Chapter 4

Author: Seren
The morning of the gala, I woke up to a knife-sharp pain.

Weeks of stress and a whole day without food—my stomach was tearing itself apart.

I was drenched in cold sweat. I dialed the family doctor.

It rang and rang. No one picked up.

I threw on a robe and dragged myself out of the room.

The sun hadn't even risen, and the estate was already buzzing.

Lorenzo stood at the top of the stairs, directing servants as they hauled Vella's things downstairs.

"Lorenzo—where's the doctor?" I leaned against the railing, my voice thin. "My stomach's killing me. I need a shot."

He turned, brow furrowed.

"Lily, Vella was too nervous to sleep last night. The doctor's giving her a therapy session right now—he can't leave."

"She's my private doctor. What gives you the right—"

I tried to summon some fire, but it came out weak.

"Lily, there's a clinic a mile down the road. If you really can't stand it, I'll have the butler drive you. Vella's performance came together at the last minute and I'm busy booking the convoy—I can't go with you. You understand, right?"

Then he turned back to his instructions.

I didn't have the energy to deal with a clinic. I went back to my room, lay down, and clenched my teeth through the pain until sleep took me.

Outside, footsteps and chatter swirled all day. No one came to check on me.

By the time the pain finally eased, my heart had gone completely cold.

The sun was high now, and the whole estate was in chaos.

Everyone was rushing around for Vella's performance—stylists and makeup artists flooding the halls, the kitchen prepping her special meals.

I stayed in my room, dragging my weak body through packing, invisible as a ghost.

I put on a black coat, packed my passport and a few clothes into a small suitcase.

Lorenzo was in the main hall, helping Vella pick out a necklace for the show.

I walked over and handed him a folded document.

"There are a few extra guests for tonight's banquet. I need your final signature on the list."

He didn't even glance at it. He just grabbed a pen and scrawled his name at the bottom.

"Handle it yourself. I've got to get Vella to the theater—we're running late."

"Okay."

I looked at the paper and let out a quiet breath.

He didn't know that underneath that list was the divorce agreement I'd prepared long ago.

Lorenzo and his entourage climbed into the convoy for the theater.

I picked up my suitcase and walked out of the estate alone, climbing into a taxi I'd booked ahead.

In the rearview mirror, I could see Vella laughing and chatting in the car behind me. I just sat in silence, heading in the opposite direction—toward the airport.

Just before boarding, my phone buzzed.

A message from Lorenzo.

"Lily, the families should be arriving soon. Welcome everyone at the estate while I'm gone. I'll be back after Vella's curtain call. Be good."

My eyes landed on those two words—Be good.

The irony was almost too much.

I didn't reply. I just sent him the photo of the divorce papers.

Then block. Power off. Pulled out the SIM card and dropped it into the airport trash.

As the plane broke through the clouds, I watched the city shrink beneath me and let out a long, slow breath.

Goodbye, Lorenzo.

Goodbye, Mom and Dad.

I'm not anyone's sister anymore. Not anyone's Donna.

I'm just Lily now—free, and brave enough to live my own life.

A year later. At one of Europe's premier art venues, Henry sponsored a grand solo exhibition for me.No Lorenzo. No selfish parents. My paintings hung at the very center of the hall—drawing crowds of European elites and art critics, all pausing in awe.An hour before the exhibition opened, my phone buzzed. A message from an unknown Italian number, no name attached:"Lily, I never imagined you'd become this brilliant. I hope you find happiness in all the days to come."I read it calmly, swiped it away, and hit delete. At the same moment, inside the Lorenzo estate manor.Lorenzo sat alone in what used to be their master bedroom. Darkness everywhere, only the glow of his phone lighting up his haggard face. This room had once belonged to them. Now, in the closet, hung one sweater Lily had forgotten to take.He buried his face in it, breathing in whatever trace of her still lingered. After Lily left, the Lorenzo family had fallen on hard times. Their disgrace at the networking gala had made

The day after Lorenzo and my parents left, Vella showed up at the gallery alone. She stared at me, eyes burning with jealousy."Lily. You think you've won?""Lorenzo turned me down, sure—and he's been hunting for you like a madman. But in his heart, you're still just my replacement.""If you really meant that much to him, why did he hand you that cheap old brooch? Why did he give my gown to me?"I looked at her twisted face and felt nothing but contempt."Then why are you here today?" I said, my voice flat. "Because you figured out that even after moving into the manor, even wearing my dress—you could never be the real Donna.""You—!"Vella shook with rage and raised her hand to strike me.But someone caught her wrist mid-swing.Lorenzo.He was holding a box. Inside sat the jade necklace he'd once given to Vella."Lily..." His voice was raw, worn thin. "I took the necklace back. The jade is yours now. Please—just come home with me?"I looked at the emerald glinting in its case. Not a s

The Paris morning air carried the scent of coffee. In Professor Carter's studio, I set up my easel for the first time in what felt like forever. No ledgers. No suffocating rules. My hand moved like it had broken free from chains—I'd never felt anything like this before. Pure freedom.Colors collided on the canvas, and all the life I'd suppressed for years erupted like a volcano. This was where I'd always belonged. In six months, with Professor Carter's guidance, my work had taken the European art world by storm. Galleries were clamoring for pieces by the mysterious rising star, Lily—her paintings now priceless.Until one afternoon, the studio doorbell rang.A man in a deep gray trench coat walked in, holding the hand of a boy about seven or eight. He bowed politely to Professor Carter, his voice warm:"Professor Carter, forgive the intrusion. My nephew has been begging for days to see The Caged Bird. I was hoping the artist might be in today."Professor Carter waved me over with a smil

Late that night, when Lorenzo led Vella back to the estate, the sight that greeted him made him suck in a sharp breath. The VIPs from every major family sat silently at the table, their faces dark as thunder."Lorenzo! We've been sitting here for three goddamn hours! Not even a cup of hot tea! Is this how your family treats its guests?!"Panic hit Lorenzo like a freight train. He whipped his head around—the hall was in shambles, and there was no sign of Lily anywhere."Where's Lily?! Where the hell is she?!"He grabbed a servant by the collar and roared. The poor man trembled, barely able to speak:"Th-the Donna... she left in the evening, alone, with a suitcase... she hasn't come back..."Lorenzo's heart plummeted. Something clicked. He sprinted toward the master bedroom like a madman. He threw open the door. The room was spotless. Every single trace of Lily had vanished. He stumbled to the bed and collapsed onto the floor. There, on the pillow—her wedding ring. Resting beside it, a d

The night before the gala, my parents were invited to the estate for dinner. The long table was laden with an extravagant spread of seafood.Lorenzo raised his glass, smiling at everyone."To Vella—may she dazzle the entire gala tomorrow. Cheers."All the glasses went up.I looked at the lobster and oysters on my plate and didn't move a muscle.I had a severe seafood allergy—since childhood, one bite and I'd break out in hives, my throat would tighten, breathing would get hard. For three years, not a single seafood dish had ever appeared on this table. And today, Lorenzo had personally curated a menu made entirely of Vella's favorites. He noticed me sitting still, frowned, and seemed to remember."Damn. I forgot Lily's allergic to seafood. I'll have the kitchen make something else."He started to get up, but my father stopped him."Don't worry about it, Lorenzo. Lily can take care of herself. She'll find something in the kitchen later—no need to trouble you."Lorenzo glanced at me, nod
