The shrill cry of the first Void Spawn echoed across the valley. It was unlike anything the dragons had ever heard. The sound carried no rage, no pain, and no emotion. It was a hollow call that seemed to drain the warmth from the air itself. The creature lunged again. Verath met it with a swing powerful enough to split a boulder. His blade struck the creature’s shoulder, sending it crashing into the rocky cliff behind them. Before he could press the attack, another Void Spawn descended from the fractured sky. Then another. The Dragon Guard reacted immediately. Golden dragons surged upward, intercepting the creatures before they could reach the villages below. Fire illuminated the darkened heavens as dragon breath collided with the advancing enemies. To everyone’s surprise, the flames did not destroy them. The Void Spawn recoiled, their crystal-veined bodies hissing as smoke rose from their skin, but they quickly recovered and continued their advance. “They can be wounded!”
