The study was a massive, imposing room that smelled of old paper, leather, and cedar wood. Two walls were lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, while the third consisted of bulletproof glass overlooking the cliffs and the ocean below. Enzo was standing by the large mahogany desk, sorting through a stack of legal folders.

"Good morning, Mrs. Marchetti," Enzo said, bowing his head respectfully as they entered.

Vittoria flinched slightly at the title. "Please, just call me Vittoria."

"That is not how this works, Vittoria," Cassian said, walking behind the desk. "He will address you with the respect your position demands. Enzo, did you set up the secure line?"

"It is ready, boss," Enzo replied, handing a modified black satellite phone to Cassian. "The routing is clean. It is bouncing through three different servers in Europe. Nobody can trace the location of either estate from this call."

"Thank you, Enzo," Cassian said. "Give us the room."

Enzo nodded, casting a brief, polite glance at Vittoria before exiting the study and closing the double doors behind him, leaving the two of them alone in the quiet room.

"Sit," Cassian commanded, gesturing to the leather chair opposite his desk.

"I prefer to stand," Vittoria said, her hands trembling as she stared at the black phone in his hand.

"You will sit, Vittoria," Cassian repeated, his voice dropping to that low, authoritative register that left no room for negotiation. "You are nervous, and your knees are shaking. Sit down before you fall."

Vittoria reluctantly slid into the chair, her fingers clutching the edge of the mahogany desk. "Just call her, Cassian. Please. Don't make me wait any longer."

Cassian dialed the number, his face expressionless as the call went through. He held the phone to his ear for a moment before speaking. "Status."

"The perimeter is clear, boss," a deep voice replied on the speaker. "The guest is in the living room. She is currently having tea."

"Put her on," Cassian ordered, passing the phone across the desk to Vittoria. "You have five minutes. Do not tell her where you are, and do not make her worry. If you panic, I will end the call."

Vittoria snatched the phone, pressing it to her ear. "Mom? Mom, is that you?"

"Vittoria!" Teresa's voice came through the line, frantic and thick with unshed tears. "Oh, thank God. Vittoria, are you alright? Did they hurt you? Where are you?"

"I am fine, Mom," Vittoria said, a sob catching in her throat as she forced herself to stay calm. She looked up and saw Cassian watching her, his dark eyes analyzing every muscle in her face. "I am completely safe. Nobody has hurt me. I promise."

"Where are they keeping you?" Teresa pleaded. "They brought me to this massive house, but there are guards everywhere. They will not let me leave the property. Vittoria, what did that monster do to you?"

"He did not do anything, Mom," Vittoria lied, her fingers tightening around the phone. "We... we had to get married. To protect us both from the syndicate elders. It was the only way to stop them from hunting us."

"Married?" Teresa whispered, her voice cracking with pure horror. "To a Marchetti? Vittoria, his father ordered your father's execution. They are monsters. They do not know how to love. They only know how to destroy."

"Cassian is keeping me safe, Mom," Vittoria said, her voice shaking as she stared at the silver bracelet on her wrist. "He has provided everything we need. You do not have to run anymore. You do not have to live in fear of the shadows. We are safe now."

"I am in fear of what they will do to you, sweet girl," Teresa cried. "You are a Carvelli. The elders will never accept you. They will see you as a threat."

"They have to accept me," Vittoria said, trying to sound confident. "Cassian made sure of that last night. Please, just rest. Take care of yourself. I will call you again as soon as I can."

"I love you, Vittoria," Teresa said, her voice fading slightly. "Please, keep your eyes open. Do not trust his touch."

"I love you too, Mom," Vittoria whispered, her eyes filling with tears.

Cassian reached across the desk, gently taking the phone from her hand and disconnecting the call. Vittoria pressed her face into her hands, her shoulders shaking as she let the tears fall freely.

"She is safe, Vittoria," Cassian said, his voice unusually quiet as he walked around the desk.

"She is safe because I am your hostage," Vittoria sobbed, her hands dropping as he pulled her up from the chair.

"She is safe because you are my wife," Cassian corrected, pulling her against his solid chest. His large hands rubbed her back, his warmth slowly seeping through her knit sweater. "If you were a hostage, I would not care about your tears. Stop crying, sweet girl. You did well."

"I hate you," she whispered, her fingers curling into his shirt anyway, seeking the comfort of his strength despite her words.

"You can hate me all you want," Cassian murmured, his hand cupping the back of her head, pressing her face into his shoulder. "But you will stay safe. And you will stay mine."

Vittoria stood there in his arms, hating how safe she felt in the embrace of the man who had stolen her life. The physical pull between them was undeniable, a dangerous fire that had been lit the moment their eyes met at the club. She knew she was falling into a trap, but as his arms tightened around her, she found herself not wanting to escape.

"Are you finished crying?" Cassian asked, his voice low against her ear.

"Yes," she murmured, wiping her face as she stepped back. "I am finished."

"Good," Cassian said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a clean handkerchief to wipe the remaining tears from her cheek. "We have more business to handle today. Go back to your room and rest. I will have Maria bring you some tea."

