The black sedan rolled slowly through the gates of the container terminal, its tires crunching on the wet gravel. Enzo sat in the passenger seat, his eyes scanning the rows of towering steel shipping containers. The docks were quiet, save for the distant cry of seagulls and the low hum of a crane operating near the water. He pulled his mobile phone from his pocket, dialing a number he knew by heart.

"Enzo," a soft, youthful voice answered on the second ring. "You are calling early today. Is everything alright?"

"Everything is fine, Francesca," Enzo said, his tone instantly softening, the hard edge he wore for the syndicate disappearing completely. "I was just checking on you. Did you receive the transfer I sent this morning?"

"I did," his sister replied, a sigh traveling over the line. "Enzo, it is too much. My tuition for the semester is already paid. You do not need to keep sending me money every week."

"You are in medical school, Francesca," Enzo said firmly, looking out the window as a group of dock workers gathered near a warehouse. "Your only job is to study and become a doctor. I will handle the expenses. Do not worry about the numbers."

"I worry about you," she said quietly. "I saw the news about the fire in the eastern district last week. They said it was an accident, but I know who used to own that warehouse."

"It has nothing to do with us," Enzo lied, his fingers tightening on the phone. "The transition is complete. Mr. Marchetti has secured the territory, and the city is stable. Focus on your exams, Francesca. I will call you on Sunday."

"I love you, Enzo," she said. "Please, just stay safe."

"I love you too, little sister," Enzo said, disconnecting the call. He turned to the driver, his face instantly returning to its stone-cold, professional mask. "Get the dock manager out here. We need to verify the manifest for the European shipments before Cassian arrives."

Back at the cliffs, the estate kitchen was filled with the rich, savory aroma of garlic, tomatoes, and fresh basil. Vittoria stood by the large wooden island, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows as she watched Maria prepare the filling for the ravioli. The older woman was mixing ricotta cheese and spinach in a large ceramic bowl, her movements practiced and efficient.

"The trick is to drain the spinach completely, Vittoria," Maria said, handing her a wooden spoon. "If there is too much water, the dough will become soggy, and the ravioli will split when you boil them."

"Like this?" Vittoria asked, stirring the mixture gently.

"Perfect," Maria smiled, patting her arm. "You have good hands for this, child. Your mother taught you well."

"My mother loved Sundays," Vittoria said, a soft, melancholy smile touching her lips. "She used to spend hours in the kitchen, even when we had almost nothing. She said that as long as we had a hot meal on the table, the world outside couldn't touch us."

"She was right," a deep voice said from the doorway.

Vittoria gasped, turning to see Cassian leaning against the doorframe. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white dress shirt rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos of vines and thorns that wrapped around his skin.

"Mr. Marchetti," Maria said, bowing her head slightly. "You are back early from the docks."

"The meeting with the shipping managers was shorter than anticipated," Cassian said, walking into the room. He stopped beside Vittoria, his dark eyes looking down at the bowl of filling. "It smells like my mother's kitchen in here."

"That is because your wife is a natural, Mr. Marchetti," Maria teased, gathering her apron. "She has been helping me all afternoon. I will leave you two to finish the assembly while I check on the terrace setup."

Before Vittoria could protest, Maria slipped out of the kitchen, closing the door behind her. The sudden silence in the room felt heavy, charged with the electric tension that always accompanied Cassian's presence.

"Are you planning to replace my housekeeper, sweet girl?" Cassian asked, a rare, playful smirk touching his lips.

"I was just looking for something to do," Vittoria said, dusting some flour onto the wooden board. "I cannot study all day, Cassian. My brain needs a break."

"I agree," Cassian murmured, stepping closer until his chest brushed her shoulder. He reached out, his long fingers picking up a small piece of the raw dough and rolling it between his fingers. "Let me see how you roll it."

Vittoria took the rolling pin, trying to ignore the warmth of his body behind her. She rolled the dough forward, but her hand slipped, creating an uneven, thick edge.

"You are too tense," Cassian whispered, his hands coming down over hers on the wooden pin. His touch was firm, his chest pressing against her back as he guided her hands forward in a slow, steady motion. "Do not fight the wood, Vittoria. Guide it. Let your weight do the work."

Vittoria's breath hitched in her throat, her body melting instinctively into his solid frame. She could feel the hard muscles of his abdomen against her back, his warm breath fanning her ear. "You are distracting me."

"Am I?" Cassian murmured, his head dipping down to press a soft, lingering kiss to the side of her neck, his teeth gently scraping against her skin. "I thought I was helping you prepare our dinner."

"This is not helping," she whispered, her fingers tightening on the rolling pin as a wave of heat spread through her lower belly. "This is... something else."

"It is whatever I want it to be," Cassian said, his hands sliding up her arms to rest on her shoulders, turning her around to face him. He looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a raw, possessive hunger that made her knees feel weak. "You are mine, Vittoria. Never forget that, even when we are in the kitchen."

