The university library smelled of old paper, dust, and the faint chemical tang of preservation treatments. Tall shelves of restricted historical volumes rose on either side of the narrow aisle where Vittoria stood, a soft pencil in one hand and a stack of requested texts on the small cart beside her. The afternoon light that filtered through the high windows was muted and scholarly. For a few precious minutes the outside world had fallen away.

Enzo remained near the entrance to the restricted section, one hand resting loosely inside his open trench coat, eyes moving constantly over every person who entered the aisle. He had not spoken much since they left the estate. His presence was simply a solid, silent fact.

Vittoria pulled another volume from the shelf and opened it carefully on the reading stand. The Florentine maritime logs were exactly as incomplete in the digital scans as she had feared. Marginal notes in faded ink filled the gaps. She began copying the most critical passages onto her legal pad, working with focused speed.

The soft sound of footsteps approached from the main corridor.

Hannah turned the corner and stopped dead.

For a second neither of them moved. Then Hannah’s face shifted from shock to something sharper and more hurt.

“Vittoria?”

Vittoria’s stomach dropped. She set the pencil down. “Hannah.”

Enzo’s posture changed instantly. He took one quiet step closer but did not intervene yet.

Hannah crossed the remaining distance in three quick strides. “What the hell? You vanish for weeks, send me half-answers, and now you’re just… here? In the library like nothing happened?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Everything is complicated according to you.” Hannah’s voice stayed low out of respect for the space, but the emotion in it was raw. “I went to your house. Your mom’s car was gone. Neighbors talked about black SUVs. You told me you moved for medical reasons and then you basically disappeared. I’ve been losing my mind.”

Vittoria glanced once at Enzo. His expression remained neutral, but his eyes were fixed on the exchange. She turned back to Hannah.

“I’m staying somewhere secure right now. For reasons I can’t fully explain. My mom is safe. I’m safe. That’s the important part.”

“Safe from what?” Hannah’s arms were crossed tight. “And who’s the guy in the coat who looks like he’s ready to tackle someone?”

“He’s… security. It’s temporary.”

Hannah stared at her. “You’re married. You told me that much. To the man from the club. The one who owns half the city. And now you have bodyguards in the university library. Vittoria, this is not normal.”

“I know it’s not.” Vittoria’s throat felt tight. “I hate that I can’t tell you everything. I hate that you’re worried. But if I give you the full picture it puts you in a position I will not put you in.”

Hannah’s eyes shone with frustrated tears she was clearly fighting. “So I’m just supposed to accept the lies and the distance and pretend this is fine?”

“I’m asking you to trust that I’m doing the best I can with what I have.”

Enzo’s voice cut in, quiet but firm. “Mrs. Marchetti. Time.”

Hannah’s head snapped toward him. “Mrs. Marchetti. Right.”

Vittoria reached out and briefly squeezed Hannah’s arm. “I will call you. Soon. When I can speak more freely. Please don’t go to the police or start asking around campus. It will only make things harder.”

Hannah looked like she wanted to argue further. Instead she let out a shaky breath and nodded once. “I don’t like this. At all. But I’m glad you’re standing here in one piece.”

“Me too.”

Hannah gave Enzo a long, suspicious look, then turned and walked back toward the main reading room without another word.

Vittoria stood still for several seconds after she was gone. The weight of the severed ordinary life settled heavily across her shoulders. Enzo waited until Hannah was fully out of sight before he spoke again.

“We should finish and leave. The longer we stay the more variables appear.”

Vittoria closed the volume she had been copying from and added it to the small stack she was allowed to check out under special academic clearance. Her hands felt unsteady.

“She deserved better than that conversation,” she said quietly.

“She is safer with incomplete information.” Enzo’s tone carried no judgment, only practical assessment. “You handled it as well as the situation allowed.”

They walked the cart back to the restricted desk, completed the brief paperwork, and headed for the exit. The ordinary campus sounds of students talking and pages turning felt distant and slightly unreal. Vittoria kept her eyes forward, the legal pad of copied notes tucked under her arm, and tried not to think about how permanently the gap between her old life and this one had just widened.

The study doors had not closed completely. Vittoria stood in the narrow gap, one hand still on the frame. She pushed the door the rest of the way open and stepped inside.Cassian was behind the desk. The cream-colored page lay face down in front of him. He looked up the moment she entered and did not seem surprised. Enzo had already gone. The two of them were alone in the quiet room.Vittoria stopped just inside the threshold. Her voice came out steadier than she expected.“What was that letter?”Cassian did not answer immediately. He reached for the page, turned it face up for a second as if confirming the words were still there, then looked at her again. A cold, predatory smile spread across his face. It did not reach his eyes.“An ultimatum,” he said. “The rogue captains want you delivered to a neutral facility for a bloodline vote. They gave me forty-eight hours. After that they plan to call refusal an act of treason.”She felt the floor shift under the ordinary statement of fact.

