in her eyes."You are going to regret this," she said between coughs. Her voice was raw and damaged from his grip."My father will hear about this," she continued. "And you will lose everything beca