"I don't think I could forget even if I tried," Vittoria whispered, her green eyes locking onto his as she realized, with a sudden rush of fear, that she no longer wanted to.

The study doors had not closed completely. Vittoria stood in the narrow gap, one hand still on the frame. She pushed the door the rest of the way open and stepped inside.Cassian was behind the desk. The cream-colored page lay face down in front of him. He looked up the moment she entered and did not seem surprised. Enzo had already gone. The two of them were alone in the quiet room.Vittoria stopped just inside the threshold. Her voice came out steadier than she expected.“What was that letter?”Cassian did not answer immediately. He reached for the page, turned it face up for a second as if confirming the words were still there, then looked at her again. A cold, predatory smile spread across his face. It did not reach his eyes.“An ultimatum,” he said. “The rogue captains want you delivered to a neutral facility for a bloodline vote. They gave me forty-eight hours. After that they plan to call refusal an act of treason.”She felt the floor shift under the ordinary statement of fact.

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Council’s Ultimatum

The afternoon had been quiet enough to feel almost ordinary. In the study the windows stood open to the cool coastal air. Cassian sat behind the heavy desk reviewing a set of revised port manifests when the intercom on the side table crackled once.Enzo’s voice came through, flat and controlled. “Boss, there is a black town car at the main gates. No prior clearance. The driver is requesting delivery of a formal envelope addressed to you by name.”Cassian set the manifest aside. “Verify the vehicle and the driver. If the package is clean, bring it in.”“Already in process.”Three minutes later the study doors opened. Enzo entered carrying a single cream-colored envelope. The dark wax seal on the back was unbroken. His expression was tighter than usual.“They used the old protocol,” Enzo said. “No electronic trail. Hand-delivered under council courier markings. The driver is already off the property.”Cassian held out his hand. Enzo placed the envelope in it and remained standing on the

The study balcony sat high enough to give a clear view of the courtyard garden without being obvious from below. Cassian stood with one hand on the stone railing, the other holding a half-finished espresso that had gone lukewarm.Below him Vittoria sat on a low bench near the white roses, a sketchbook open on her lap. She worked with quiet concentration, pencil moving in short, precise lines as she captured the architectural details of the old stone archway that framed the far end of the garden. He had been watching for nearly twenty minutes. The morning air was cool and clear. The security detail at the outer gate remained visible but unobtrusive. Everything looked ordinary. That was the problem. Ordinary left room for small openings.A plain white courier van appeared at the main gates and stopped at the checkpoint. The driver stepped out with a tablet and a medium-sized cardboard box.One of the perimeter guards checked the credentials, then waved him through to the inner courtyard

The estate library was quiet in the mid-morning light. Vittoria sat at the mahogany desk with her laptop open and the camera angled just high enough to keep the background of bookshelves professional. She had already checked the lighting twice. The dark circles under her eyes were harder to hide. No amount of careful framing erased the tiredness that had settled into her face over the past week. The university portal chimed. Dr. Melissa Aris appeared on screen in her usual office, a wall of reference books behind her and a ceramic mug within reach. She smiled the moment the connection stabilized.“Vittoria. Right on time. How are you holding up?”“I’m fine, Dr. Aris. Ready to go over the latest section.”The professor opened a document on her end and glanced down at it. “Good. I read through the revised pages on the Florentine trade records last night. The structure is stronger. Your analysis of the 1487 tariff adjustments is particularly clear. But I want to talk about the transition

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   A Midnight Confession

The mansion held the deep quiet that only came after midnight. No footsteps in the corridors. Even the ocean against the cliffs sounded muted, as if the dark itself had thickened the air.Vittoria woke from a restless dream with her heart still beating too fast. The sheets on her side of the bed were cool. She turned her head and found the space beside her empty.Cassian stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, a dark shape against the glass. He had not turned on any lights. The only illumination came from the distant scatter of city lights far below the cliffs, faint and cold. His arms were crossed, shoulders set in the posture he used when his mind was turning over something he did not plan to share.Vittoria pushed the covers back and stood. The velvet carpet was soft under her bare feet. She crossed the room without speaking until she was a few steps behind him.“You’re still awake,” she said.“I didn’t feel like sleeping.”She moved closer and stopped beside him, looking out at the

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Flank Vehicle

The container terminal sat under a low gray sky, the air thick with the smell of diesel and wet concrete. Cranes moved slowly along the waterfront, their cables creaking as they lifted another stack of steel boxes from a cargo ship. Enzo stood inside the glass-walled operations office overlooking the main yard, a tablet in one hand and a printed manifest in the other. The lead shipping captain, a broad man named Ruiz who had worked the docks for twenty years, leaned over the same table. He pointed at a column of numbers with a thick finger.“See these three lines?” Ruiz said. “High-value electronics, marked for the northern distribution hub. According to the original contracts they should have cleared through Bay 7 and gone straight up the coastal route. Instead the digital tags show them peeling off toward the western district two nights ago.”Enzo scrolled through the corresponding digital log. The reroute was clean. No alarm flags. No request for authorization. Just a quiet change
