Chapter 6: The Weight of Submission

Hours stretched into an agonizing blur of silence.

Deprived of any clock or window, Olivia was left alone with her thoughts, a psychological torture far worse than the cold room itself. Her shoulders ached from being pinned above her head for so long, and her ankles felt numb where the heavy leather bound her to the dark wooden posts. Every minor shift of her weight was met with the soft, mocking clink of steel rings.

She spent those hours trying to rationalize the impossible. Salvatore Capone had erased her. He had paid off debts she thought would haunt her for the rest of her life, closed her accounts, and wiped her footprint off the grid like a smudge on a windowpane. The sheer, terrifying reach of his power was overwhelming. She was a business student who understood systems, leverage, and force—and Salvatore was an irresistible object, a force of nature who had simply decided to absorb her into his orbit.

The electronic lock chimed with a crisp, low double-beep.

Olivia’s heart instantly accelerated, hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She fixed her eyes on the doorway as the heavy oak panel swung open.

Salvatore stepped inside. The change in his appearance was subtle, yet it signaled a shift in the evening’s dynamic. He had showered; his dark hair was slightly damp, combed back neatly from his sharp, aristocratic face. He wore a tailored black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, with the sleeves neatly folded twice up his forearms. In his right hand, he carried a long, sleek mahogany box lined with polished brass fittings.

He didn’t speak immediately. He walked to the edge of the bed, setting the heavy wooden box down on the nightstand with a quiet, solid thud.

His hazel eyes swept over her body, taking in her disheveled curls, her flushed cheeks, and the way her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths.

“You haven’t slept,” Salvatore noted, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet room.

“How could I sleep?” Olivia rasped, her throat dry. She tried to maintain a glare, but the exhaustion was seeping through her armor, leaving her voice raw and fragile. “You have me chained to a bed.”

“You are restrained because you proved yourself violent and unpredictable in my vehicle,” Salvatore replied coolly. He walked over to the side of the bed, resting one hand on the footpost. “I do not tolerate unpredictability, Olivia. But I am a fair man. Your behavior during lunch was acceptable, even if it took persuasion. Therefore, you earn a reprieve.”

He pulled a small brass key from his pocket. Moving with deliberate slowness, he unlocked the cuff around her left wrist, then her right.

Olivia instantly pulled her arms down, wincing as the blood rushed back into her shoulders. She rubbed her reddened wrists, flexing her fingers. Before she could even think about moving toward the edge of the bed, Salvatore’s heavy hand rested on her thigh, a firm, grounding pressure that held her firmly in place.

“Do not mistake a loosening leash for freedom, dolcezza,” he warned softly. “Your legs remain bound. If you attempt to kick, strike, or pull away, both wrists go straight back to the iron.”

Olivia swallowed hard, her hand pausing over her wrist. She nodded once, a tense, microscopic movement of her chin. “Okay.”

“Good.” Salvatore reached over to the nightstand and opened the mahogany box.

Inside, resting against plush black velvet, was a set of pristine, custom leather restraints. Unlike the industrial, utility cuffs currently anchoring her ankles, these were crafted from buttery soft, cream-colored Italian leather, accented with polished rose-gold hardware and delicate, intricate stitching. Alongside them lay a soft silk blindfold and a small, silver-handled crop.

The sight of the items made Olivia’s breath catch in her throat. The sheer aesthetics of the tools made them far more terrifying; they weren’t meant to merely break a prisoner. They were meant to groom a possession.

“You are going to learn how to exist in my space,” Salvatore said, lifting the cream leather cuffs from the box. “And the first lesson, Olivia, is sensory discipline.”

“What does that mean?” she asked, her voice trembling as she backed her head into the pillows.

“It means that when you are overwhelmed, you learn to look to me for direction,” he replied smoothly.

He leaned over her, his broad frame blocking out the warm lighting of the room. He picked up the silk blindfold, smoothing the cool, heavy fabric between his fingers.

“No,” Olivia whispered, her instincts screaming as she tried to turn her head away. “No, please. Don’t cover my eyes. Salvatore, please—”

She stopped dead. The name had slipped out of her mouth naturally, desperately.

Salvatore paused, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, intense heat that made her pulse spike for an entirely different reason. A faint, dark smile touched the corners of his lips.

“Say it again,” he commanded softly, his thumb coming up to trace her lower lip.

