Silence consumed the clearing.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Beyond the fracture, enormous shadows drifted through the pale violet light. They were unmistakable now dragons.

But wrong.

Their shapes were twisted, their wings unnaturally long, their scales glimmering like shards of obsidian. Their eyes burned with the same pale violet glow as the creatures from the forest.

The Dragon Kings.

Dead dragons that should have remained legends.

Elara felt cold.

“That’s impossible,” Kael whispe

  • The Dragon King's Curse    Chapter 119

Verath flew west toward Ashenrealm, keeping low enough that Elara could see the damage spreading across the countryside. Smoke rose from the remains of a watchtower near the eastern road, and distant figures moved between abandoned farms as soldiers escorted villagers toward the safety of the capital. The first attack by the Void Spawn had left the kingdom shaken, and the threat beneath Briar Village had made their situation considerably worse.Elara held on to Verath's scales as the wind rushed past her. Her thoughts kept returning to Malrec's words.Ask Caelen what happened to your mother. She had spent years accepting that some parts of her past would remain unanswered. Her mother's absence had shaped much of her childhood, but she had never suspected that the woman might be connected to the ancient magic now threatening the world. Caelen had promised to explain, yet his reluctance suggested that the truth would not be easy to hear. When they reached the castle, Verath landed in th

Elara remained beside Verath, watching the darkness beneath the broken floor. The voice had called her by name, and the familiarity in its tone troubled her more than the threat itself. Whatever waited below seemed to know her, yet she could not remember ever hearing it speak.Caelen moved away from the opening and examined the markings around it. “We need to leave this chamber.”Verath did not lower his sword. “You have spent centuries down here, and now you're telling us to leave without explaining what is underneath us?”“I am telling you that the anchor is failing. If we stay here arguing, the Void Spawn will finish what they started.”“Those are two different problems,” Noxaris said. “You told us the creatures were attacking the anchor. Now something else is speaking from beneath it. How are they connected?”Caelen rubbed a hand across his face. “They aren't necessarily connected. The Void Spawn are trying to consume the barrier's magic. Whatever lies beneath this chamber was imp

The laugh echoed from beneath the staircase, and Noxaris went still.Elara had seen him face enemies without hesitation, endure terrible injuries, and confront the End without showing much fear. His reaction now unsettled her more than the darkness below them.“You know that voice,” Verath said, keeping his sword raised.Noxaris nodded slowly. “His name is Caelen. He was our guardian in the world before this one. He taught us to control our magic and helped the First Ones protect the barrier.”Elara searched her memories, but the name meant nothing to her. “Why did you say we buried him?”“Because we did. I watched his body being laid in the ground.”A figure appeared at the bottom of the staircase. He climbed carefully, using the wall for support. His clothes were old and torn, and his dark hair fell past his shoulders. Despite the exhaustion visible on his face, his silver-gray eyes were sharp. When he reached the last few steps, he looked at Noxaris and smiled.“You still take too

Noxaris stared toward the eastern forest, unable to tear his eyes away from the dark shapes disappearing between the trees. “They know exactly where they’re going.” Verath stepped closer. “You said there was something beneath Briar Village.” “I did.” “What?” Noxaris hesitated. Elara studied his face. Whatever he had remembered, it had shaken him more than the appearance of the Void Spawn had. “Noxaris,” she said, “what is beneath that village?” He looked at her. “A seal.” Verath’s expression hardened. “Another one?” “Not like the barrier in the sky.” Noxaris shook his head. “The First Ones created this one for an entirely different purpose.” “What was it sealing?” Noxaris looked toward the forest again. “Nothing.” Verath frowned. “That doesn’t make sense.” “It wasn’t designed to keep something inside.” Elara’s eyes narrowed. “It was designed to keep something out.” The three of them exchanged a look. A distant explosion shook the eastern horizon. Verath immediatel

The shrill cry of the first Void Spawn echoed across the valley. It was unlike anything the dragons had ever heard. The sound carried no rage, no pain, and no emotion. It was a hollow call that seemed to drain the warmth from the air itself. The creature lunged again. Verath met it with a swing powerful enough to split a boulder. His blade struck the creature’s shoulder, sending it crashing into the rocky cliff behind them. Before he could press the attack, another Void Spawn descended from the fractured sky. Then another. The Dragon Guard reacted immediately. Golden dragons surged upward, intercepting the creatures before they could reach the villages below. Fire illuminated the darkened heavens as dragon breath collided with the advancing enemies. To everyone’s surprise, the flames did not destroy them. The Void Spawn recoiled, their crystal-veined bodies hissing as smoke rose from their skin, but they quickly recovered and continued their advance. “They can be wounded!”

The celebration did not last long. Only moments after the strange conversation with the End, a deep rumble rolled across the heavens. It began as a faint vibration beneath their feet. Then the mountains answered. Ancient cliffs trembled, sending loose stones crashing into the valley below. Birds burst from the forest in frightened flocks, while the dragons lifted their heads toward the sky, sensing a disturbance far older than any storm. Aurelion’s golden eyes narrowed. “Something is wrong.” Another tremor followed. This one was stronger. The clouds split apart as dark fractures spread across the heavens like cracks through glass. Verath instinctively stepped in front of Elara. His sword ignited with golden dragon fire. The End looked upward. Its enormous black eye remained fixed on the spreading fractures. For the first time since it had appeared, it seemed genuinely unsettled. Verath noticed immediately. “Is this your doing?” “No.” The answer came without hesitat

The city smelled like smoke and fear. Elara followed Verath through the lower streets of Ashenrealm, her cloak pulled tight as ash drifted from the sky. The rebellion had struck fast, storefronts shattered, black banners torn, citizens whispering in doorways. Guards rushed past, armor clattering, t

Elara woke to heat. Not the gentle warmth of a hearth, but the kind that seeped into her bones, pressed against her skin, and whispered danger. Her eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the dim light. She lay in a large chamber carved from dark stone, heavy curtains drawn across tall windows, faint as

The chains were taken off, but Elara still didn't feel free. The throne room of Ashenrealm felt alive, breathing heat and exhaling smoke. Black stone columns rose like jagged teeth toward a ceiling lost in shadow. Rivers of molten light flowed through carved channels in the floor, casting flicker

  • The Dragon King's Curse    PROLOGUE:

The screams tore through the valley before the fire even touched it. Elara Nightvale stumbled over blackened roots, her cloak shredded, lungs burning as she carried the boy in her arms. His arm was gone from the elbow to the fingertips, a jagged crimson ruin. The village lay in ruin behind her, sm
