Chapter 2

Author: Rainy Bell
Enzo stood up and picked up the divorce papers. "I'll have my lawyer, Giorgio Saviano, send over the marital settlement agreement as soon as possible."

The moment the door closed, the room fell silent once again.

As Isabella watched Enzo leave, the warmth slowly faded from her eyes. Her mind drifted back to a long time ago.

She was born into the Rossi family.

The Rossi family was an old-line mafia clan whose reach extended from Cantele to Millbrook. They had their hands on maritime shipping, air freight, pharmaceuticals, firearms, and a network of underground trade routes.

Isabella was the family's only daughter, a Principessa raised under the adoration of countless people.

When she was ten years old, the family was in turmoil. Thus, her Padre, Riccardo Rossi, sent her back to the estate in Canele to stay out of harm's way.

By then, there was already another child living there—Enzo, whom her Nonna, Noemi Orsini, had taken in.

Enzo's Padre, Davide Caro, had once worked for the Rossi family and died in a shootout at the docks, and his Madre, Viviana Tanzini, had long since passed away.

Enzo was a kid who'd clawed his way up through blood and mud, yet he knew better than anyone how to sheathe his claws when he was around Isabella.

If Isabella so much as glanced at a dress in a shop window, Enzo would go behind Noemi's back and run errands at the docks, the auto shops, and the underground boxing rings until he'd saved enough to buy it for her.

If she paused for just a couple of seconds outside a restaurant, he would eat the cheapest bread for three months straight and use the money he saved to buy her an expensive cake.

As a teenager, Enzo was quiet, sullen, and had a brutal hand.

But with Isabella, he was always gentle, so much so that he didn't seem like someone who would ever step into the family business.

Later, when Isabella was taken back to Millbrook, she insisted on keeping Enzo by her side.

It was she who begged Riccardo to give Enzo a status and to provide him with tutors who taught him law, accounting, negotiation, and protocol.

It was Isabella's Madre, Elvira Fiero, who brought Enzo to meet lawyers, congressmen, and bankers. She taught him how to scrub a trail of blood clean and dress it up as proper business.

It was also Isabella who staked her marriage, her reputation, and her position as heiress on Enzo, turning him from the Rossi family's weapon into someone capable of holding his own ground.

Riccardo and Elvira had never liked Enzo. They believed that an outsider whom the Rossi family had elevated could never be worthy of their only daughter.

However, Isabella knelt before them with red-rimmed eyes and said that she would marry no one but Enzo in this lifetime.

If they wanted to drive him away, then she would leave the Rossi family with him.

That day, Enzo also knelt beside her and swore an oath before Riccardo and Elvia. He said that within ten years, he would establish his own family and rise to the position of a Don whom no one could look down upon.

He said he loved Isabella more than his own life. He said he would never do her wrong.

Later, the man who'd grown up in the shadow of the Rossi family truly did climb his way up. Over blood and banknotes, he established the Caro family name in Millbrook.

He became one of the youngest and most ruthless Dons in Millbrook's mafia circles. He seized control of the docks, the nightclubs, the casinos, security operations, real estate, along with the shipping routes and pharmaceutical channels the Rossi family had carved out for him.

Enzo had finally gained the power to give Isabella the best life imaginable, yet it was at precisely this moment that he told her he had fallen in love with someone else.

Isabella dialed Elvira's number and called out, "Mamma."

Elvira immediately picked up that something was wrong. "What's the matter? Who hurt you? Why are you crying? Just tell me. You have your Padre and me. We're not going to let you shoulder this alone."

Isabella's tears fell all at once.

In recent years, the Rossi family had shifted most of their shipping and pharmaceutical operations to Poradia.

Yet, for Enzo's sake, Isabella had insisted on staying in Millbrook, staying with him as he built the Caro family into something formidable.

It was because of Enzo that her relationship with Riccardo and Elvira had also grown increasingly strained over the years.

She couldn't shake the feeling that they blamed her, yet she was too proud to be the first to reach out.

But in her previous life, when things between her and Enzo got truly ugly, the first ones to fly back to Millbrook and stand by her side were her parents. Even until the moment of their death, their greatest worry was simply whether she was living well or not.

Isabella bit down hard on the back of her hand, only managing to calm herself when she tasted blood in her mouth.

"It's nothing. I just miss you and Papa, that's all," she replied softly. "Isn't it Papa's birthday in a few days? I'll fly home for it."

After hanging up, Isabella booked a flight for a week out.

In seven days, she'd be gone from Millbrook, free of the marriage that had dragged her through hell.

She'd walk away from Enzo and never look back.

