[Isabella's POV]

After coming out of the doctor's office, I immediately rushed into the elevator and went all the way to the VIP ward on the top floor of the hospital. I needed Vincenzo Cursley to explain himself to me.

The elevator reached the top floor. Just as I was about to head out, I heard two familiar voices coming from the end of the corridor.

Vincenzo, you've got some nerve hiding Claudia and your child right under Isabella's nose. I was just wondering - what if she finds out?

To be honest, I'm really not sure what you're thinking. When we were kids, you were crazy about Claudia. Then, as an adult, you suddenly fell for Isabella, even though that meant driving Claudia away. But later, you went to great lengths to bring Claudia back, and ended up having a child with her... So, Vincenzo, who do you actually love?

In that moment, I felt a chill run down my spine and my body suddenly froze.

That was Fabian Granger's voice. He had known Vincenzo since they were kids.

Vincenzo went silent for a long while. Finally, he said, “I love Isabella, but I also can't just give up on Claudia. I feel bad after knowing that she hadn't been having a good life in Chemora.”

"Isabella has become my wife, The only way I can protect Claudia… is to let her carry my blood.“

Fabian sighed. "But what if Isabella gets pregnant? Claudia is my cousin. I don't want to see her child live without a father, left to live in misery for the rest of their lives."

The elevator doors creaked shut. Just as they closed, I heard Vincenzo whisper, “Don't worry, it won't happen.”

Fabian seemed slow to react: “What?”

But I got it. I understood everything now.

He meant I wouldn't be carrying his child.

Because he has already given me a slow-acting poison that will render me infertile, I cannot bear children for him.

I didn't go out to confront them; their conversation had already given me the answer.

The phone vibrated in his pocket. The screen lit up, showing that I had just received a text message from Vincenzo.

"Isabella, I'll meet you at the port tomorrow. Don't forget to bring along the protection charm I gave you.It will keep my princess safe on her journey."

I could feel my emotions about to explode. Huge tears began rolling down my cheeks.

Vincenzo was the head of the mafia, the Don, and he was always very busy. However, ever since we got married, he would insist on waiting for me at the port every time I came back from my business trips overseas.

He would also always book a restaurant in advance, give me a bouquet of flowers, and welcome me back home. It had always been that way every time.

His friends once told me that I was Vincenzo's first love, and he had gone out on a limb, maybe even two, to pursue me until I finally accepted him back then.

He also spent a lot of money hiring the best medical team to run the hospital my parents left me in on the West Dock, and helped me improve its medical services – all so that he could be with me.

Vincenzo spoiled me even more after we got married.

Once, I had just mentioned to him that I missed Mom, and he had immediately gotten to work in the middle of the night, calling up every contact he had and locating the heirlooms that Mom left for me before the sun even rose the next day.

However, it was also precisely a man as romantic as him who had secretly formed another family behind my back.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

No wonder Claudia Henderson was more familiar with Cursley Mansion's ins and outs than I was. No wonder someone who had supposedly spent the better part of her life in Chemora could still refer to Vincenzo's friends by their nicknames.

No wonder an "adoptive sister" like her could make him set his work aside and accompany her on a trip around the world.

Claudia wasn't his adoptive sister at all. She was obviously someone who had already been betrothed to Vincenzo at a young age. She was his fiancee.

And I had been the third wheel in their relationship the entire time.

My phone buzzed again. This time, it was a family photo from Claudia.

Accompanying the photo was a text message that said, "Bella, stop hoarding the spot that has never belonged to you. I thought that you'd know better, but I guess you're a lot more stubborn than I expected.

"Vincenzo said that the kid looks a lot like him. What do you think?"

I just glanced briefly at the text message before exiting the chat window. If she wanted him so badly, then I would let her have him.

I opened up my contact list and tapped on the number that I'd nearly forgotten by now. "Alexander... I lost our bet. I'll go with you, but there's one thing I need. Help me to pretend that I have died."

