Chapter 6

Author: Anna Smith
Victor POV

On the other side of the city, I stood outside the detention center with a bouquet of roses in my hand, waiting for Elena.

I had been there for hours.

The sky slowly darkened, the evening air turning cold, until finally one of the staff members stepped outside and looked at me with mild confusion.

“Sir… the woman you’re waiting for left hours ago.”

For a moment I didn’t understand what he meant.

Left?

I drove back to the Moretti estate immediately, the roses still lying on the passeng

  • The Don’s Runaway Wife   Chapter 9

When I stepped out of the apartment building that morning, the snow was already falling heavily over the quiet street in Zurich. The cold air bit through the thick wool of my oatmeal-colored cashmere coat, and I wrapped my scarf a little tighter around my neck as I prepared to walk to the small bakery on the corner. Then I saw him.For a moment I thought the figure standing across the street was just another shadow blurred by the snow. But when he shifted slightly under the streetlamp, the light caught his face, and my heart stopped for a second before turning completely cold.Victor.He looked nothing like the man I remembered. The powerful mafia Don who once controlled half the underworld with a single word had been replaced by someone exhausted and worn down by something far heavier than the winter cold. His dark coat was wrinkled and dusted with snow, his beard unshaven, his hair damp from the night. He looked like a man who had been standing there for hours.Maybe all night. When

The door exploded inward under my kick. The sound echoed through the hospital room, cutting straight through Stella’s cheerful, bragging voice. She froze. For a moment the entire room went silent.I stood in the doorway, my chest rising and falling slowly, a storm boiling under my skin that I could barely keep contained. Every step I took toward her felt heavy, deliberate, like the slow approach of something inevitable. The smile on Stella’s face collapsed instantly. Her phone slipped from her fingers and shattered against the floor.“V-Victor…” Her voice trembled so badly it barely sounded like speech. “When did you get back? I can explain—”“Explain?”My voice came out colder than I had ever heard it before.I bent down, picked up the phone from the floor. The call screen was still active. The poison she had just spilled into it still seemed to linger in the air.“Explain how you staged the story about saving my life?” I asked quietly.“Or explain the car accident?”Her face went whi

When I got back to the house, the silence was suffocating.I pulled open the liquor cabinet with more force than necessary, grabbed an already opened bottle of whiskey, and took a long drink straight from the bottle. The liquid burned all the way down my throat, sharp and punishing, but it did nothing to warm the cold spreading through my chest. At some point the room began to blur.In the haze of alcohol, I thought I saw Elena sitting on the sofa, arms crossed, glaring at me the way she always did when I drank too much.“Victor, seriously? Again? Do you want to destroy your stomach?”I reached out without thinking. My fingers closed around nothing but cold air.“Elena…” I muttered hoarsely. The only answer was the wind rattling softly against the windows.I woke up the next morning still on the couch. My head felt like it had been split open, and the familiar ache in my stomach had already started to spread.Without thinking, I called out, my voice rough.“Elena… the stomach medicine.

The mansion was quiet when I walked in. Too quiet.Elena wasn’t there.Something felt wrong the moment I stepped into the empty living room.I went upstairs and plugged my phone into the charger. The screen lit up a few seconds later, and a message appeared at the top. From Elena.I opened it.Victor, I’m leaving. I’ve signed the divorce papers…The rest of the words blurred in front of my eyes.“Bang—!”I shot up from the chair so violently that the glass on the bedside table

Just then, hurried footsteps and startled cries erupted behind me.My father, my mother, and several members of the Rossi household rushed out of the mansion at once.“Stella!” my mother screamed as she ran forward and dropped to her knees beside her.My father hurried over and crouched down to check her condition. There was a gash on Stella’s forehead, blood running down the side of her face, her skin pale as paper, her whole body trembling as if she might faint at any moment.“Dad… Mom… I’m… I’m fine… please don’t blame Elena…”“You hit Stella?!”“You vicious girl! How could you do something like this? She’s your sister!” My mother’s eyes cut toward me like knives. My father stood up abruptly, and before I could react, a sharp slap crashed across my face.“Smack—!”My head snapped to the side, heat exploding across my cheek while a loud ringing filled my ears.“I didn’t touch her! She ran in front of the car herself!”“You still dare to lie? Stella is bleeding and you’re still trying

His jaw tightened slightly. It was the expression he wore whenever something displeased him.The next second he set his teacup down, pulled out his phone, and made a call. After speaking a few quiet sentences in Italian, he rose from the sofa and told us that something urgent had come up within the family organization. He said he had to deal with it personally, but that he would come back to pick me up once the dinner was over. The rest of the birthday dinner felt unbearable. My father and mother seemed to have finally found an outlet for their irritation. From the moment Victor left, they took turns criticizing me, saying I lacked composure, saying the way I behaved at the banquet the night before had embarrassed the Rossi family in front of half the underworld.Just as the atmosphere in the room was growing heavier and heavier, there was sudden commotion at the entrance.Stella had returned. Her eyes were red as if she had been crying, and her long hair was slightly disheveled, mak
