The morning sun rose cold over the cliffs, casting long, pale shafts of light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite. Vittoria opened her eyes slowly, her body aching with a deep, unfamiliar soreness that pulled her instantly back to the reality of the previous night. She rolled over, her hand brushing against the empty silk sheet beside her. It was cold. Cassian was gone, leaving only the faint, lingering scent of cedar and expensive leather on the dark pillowcase.

She sat up, pulling the heavy velvet duvet to her chest as she stared at the massive, unfamiliar room. The grandeur of the stone fireplace, the gold-accented dressers, and the arched doorway felt less like a bedroom and more like a beautifully constructed holding cell.

A quiet knock rattled the heavy mahogany door, breaking the silence.

"Come in," Vittoria said, her voice dry and slightly cracked.

The door swung open, and Maria walked in, carrying a large silver tray. The scent of freshly brewed coffee, warm butter, and sweet pastries immediately filled the air, making Vittoria's stomach growl despite her anxiety.

"Good morning, child," Maria said, offering a warm, grandmotherly smile as she set the tray on the small table near the window. "I brought you some breakfast. You did not touch your dinner last night, and you need to keep your strength up."

"Thank you, Maria," Vittoria said, pulling her hair back. "Is... is Cassian still in the estate?"

"Mr. Marchetti left before dawn," Maria replied, pouring a cup of dark coffee into a delicate porcelain cup. "He had business in the city. He is a very busy man, especially after the events of last night."

Vittoria shuddered, the image of Silvio's hand pinned to the mahogany dining table flashing vividly in her mind. "He stabbed a man, Maria. He did it right in front of me, and he didn't even blink."

"He did what he had to do to protect you, Vittoria," Maria said softly, walking over to the edge of the bed and sitting down. "Silvio is a dangerous, greedy man. If Cassian had let those words pass without consequence, the other captains would have seen it as a sign of weakness. In this family, weakness is a death sentence."

"But it was so brutal," Vittoria whispered, her fingers clutching the duvet. "I have lived a normal life for eighteen years. I went to college. I bought groceries. I didn't have to watch men bleed at the dinner table."

"You are a Carvelli, child," Maria said, her voice dropping to a gentle, serious register. "Your father's blood runs in your veins. You were never going to stay hidden forever. The world has a way of finding people like us."

"I don't want to be a Carvelli," Vittoria said, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I just want my mother. Is she really safe?"

"She is safe," Maria assured her, reaching out to pat her knee. "Cassian has placed her in a very comfortable home in the western district. She has a garden, she has medical care, and she has three of our best men guarding the perimeter. Nobody can reach her there."

"But she is still his hostage," Vittoria noted bitterly. "He is keeping her there to make sure I don't run away."

"Perhaps," Maria admitted, standing up and smoothing her dark apron. "But he is also keeping her alive. The syndicate elders wanted both of you dead, Vittoria. By signing that marriage contract, you became a Marchetti. Under our law, anyone who touches you touches the Don. You are his wife now."

"It is just a piece of paper," Vittoria muttered, looking down at the silver bracelet on her left wrist.

"To the world, it is a shield," Maria said. "Now, eat your breakfast. I brought some comfortable clothes for you. Jeans and a soft knit sweater. I thought you might want to get out of those heavy silk dresses."

"Thank you," Vittoria said, a genuine sense of gratitude softening her voice. "I really appreciate that."

"Take your time, child," Maria said, walking toward the door. "Once you are dressed, go take a walk in the courtyard. The fresh air will do you good. Do not spend the day hiding in this room."

Vittoria waited until the door clicked shut before sliding out of the bed. She showered quickly, letting the hot water wash away the physical tension of the night. Once finished, she pulled on the simple blue jeans and the cream-colored sweater Maria had left for her. The familiar clothing made her feel human again, grounding her in a reality that felt far away from the dark, dangerous world of the Marchetti estate.

She walked out of the suite and navigated the quiet, stone-walled corridors of the mansion until she found the heavy glass doors leading to the courtyard. The garden was beautiful, filled with blooming white roses, stone pathways, and a small fountain that bubbled softly in the center. The sea breeze rolled off the nearby cliffs, carrying the salty scent of the ocean.

Vittoria walked slowly along the stone path, her fingers brushing the soft petals of a white rose. For a brief moment, she felt peaceful. Then, she looked up and saw two heavily armed guards standing at the iron gates at the edge of the property. The illusion of safety shattered, replaced by the heavy weight of her gilded cage.

"Do you like the roses, sweet girl?"

Vittoria gasped, spinning around to find Cassian standing just a few feet away. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white dress shirt open at the collar and his sleeves rolled up to reveal the dark, intricate tattoos that wrapped around his muscular forearms.

"You like to sneak up on people, don't you?" Vittoria asked, her pulse accelerating as he stepped closer, his presence immediately dominating the quiet garden.

"I do not sneak," Cassian murmured, his dark eyes scanning her casual outfit with quiet, possessive approval. "I simply walk. You were too deep in your thoughts to hear my footsteps."

"I was thinking about how beautiful this place is," she said, looking away from his intense gaze. "And how much it feels like a prison."

"It is a sanctuary, Vittoria," Cassian said, his hand rising to touch her chin, his fingers warm and firm against her skin. He tilted her face up, forcing her to look into his dark, unyielding eyes. "The world outside is full of people who want to put you in a ditch because of your father's name. Here, you are safe."

"Safe because I am under your lock and key," she argued, though she did not pull away from his touch. "My mother is still out there. You promised me she would be protected."

"She is protected," Cassian said, his thumb brushing her lower lip with a slow, demanding pressure. "She is in a secure estate, just as I promised. I do not break my word, sweet girl."

"I want to speak to her," Vittoria demanded, her voice rising slightly. "You said I could speak to her today. I need to hear her voice."

"And you will," Cassian said, his hand sliding down to clasp her fingers, his grip tight and commanding. "Come inside. We will make the call from my study."

"Is she really safe, Cassian?" she asked, her green eyes searching his face for any sign of deception. "Or are you just using her to keep me compliant?"

"If I wanted you compliant, sweet girl, I would not have spent the night making you scream my name," Cassian whispered, his lips brushing against her temple, his warm breath sending a hot shiver down her spine. "I want you willing. There is a difference."

Vittoria felt her cheeks burn, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You are infuriating."

"I am your husband," Cassian corrected, a slow, dangerous smile curving his lips. "And it is time you started acting like it. Let us go."

His knuckles were slightly bruised, but his expression was entirely calm."I had to do exactly that," Cassian said, walking toward her. "In my world, weakness is a death sentence. "Vittoria Carvelli has signed the marriage contract. She is now my fiancée, and she will be protected under the Marchetti name."The table of ten captains remained silent, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife."A Carvelli," Silvio muttered, setting his glass down with a loud clatter. "You bring the daughter of Salvatore into our inner circle, Cassian? Her father

The headlights of three idling vehicles cast long shadows across the living room walls. Inside the small house, the air felt stale with the sudden scent of burning wax and rain. Vittoria stood paralyzed, her hand still clutching her mother's trembling shoulder as the front door lock clicked, the wood swinging inward with a low creak."We are out of time, Vittoria," Teresa whispered, her voice cracking as she pushed her daughter behind her.