  • The Don’s Regret After My Departure   Chapter 19

[Isabella's POV]After midnight, London welcomed the heaviest snowfall of the winter."Isabella, will he die from this?" Francesca asked.I pulled the blanket over me, closed my eyes, and remained completely unmoved. “He's an adult with his own judgment. Even if he did, it's none of our business. Let's sleep.”Francesca admired my resolve. Thinking of all the hurt I had suffered, she yanked the curtains closed.Vincenzo spent the night out in the snow, constantly replaying our past. We had such good times in the past, renovating our home together and dreaming of the future. Yet all of that was destroyed by Claudia.Thinking of Claudia stoked a fire in him. By the end, his body felt like it was on fire, almost as if he were standing under the blazing sun. He knew he was hallucinating from the cold. He kept telling himself to hold on. If he held on, I would go back to him.But at the same time, another voice mocked him, whispering that I had long since fallen for Alexander.Every time he

[Isabella's POV]A low, deep voice suddenly came from the side.Vincenzo looked toward it, and his jaw dropped in shock. "Alexander, what are you doing here?"Alexander wrapped an arm around my shoulders. When he didn't feel any resistance from me, his grip tightened slightly. "I'm her fiance. Why wouldn't I be here?"Vincenzo looked like he'd been struck by lightning when he heard that. His mind roared, and for a second, he couldn't hear anything at all. "Fiance? How's that possible? Isabella, how can he be your fiance?"His eyes reddened, and his lips trembled.I pulled Alexander's hand down, laced our fingers together, and raised our hands so that Vincenzo could see. "Why is it impossible? I'm single, and I don't have kids. Is it hard to believe that I'd have a fiance?"Vincenzo's lips worked soundlessly as disbelief filled his eyes. My words were like a dull knife that had slid into his heart. His Adam's apple bobbed. "No. I won't allow it. I love you, so you can only be mine!"I c

[Isabella's POV]No matter how loudly Vincenzo yelled behind the car, it didn't slow. It only sped up and soon shrank to a black dot in the distance.Once the figure in the rearview mirror finally disappeared, Alexander eased off the gas.I shot him a suspicious look. "What's with the rush today? Are you trying to drive us to our deaths?"He ignored the jab and suddenly asked, "If Vincenzo came to you in tears, repented for his sins, and begged you to take him back, would you?"I frowned like I had just heard something filthy, but I still answered seriously, "No. Not in a million years."Every time I thought about what Vincenzo had done to me, a chill would run over my skin. I still jolted awake in the middle of the night due to nightmares.Alexander caught the resolve in my eyes, and the corner of his mouth lifted in the faintest smile.I caught that tiny shift in his expression. "Why are you asking that? Did you dream of him?""No. I was just thinking out loud." He brushed it off, th

[Isabella's POV]That night, Alexander spent the entire night digging up everything he could on Vincenzo and Claudia. By dawn, he had a detailed plan laid out.He could've just pulled me out by force, but I told him, "Do that, and he'll haunt me for life."So, Alexander swallowed his impatience and set things up piece by piece. That was when he realized the Cursley family's roots ran deeper than he had imagined. He pretended to want to marry Claudia to misdirect the Cursleys, but behind the scenes, he quietly placed people so that he could take me and vanish.Still, he came too late.By the time Alexander found me, I had already lost the ability to ever pick up my beloved scalpel again due to the car accident.Back then, I was a shell—a ghost of my past self. My eyes had been so empty that they were scary.Luckily, he stopped me from going too far. He took me to the best doctors for my brain and mind, and helped me through the difficult process of getting better. He helped me by giving

[Isabella's POV]Three years passed in the blink of an eye.A highly anticipated international medical summit was held in London, bringing together leading experts and researchers from around the world. In the conference centre's lounge area, several doctors were talking to each other."Have you heard that? Mr. Graham from the Mayo Clinic will be presenting this time. The new surgical method, which was first used by his medical team two years ago, has been very popular. Many people think he could be the next Nobel Prize winner.""Dr. Graham? He's certainly impressive, but I found his new approach still not very practical."An older doctor took a sip of coffee and said, "Don't forget about that 'Dr. Harper.' I hear her team has made big improvements in surgery for injuries and how patients recover after surgery over the past three years, saving thousands of lives. It's enough to make us old-timers feel ashamed."Leah, who was helping with the research and had heard their conversation, s

[Vincenzo's POV]"Fabian! This is your payback!" Claudia sat on the windowsill and let out a shrill laugh as she looked down at Fabian, who was pinned beneath the column. Then she fell backward, landing softly on the grass, she lay there laughing until there were tears. She was giddy with the thrill of survival.Meanwhile, the room—and Fabian inside it—was quickly swallowed by a tower of flames. However, Claudia's joy didn't last. The pills kicked in, and she blacked out. When she opened her eyes again, she was already in the hospital. She exhaled in relief the instant she realized she was still alive, but a second later, a pain unlike being crushed surged deep inside her body.It was a dull, spasming agony that seemed to course through her bones. The slightest shift caused pain so sharp that she felt like she was dying. She called weakly for a doctor, and a nurse stepped into the ward, answering her call.Claudia took a deep breath, saying hoarsely, "It hurts so much… Give me a painkil