Olivia’s chest heaved, her wide hazel eyes searching his face for a shred of mercy, finding only an unyielding, possessive wall. “Salvatore,” she breathed, tears threatening to spill again. “Please don’t lock me in the dark.”

“You aren’t in the dark, Olivia. You are with me,” he murmured.

Before she could protest further, he slid the silk band over her eyes. The world instantly vanished, replaced by complete, total blackness. The cool silk pressed gently against her eyelids, smelling faintly of lavender and leather.

Without her sight, her other senses amplified to a terrifying degree. She heard the soft rustle of his shirt as he moved, felt the heavy dip of the mattress as he shifted his weight, and smelled the rich, intoxicating scent of woodsmoke and amber that defined his presence.

“Salvatore...” she gasped, her hands grasping blindly at the duvet beneath her.

“I’m right here,” his voice purred, sounding impossibly close to her ear.

His warm, heavy hand settled on her bare waist, his long fingers spanning the flare of her hip. Olivia flinched at first, but without her vision, every touch felt magnified, sending a sharp, electric shiver straight down her spine. He didn’t force her; he simply held her steady, his palm radiating an immense, grounding heat.

“When you cannot see, you cannot predict,” Salvatore whispered, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, making her shudder violently. “You cannot plan an attack. You cannot look for an escape. You are forced to feel. You are forced to rely entirely on the hand that holds you.”

He reached down to her left ankle, the key clicking smoothly into the metal lock. He unbuckled the heavy black restraint, freeing her leg, only to immediately wrap the supple, cream-colored leather cuff around her skin. The inside was lined with shearling—soft, warm, and utterly comfortable against her skin. He buckled it securely, then did the same to her right ankle.

He didn’t attach the new restraints to the heavy steel posts. Instead, he attached a short, six-inch leather strap between her ankles, tethering them together. She could move her legs, but she couldn’t step, kick, or spread them more than a few inches.

“Sit up,” Salvatore commanded gently, his hands moving to her waist to assist her.

Olivia allowed him to lift her, her movements hesitant and uncertain in the complete darkness. She reached out blindly, her hands landing on his broad shoulders to steady herself. Underneath the fine cotton of his shirt, his muscles were dense and hard as marble. She wanted to pull away, to push him, but her body betrayed her, clinging to his strength as her only anchor in the void.

“Good,” Salvatore murmured, his hand moving up her spine to rest at the base of her neck, his thumb lightly stroking her pulse point. He could feel her heart hammering like a wild engine beneath her skin. “Look at how sweet you can be when you stop fighting the inevitable.”

“I’m not... sweet,” she rasped, her fingers involuntarily tightening on his shoulders. “I hate this. I hate you.”

“Your words say one thing, dolcezza,” Salvatore purred, leaning down until his forehead rested against hers, the blindfold the only barrier between their faces. “But your body is beginning to understand who rules it.”

He slowly reached down, taking her wrists and placing them gently around his neck. Olivia hesitated for a fraction of a second, her mind battling against the terrifying, creeping sensation of comfort his heat provided. But in the pitch-black space behind the silk, overwhelmed and exhausted, her arms slowly locked around his neck.

Salvatore let out a low, satisfied hum that vibrated against her chest. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his hard frame, lifting her slightly off the mattress so she rested entirely in his lap.

“This is your place now, Olivia,” Salvatore whispered into the darkness, his hand gently stroking her dark curls as she rested her head against his shoulder, completely surrendered to his hold. “Safe. Protected. Mine.”

The unbuckling of the brass fittings was a quiet relief, but the weight of her surrender remained heavy in the room.As her arms fell from the wooden headboard, Olivia’s muscles trembled violently from the strain. She couldn’t hold herself up; her strength had completely evaporated, leaving her limp and shivering on the mattress. Before she could collapse into the cold sheets, Salvatore’s powerful arms caught her around her waist and shoulders, lifting her effortless frame into his lap.He didn’t move away. He sat back against the heavy mahogany headboard, drawing her tight against his chest. He pulled the velvet duvet up and around them both, cocooning her bare, burning skin in thick, soft warmth.“Shh, dolcezza,” Salvatore murmured, his deep baritone a low, grounding rumble against her ear. “I have you. It’s over.”Olivia buried her face in the crook of his neck, her chest heaving as silent, hot tears finally spilled over her lashes, soaking into the collar of his open dark shirt. S