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Council’s Ultimatum

The afternoon had been quiet enough to feel almost ordinary. In the study the windows stood open to the cool coastal air. Cassian sat behind the heavy desk reviewing a set of revised port manifests when the intercom on the side table crackled once.Enzo’s voice came through, flat and controlled. “Boss, there is a black town car at the main gates. No prior clearance. The driver is requesting delivery of a formal envelope addressed to you by name.”Cassian set the manifest aside. “Verify the vehicle and the driver. If the package is clean, bring it in.”“Already in process.”Three minutes later the study doors opened. Enzo entered carrying a single cream-colored envelope. The dark wax seal on the back was unbroken. His expression was tighter than usual.“They used the old protocol,” Enzo said. “No electronic trail. Hand-delivered under council courier markings. The driver is already off the property.”Cassian held out his hand. Enzo placed the envelope in it and remained standing on the

The study balcony sat high enough to give a clear view of the courtyard garden without being obvious from below. Cassian stood with one hand on the stone railing, the other holding a half-finished espresso that had gone lukewarm.Below him Vittoria sat on a low bench near the white roses, a sketchbook open on her lap. She worked with quiet concentration, pencil moving in short, precise lines as she captured the architectural details of the old stone archway that framed the far end of the garden. He had been watching for nearly twenty minutes. The morning air was cool and clear. The security detail at the outer gate remained visible but unobtrusive. Everything looked ordinary. That was the problem. Ordinary left room for small openings.A plain white courier van appeared at the main gates and stopped at the checkpoint. The driver stepped out with a tablet and a medium-sized cardboard box.One of the perimeter guards checked the credentials, then waved him through to the inner courtyard

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Academic Advisor

The estate library was quiet in the mid-morning light. Vittoria sat at the mahogany desk with her laptop open and the camera angled just high enough to keep the background of bookshelves professional. She had already checked the lighting twice. The dark circles under her eyes were harder to hide. No amount of careful framing erased the tiredness that had settled into her face over the past week. The university portal chimed. Dr. Melissa Aris appeared on screen in her usual office, a wall of reference books behind her and a ceramic mug within reach. She smiled the moment the connection stabilized.“Vittoria. Right on time. How are you holding up?”“I’m fine, Dr. Aris. Ready to go over the latest section.”The professor opened a document on her end and glanced down at it. “Good. I read through the revised pages on the Florentine trade records last night. The structure is stronger. Your analysis of the 1487 tariff adjustments is particularly clear. But I want to talk about the transition

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   A Midnight Confession

The mansion held the deep quiet that only came after midnight. No footsteps in the corridors. Even the ocean against the cliffs sounded muted, as if the dark itself had thickened the air.Vittoria woke from a restless dream with her heart still beating too fast. The sheets on her side of the bed were cool. She turned her head and found the space beside her empty.Cassian stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, a dark shape against the glass. He had not turned on any lights. The only illumination came from the distant scatter of city lights far below the cliffs, faint and cold. His arms were crossed, shoulders set in the posture he used when his mind was turning over something he did not plan to share.Vittoria pushed the covers back and stood. The velvet carpet was soft under her bare feet. She crossed the room without speaking until she was a few steps behind him.“You’re still awake,” she said.“I didn’t feel like sleeping.”She moved closer and stopped beside him, looking out at the

  • The Don's Dangerous Obsession   The Flank Vehicle

The container terminal sat under a low gray sky, the air thick with the smell of diesel and wet concrete. Cranes moved slowly along the waterfront, their cables creaking as they lifted another stack of steel boxes from a cargo ship. Enzo stood inside the glass-walled operations office overlooking the main yard, a tablet in one hand and a printed manifest in the other. The lead shipping captain, a broad man named Ruiz who had worked the docks for twenty years, leaned over the same table. He pointed at a column of numbers with a thick finger.“See these three lines?” Ruiz said. “High-value electronics, marked for the northern distribution hub. According to the original contracts they should have cleared through Bay 7 and gone straight up the coastal route. Instead the digital tags show them peeling off toward the western district two nights ago.”Enzo scrolled through the corresponding digital log. The reroute was clean. No alarm flags. No request for authorization. Just a quiet change
