Chapter 6

Author: Celebrant
A month later, I stood in the hallway at Calidora Medical Center. The disinfectant didn't choke me anymore.

Yvette was right—the sky here was a clear, endless blue. Sunlight warmed my lab coat.

"Dr. Accardi, emergency in Room 3!"

A nurse barreled past, nearly knocking the chart from my hands.

I rushed into the delivery room. Hemorrhage.

Blood everywhere. Sheets soaked dark.

My hands moved on muscle memory. My voice didn't.

"Prep transfusion. Call the blood bank. Alert the OR."

"Dr. Accardi?"

A calm voice came from behind.

I turned and saw Ian in dark green scrubs. Gold-rimmed glasses. Steady eyes.

"I'll lead. You assist."

The surgical light snapped on and a memory slammed into me—me on the floor, blood pooling, my baby slipping away.

My grip faltered.

Ian covered my hand. Steady and reassuring.

"Don't be scared. I'm here."

Three hours later, the mother was stable.

I collapsed in the locker room, fingers still shaking.

The door creaked open. Ian handed me a cup of hot

I tugged Ian, ready to leave, when Matteo lunged and grabbed my wrist.I jerked away. He stumbled into a streetlight, wincing."Arianna..." His voice cracked, eyes burning red. "I was wrong. I... I really was wrong..."I laughed, sharp and cold. "Sir, you hurt the person you claimed to love. Once that's done, it's done. I don't know who this 'Arianna' is you're talking about, but she would never want to see you again."He dropped to his knees, clutching my pants."Arianna, I'll do anything. Just don't leave me!"Ian stepped forward, but I raised a hand to stop him."Don't pretend you don't know me. Don't ignore me..."I drew in a slow breath. Running forever wouldn't fix this."Fine. I'm Arianna. But you really think one apology erases everything?"His Adam's apple bobbed. No words."When your men beat me until I lost our baby," I snapped, "where were you?"He dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around my legs, face buried in my knees."I didn't know it was you. I thou

Matteo stumbled back, spine slamming into the cold wall. Regret crushed his chest, stealing his breath. He stormed into his office like a man possessed, kicked the desk over. Papers, laptops, glass—everything hit the floor.Frames shattered, his twisted reflection splintered across the shards."Find her! Lock down all of San Calvino!" he shouted, neck veins popping. "Turn the damn city inside out. I want her back!"His men had never seen him like this. Heads down, they moved fast.Matteo drove his fist into the wall. The sharp bite of antiseptic hit my nose as I snapped awake. My friend and colleague Yvette's face blurred in, then came into focus."You're up?" She pushed me back gently. "Don't move. You just had surgery."I stared at the ceiling cracks. My voice came out cracked. "My baby...""Gone." Her grip on my hand tightened. Eyes bloodshot. "But you made it."A slow, aching burn spread through my stomach, like something dull and cruel was carving me up from the inside. I shut my eyes. Felt tears slip sideways into the pillow."I told Ian about you." She dropped a folder on the nightstand. "He pushed your start date. You can leave once you're healed. Your identity has already been erased. Matteo's never finding 'Arianna Accardi' again."I looked at her swollen eyes and squeezed her hand. "Thank you, Yvette. Thank you..."She tucked the blanket around me like I might break. "You did the right thing. When someone screws you over, you don't stay—you fight. Staying with him would've wrecked

I sat frozen on the couch, heart shredded, eyes locked on our wedding photo until sunrise.Cried the whole damn night.Matteo never came back.Only thing on my phone? Lucia's latest Instagram post:[Baby says he misses Daddy.]Photo: Matteo kissing her stomach. After a sleepless night, I made up my mind. I was keeping the baby—and vanishing.I hit the hospital and handed in my resignation."You're leaving today?" The head of O&G paused, holding the forms."Stay one more day," he sighed. "Everyone wants to say goodbye."I gripped the pen so tight my knuckles popped. "Fine."The VIP ward reeked of disinfectant. Lucia was twirling in front of the mirror with a limited-edition crocodile bag.She spotted me and cranked up the volume. "Well, look who it is. Chief specialist herself—my sweet sister Arianna. Thought I wouldn't recognize you just 'cause of a mask?""Ultrasound." I grabbed the probe. "Lie down.""Some women," she said, petting her bump like it was a trophy, "can't

Lucia rested a hand on her stomach. "How do the results look? Is the baby okay?""Oh—right." She glanced around. "Your hospital said a top specialist would handle my delivery. Where is she?""This is her. Dr. Acca—"I cut in. "The exam forms need a family signature.""My husband's in a meeting." Lucia flicked her phone. "He'll call soon. If there's anything you need to tell him, you can—"Her phone rang. She put it on speaker, slow and deliberate.Matteo's low voice flowed out. "Lucia, how did the checkup go?"My nails dug into my palm. This was the same voice that had once coaxed me through fevers. Now it was hers."Everything's perfect," Lucia said. "But the doctor says I need to stay happy. For the baby."Matteo laughed softly. "Alright. My princess. I bought you that rose estate you like. Happy now?""So happy. Thank you, honey." She blew a kiss.I stumbled into the equipment cart. Metal trays clattered.Lucia lifted a brow. "Doctor? You okay?""I'm fine." I grabbed th