The morning sunlight fell upon the white stone path outside the estate, and the shadows of the olive trees stretched long and thin.Isabella walked through the open-air corridor, holding the newly signed project documents. The new port, jointly developed by the Rossi and Morelli families, was officially in operation. On top of that, the shipping routes that the Caro family had once controlled were being reshuffled and redistributed. The legitimate holdings the Rossi family had pried loose from the Caro family were finally disentangled from the mess of old books and folded back into the shipping, pharmaceutical, and cold chain operations.Isabella spent that year in a blur of work. But it was also the year she finally scraped the blood and debts of the past clean from her life. When she reached the garden, Elvira was there with several kids, feeding the pigeons. They were young ones from the family's branch lines, all of them quite small and rowdy. The moment they spotted Isabella

Sofia's end came swiftly. She had too many charges piled up against her, and the evidence was overwhelming.Assault at the hospital, attempted murder on the street, commercial espionage, collusion with external armed entities, involvement in the hijacking of an armored transport vehicle—any one of those charges was enough to keep her behind bars for a very long time. And this time, there was no one left to cover for her.The day of the trial, Millbrook was drenched in heavy rain.Isabella didn't enter the courthouse. Instead, she only watched the live news coverage from inside the car.On the screen, Sofia was led through a side door in a prison uniform. Her face was ashen, but her eyes remained vicious.Reporters shouted after her, asking if she had anything to say about the charges. She suddenly whipped her head toward the camera and shrieked hysterically, "It was all Enzo's fault! If he hadn't pursued me in the first place, I never would have ended up here! And Isabella—she s

After Enzo moved back to the old estate, the whole place fell eerily silent, as if it had been hollowed out. There were no Soldati coming and going, no conference room lit all night, and no hysterical cries from Sofia. There was only him alone, and a house full of old memories. The night Isabella arranged to meet him, he sat alone in the living room, waiting for a very long time.On the table sat an unopened bottle of Cantele red wine, the one Isabella had said many years ago was the most fitting for their wedding anniversary. But in the seven years that followed, she had never once gotten to open it.When the doorbell rang, Enzo rose almost instantly. However, when the door opened, Isabella didn't step inside. She stood outside in a long trench coat, the night and drifting rain behind her.Luca hadn't come with her. It was just her alone. That stung even more. She didn't need backup to face him now, because she simply wasn't afraid of him anymore."Let's talk inside," Enzo

Three days later, the feds still hadn't made a move. The first to act was the group of old men in Millbrook's underworld who cared about appearances above all else. They convened a small ad hoc meeting. On the surface, they were asking about the Springstead warehouse shootout, but everyone knew it was a warning shot aimed at Enzo.A Don who allowed his mistress to get her hands on the ledgers and let outsiders trace his operations right to the family's bedrock was already a joke in himself, let alone that the clean industries originally injected by the Rossi family had been jointly seized and taken back by Isabella and Luca.Inside the conference room, several old Dons took turns smoking, none of them willing to speak first. It wasn't until the very end that the eldest among them, Alessandro Avallone, finally spoke up slowly."Enzo, you're drowning in trouble. You can't control your women or keep your accounts in order. If this goes on, people will assume our entire circle is as

The night Sofia disappeared, the surveillance system at the Indie Island villa went dark for exactly seven minutes.Seven minutes later, the back door of the courtyard was open. Of the two Soldati assigned to guard her, one had been knocked unconscious, and the other had been taken down with a stun gun.By the time the word reached Enzo, Sofia was already gone.He stood in his study, staring at the smashed surveillance console on the floor. His expression was as dark and ominous as the sea before a storm."Who was on duty?" he asked. The moment his butler, Lorenzo Rinaldi, reported the names, Enzo hurled the wine glass in his hand. It flew past Lorenzo's temple and shattered against the wall."Lock those two worthless pieces of trash in the basement. They don't come out until Sofia is found."No one dared make a sound.Just then, Daniele strode in quickly and placed the latest intel in front of Enzo."Don Caro, there's trouble at Springstead Pier Six. Someone got there first a

When Isabella returned to Millbrook, she didn't stay at the old seaside villa, nor did she go anywhere the Caro family could easily reach. Instead, she went straight to the penthouse apartment her family had kept in Casterview. The entire floor had been refitted with new security. The elevator required dual authentication, and there was a 24-hour rotation of Soldati stationed downstairs. When Luca handed her the final security roster, he asked casually, "Are you scared?"Isabella stood by the window, looking down at the nightscape of endless traffic below, and replied evenly, "Yup. But this time, even if I'm scared, I'm still coming back."What she feared had never been Enzo, but repeating her previous life. She knew full well the danger was there, yet she still gave in because she couldn't bear to let go. In the end, she pulled herself and her family down into the abyss with her.The next day, the joint board meeting convened as scheduled. The conference room was packed. There
