Chapter 5

Author: Peachy
A blood-stained file was thrown at my feet.

Leo spoke. His voice was cold.

“See for yourself, Scarlett. You come back, and the Judge is dead.”

I replied automatically, “My condolences?”

“Condolences?” Leo exploded. “Are you insane? The Judge is dead! That means the Don’s enforcers will be tearing this base apart by morning!”

I paused, my mind slowly catching up. The “Judge.”

The Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court.

He was a public official, but everyone in the underworld knew he was Marcello’s most important pawn in the legal world.

Our organization, The Syndicate, always operated in the gray. We did dirty work for cash.

The last Don had almost wiped us out. It was only after Marcello took over and created the underworld’s “non-aggression treaty” that we got a chance to breathe.

And the first rule of that treaty was: you don’t touch the Don’s people.

Now, he was dead.

I thought for a second. “So… no condolences, then?”

Leo got even angrier. He shoved the barrel of his rifle right under my nose.

“Scarlett, stop playing dumb! The Judge was assassinated. The entire New York underworld is shaking. Once Marcello finds out we did it, he’ll wipe us off the map!”

Why does everyone want to wipe me out?

It finally clicked.

“You don’t think I killed him, do you?”

Seriously? Why would I kill him? Besides, I haven’t taken a private job in ages. I’d discovered that getting the Don to kill people was way more efficient than doing it myself.

“Who else could it be?” Mia, the hacker, spoke coldly. She tossed a clear evidence bag at me. “Only one shell casing was left at the scene. Custom caliber. Cross-hatched matte finish. Your signature toy.”

I was silent for a few seconds. “It wasn’t me. At the time of the Judge's death, I was… busy. I was in the Don’s bathroom, trying to kill him with a dagger.”

No one believed me.

Mia scoffed. “You assassinated the Don? If you really did, why is Marcello still alive and well?”

Ugh. There’s no explaining it to you people who’ve never seen the Don naked.

I sighed and looked around. “So, you all think I killed the Judge?”

“Yes,” Leo said flatly.

The other assassins muttered among themselves. But no one lowered their guns.

Finally, I looked at the man I respected most, my handler, Julian. I asked, my voice small, “Julian, you don’t believe me either?”

Julian put a hand on my shoulder. His voice was warm. “Scarlett, I believe you didn’t do it. Don’t worry. I will get to the bottom of this.”

But he looked exhausted. His suit was wrinkled. He’d clearly been racking his brain to handle this crisis.

The lives of hundreds of people in the organization rested on his shoulders. He was in a tough spot.

For the sake of the base, someone had to take the fall for pissing off the Don.

I was silent for a long moment. I grit my teeth and confessed. “Fine. I killed the Judge.”

The tension in the room vanished instantly. The assault rifles were lowered.

Suddenly, everyone was laughing and joking.

“I knew it! It had to be Scarlett! She’s our best hitter!”

“Infiltrating the Supreme Court, a perfect kill, and a clean getaway? Only she could pull that off!”

“You’re too kind, really,” I said humbly.

But inside, I was furious.

Who the hell killed the Judge and framed me?

If I ever find them, I’ll skin them alive.

Julian sighed. His voice was gentle but resigned. “Scarlett, to calm everyone down, we’ll have to put you away for a bit. I’m sorry.”

He waved his hand. They disarmed me and locked me in the highest-level safe room.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “I’ll go negotiate with Marcello myself. You just stay here for a few days. Not even C4 can blast this door open. No one can hurt you in here.”

That night, I sat in the safe room, getting angrier by the second.

Why me? If I’d actually killed the guy, fine. But I didn’t!

No. I’m not taking the fall for this. I’m going to find the bastard who framed me.

I jumped to my feet.

The blast door was tough, but there wasn't a lock in the world I couldn't pick.

I pulled a hidden steel wire from my ballistic vest, dismantled the keypad, and short-circuited the lock.

After all that hard work, I slipped out of the safe room. I was about to escape through the ventilation ducts when I saw him. Julian, standing outside the main control room, holding a glass of whiskey. He was watching the monitors with a cold expression.

I froze.

Seriously, Julian? Not even the Don guarded me this closely.

Just as I was about to go back and pretend to be asleep, a piercing siren blared through the base.

The highest-level red alert.

I stared at the monitor, and my blood ran cold.

On the big screen, dozens of black, armored SUVs had surrounded the base.

And there he was. That powerful, dangerous man. Don Marcello. Dressed in a black trench coat, playing with a lighter in his hand, standing coolly in the flickering firelight.

The Don was here. And he'd brought his army.