"Thank you, Cassian," Vittoria said softly, turning to leave the study.

As she walked out, she could feel his dark eyes tracking her every move, a silent promise that she would never be out of his sight.

The study doors had not closed completely. Vittoria stood in the narrow gap, one hand still on the frame. She pushed the door the rest of the way open and stepped inside.Cassian was behind the desk. The cream-colored page lay face down in front of him. He looked up the moment she entered and did not seem surprised. Enzo had already gone. The two of them were alone in the quiet room.Vittoria stopped just inside the threshold. Her voice came out steadier than she expected.“What was that letter?”Cassian did not answer immediately. He reached for the page, turned it face up for a second as if confirming the words were still there, then looked at her again. A cold, predatory smile spread across his face. It did not reach his eyes.“An ultimatum,” he said. “The rogue captains want you delivered to a neutral facility for a bloodline vote. They gave me forty-eight hours. After that they plan to call refusal an act of treason.”She felt the floor shift under the ordinary statement of fact.

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Council’s Ultimatum

The afternoon had been quiet enough to feel almost ordinary. In the study the windows stood open to the cool coastal air. Cassian sat behind the heavy desk reviewing a set of revised port manifests when the intercom on the side table crackled once.Enzo’s voice came through, flat and controlled. “Boss, there is a black town car at the main gates. No prior clearance. The driver is requesting delivery of a formal envelope addressed to you by name.”Cassian set the manifest aside. “Verify the vehicle and the driver. If the package is clean, bring it in.”“Already in process.”Three minutes later the study doors opened. Enzo entered carrying a single cream-colored envelope. The dark wax seal on the back was unbroken. His expression was tighter than usual.“They used the old protocol,” Enzo said. “No electronic trail. Hand-delivered under council courier markings. The driver is already off the property.”Cassian held out his hand. Enzo placed the envelope in it and remained standing on the

The study balcony sat high enough to give a clear view of the courtyard garden without being obvious from below. Cassian stood with one hand on the stone railing, the other holding a half-finished espresso that had gone lukewarm.Below him Vittoria sat on a low bench near the white roses, a sketchbook open on her lap. She worked with quiet concentration, pencil moving in short, precise lines as she captured the architectural details of the old stone archway that framed the far end of the garden. He had been watching for nearly twenty minutes. The morning air was cool and clear. The security detail at the outer gate remained visible but unobtrusive. Everything looked ordinary. That was the problem. Ordinary left room for small openings.A plain white courier van appeared at the main gates and stopped at the checkpoint. The driver stepped out with a tablet and a medium-sized cardboard box.One of the perimeter guards checked the credentials, then waved him through to the inner courtyard

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Academic Advisor

The estate library was quiet in the mid-morning light. Vittoria sat at the mahogany desk with her laptop open and the camera angled just high enough to keep the background of bookshelves professional. She had already checked the lighting twice. The dark circles under her eyes were harder to hide. No amount of careful framing erased the tiredness that had settled into her face over the past week. The university portal chimed. Dr. Melissa Aris appeared on screen in her usual office, a wall of reference books behind her and a ceramic mug within reach. She smiled the moment the connection stabilized.“Vittoria. Right on time. How are you holding up?”“I’m fine, Dr. Aris. Ready to go over the latest section.”The professor opened a document on her end and glanced down at it. “Good. I read through the revised pages on the Florentine trade records last night. The structure is stronger. Your analysis of the 1487 tariff adjustments is particularly clear. But I want to talk about the transition

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   A Midnight Confession

The mansion held the deep quiet that only came after midnight. No footsteps in the corridors. Even the ocean against the cliffs sounded muted, as if the dark itself had thickened the air.Vittoria woke from a restless dream with her heart still beating too fast. The sheets on her side of the bed were cool. She turned her head and found the space beside her empty.Cassian stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, a dark shape against the glass. He had not turned on any lights. The only illumination came from the distant scatter of city lights far below the cliffs, faint and cold. His arms were crossed, shoulders set in the posture he used when his mind was turning over something he did not plan to share.Vittoria pushed the covers back and stood. The velvet carpet was soft under her bare feet. She crossed the room without speaking until she was a few steps behind him.“You’re still awake,” she said.“I didn’t feel like sleeping.”She moved closer and stopped beside him, looking out at the

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Flank Vehicle

The container terminal sat under a low gray sky, the air thick with the smell of diesel and wet concrete. Cranes moved slowly along the waterfront, their cables creaking as they lifted another stack of steel boxes from a cargo ship. Enzo stood inside the glass-walled operations office overlooking the main yard, a tablet in one hand and a printed manifest in the other. The lead shipping captain, a broad man named Ruiz who had worked the docks for twenty years, leaned over the same table. He pointed at a column of numbers with a thick finger.“See these three lines?” Ruiz said. “High-value electronics, marked for the northern distribution hub. According to the original contracts they should have cleared through Bay 7 and gone straight up the coastal route. Instead the digital tags show them peeling off toward the western district two nights ago.”Enzo scrolled through the corresponding digital log. The reroute was clean. No alarm flags. No request for authorization. Just a quiet change