The ledger sat open on the mahogany desk in the corner of the master bedroom, its cream-colored pages catching the dim, flickering light from the stone fireplace. Olivia had spent the entire night staring at its dark copperplate script, her eyes tracing the rigid rules over and over until the words burned into her mind like a brand.Obedience. Protocol. Discipline. When the heavy oak doors opened at precisely seven o’clock that evening, Olivia was sitting on the edge of the velvet armchair, dressed in the simple silk robe Salvatore had left for her. She didn’t rise. She couldn’t. Her heart was hammering against her ribs with a frantic, suffocating rhythm that made her fingertips go numb.Salvatore walked into the room with his usual slow, measured grace. He had shed his suit jacket and tie; his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, his sleeves neatly folded back to his elbows. In his right hand, he carried a long, dark velvet box with gold brass latches. He set the box down o

The blue silk dress hung in the walk-in wardrobe like an exhibit in a museum—a liquid drape of deep sapphire that caught the soft recessed lighting of the dressing room. When Olivia put it on, she realized it had been tailored to her exact measurements without a single fitting. It clung to the curve of her waist, fell in a long, unbroken line to her ankles, and left her shoulders and collarbone entirely bare. There were no zippers or buttons she could reach easily; it fastened at the back with a row of small, fabric-covered hooks, requiring her to stretch her sore arms behind her back to secure herself into his chosen armor. At precisely five minutes to six, the electronic lock on her bedroom door chimed, and Lorenzo stepped into the entryway. He offered a respectful nod, his eyes remaining strictly professional.“The Don is waiting in the formal dining hall, Mrs. Capone,” Lorenzo said, gesturing toward the corridor. “If you will follow me.”Olivia didn’t argue. The weight of her sign

The morning arrived not with the gentle rise of sunlight through a window, but with the quiet, mechanical hum of the master suite’s automated blackout shades retracting.Olivia opened her eyes to find the vast room flooded with crisp, northern daylight. She was alone in the king-sized canopy bed, the space beside her cold and undisturbed. For a brief, disorienting second, her mind tried to pull her back to the cramped, noisy dormitory on 112th Street—to the sound of traffic, her alarm blaring for an early library shift, and the aroma of cheap coffee brewing in a communal kitchen. Then she moved, and the sharp ache in her lower body shattered the illusion. She sat up slowly, pulling the velvet duvet tight around her shoulders. On the nightstand sat the dark leather-bound folder Salvatore had left hours before, its brass corners gleaming beneath the sunlight. Beside it rested a silver tray containing a single white porcelain cup of dark espresso and a gold-plated fountain pen.The elect

The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving Olivia alone in a room that felt entirely stripped of air.She remained slumped across the vanity, her lower body numb, her bare skin trembling violently against the freezing marble. The silence in the master suite wasn’t peaceful; it was a vast, heavy void that pressed into her chest until she could barely expand her lungs.Slowly, agonizingly, Olivia pushed herself up with her unmined hands. Her wrists bore deep, angry red indentations from the silk ribbon, the skin tender and hot to the touch. Every muscle in her core protested as she swung her legs over the edge of the vanity, her feet touching the plush rug. The moment her weight hit her feet, a sharp, white-hot ache shot through her pelvis, forcing a soft, broken gasp from her throat. She reached out, her fingers catching the edge of the dark wood vanity to keep from collapsing onto the floor. On the floor beside her lay the remnants of her composure: the silk blouse tossed aside, the fro

He leaned over her, his weight pressing her flat against the vanity. One hand came up to cup her jaw, forcing her face to turn toward the mirror. She saw herself—pale, disheveled, eyes wide with a terror that was rapidly being overtaken by something else entirely.“Look at what you are,” he commanded, his voice low and steady. “This is the woman who thought she could say no to me.”His free hand moved down, his fingers tracing the line of her thigh with a clinical precision that made her skin crawl. He found the center of her heat, his touch unapologetic and firm. Olivia’s breath hitched, her body betraying her with a sharp, involuntary arch.“You’re already reacting,” he noted, his thumb pressing into her sensitive flesh. “Your body is far more honest than your mouth.”He pulled away just as quickly as he had approached, leaving her shivering in the sudden cold.He stood back, watching the way her chest heaved beneath the bare skin of her torso. The silence in the room was absolute,