The first shots rang out as my hand closed around the gun he’d given me."Always, Marcello," I said.Marcello didn't say another word. He strode toward the door, his long coat sweeping over the broken glass. I followed right behind him. I could feel the tension in his body; he was a bowstring pulled taut, terrifyingly calm.Outside, the night was torn apart by a storm of bullets. The mercenaries’ firepower was brutal. Their heavy weapons shredded the outer stone walls. But it didn't take long for me to realize something was off.Marcello's enforcers weren't fighting back head-on.They were ghosts. They struck from the shadows, from the mercenaries’ undefended flanks and rear, cutting them down with precision. Snipers picked them off from high ground. Close-combat teams slit throats in the darkness of the lawns.I finally understood. The Don was never on the defensive. He’d set a trap. He was waiting for Julian to put all his cards on the table, just so he could wipe them all out in one

The echo of the gunshot faded. Broken glass glittered on the floor.I stood with my arm hanging at my side, the gun still smoking.Marcello came up behind me. He covered my hand with his, his touch gentle, and my fingers went slack.“Nice shot,” he said, his voice low. He took the gun from my hand and tossed it onto the desk. It landed with a loud crack of metal on wood.I didn’t answer.Fourteen years of trust, gone. I thought I should be breaking down, but all I felt was a tired, sharp clarity.“I was using you from the start,” I said, staring at the shattered glass, not backing down. “Crashing your casino. Breaking into your bathroom. Using you to destroy my enemies. I needed an ally. Someone strong. Someone ruthless. You were the perfect target.”Marcello just watched me.“I never planned on telling you the truth,” I looked up, meeting his grey eyes. “If Julian hadn't blown everything up, I probably never would have.”The study was so quiet I could hear my own heart pound.“I know,

Julian’s voice oozed from the speakers, soft and sick, just like when he’d coached me through my first kill.I stared at the face I’d known for fourteen years. I didn't feel fear. Just a bone-deep disgust that churned in my stomach.“Handler.” I let out a cold laugh. “No, what should I call you? Daddy's little boy?”The mask was completely gone. He took a sip of whiskey, his eyes like ice.“Scarlett, who do you think you’re fighting for?” he said slowly. “Marcello killed my father. Stole his throne. Then he gave you a bunch of rules, made you think you were some ‘Avenging Angel.’ But how is he any different from my father? They’re both dictators who climbed a mountain of bodies.”“At least my father was never a hypocrite,” he continued, his voice dangerously warm. “Come back, Scarlett. Come back to me. To a world with no rules. Where only the strong survive. That’s where people like us belong.”I stared at him.I was fourteen when I did my first hit. The target was a fentanyl dealer in

Before I could move, the armory door exploded inward.Blinding light. A figure stormed in, gun raised. Bullets screamed past us, sparking off the metal shelves.“Get down!”Marcello moved faster than thought. He shoved me into the shadows of a rack, spinning to shield me with his body as he drew his own weapon and returned fire.Sparks flew in the chaos.I peeked through the gap under his arm. The woman's face... it was almost mine. Same height. Same dark hair. She even stood like me. A deliberate copy. But her eyes were wrong. Not calm like mine. Just wild. Obsessed.“Don’t stop me!” she shrieked, lunging for Marcello.I didn’t give her the chance.I slipped out from behind him, my dagger in my hand. I slammed into her, knocking her gun aside. We were locked in close combat. She was good. Her blade sliced my arm, a hot sting of pain. But she wasn't me.I twisted, locking my arm around her throat. I slammed her back against a crate of ammo, my dagger pressed right against the artery in

Rocco’s gun was still raised. But no one dared to pull the trigger.Marcello slowly lifted a hand. Pressed it to the bleeding gauze on his neck. His grey eyes swirled with a dangerous amusement. A dark, lethal fondness.“Rocco,” his voice was a low growl, laced with absolute command. “Lower your weapon.”Rocco hesitated, then obeyed. My gaze was fixed on the lipstick stain. The fire in my chest wouldn't die down."Tell me what she looked like." I tightened my grip on his collar, not caring that he was hurt. "Her height. Her voice. The way she walked. Tell me everything."Marcello let me manhandle him. A dangerous smirk played on his lips."Are you jealous?""I'm hunting a rat." My voice was ice, but my fingers betrayed me, tracing the warm muscle of his chest. "That imposter stole my signature move. I'm going to personally crush her throat.""Scarlett Attempts to Assassinate the Don." If that headline got out, Julian would win. I wouldn't let him write this story.I made a decision. Ri

  • The Don’s Favorite Assassin   Chapter 6

The alarm shrieked. My mind went blank. One thought.Julian’s lost his damn mind.He knew the Don’s enforcers would slaughter everyone in the base. Hundreds of people. Gone. But he just stood there. Outside the control room. Sipping his whiskey. Not a flicker of fear on his face. This was wrong. So wrong.A real leader would be getting his people out. Not standing around, waiting for Marcello to blow the damn doors off like it’s a movie.I stared at the monitor. At Julian. My blood ran ice-cold.He wasn't trying to save us.He was trying to kill us. All of us.A perfect, clean slaughter. And he'd use a "traitor" to light the fuse. A traitor no one could question.Me. I was his perfect scapegoat. No more waiting.I grabbed the vent cover on the wall. Used the same wire from the lock to pry it open. Shoved three blocks of C4 inside—I’d swiped them from the armory earlier."Scarlett!"Julian's voice. A tight edge to it.I didn't look back.I lit the fuse. Dove into the vent. The explosion
